520 games are now rated either Verified or Playable for Steam Deck

Besides that there are also games on steam that are to expensive when it comes to hardwarerequirements to run at a playable performance at all on the steam deck.
To assume that just every pc game on steam could run on a handheld/mobiledevice is just unrealistic in my opinion.

Quoting: EikeI still fear even if they've got several thousands of games at launch, which no console ever had, the headings will still be not be "Look at this incredible launch!" but "Not all Steam games supported!"Which had to be expected i'd say. The games available on Steam are made for PC gaming in the first place. Games that come without gamepadsupport or that utilize complex menus with lots of text are clearly out of scope when it comes to the steamdeck. Also VR Games are not a thing either. And this limtations are not even a "linux thing".

As a Linuxuser i am OK with that. However most Windowsusers making this experience will stay away from linux, and i can clearly understand why.
The steam deck is one specific device which of course will be in good shape on Linux regarding the hardwarefunctionality. But that does not translate to all the gaming desktop / Notebooks and gaming hardware available.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI am not talking about graphics driver issues. Just get yourself a random Gaming Mouse, Keyboard or a Gamecontroller and try to get it working as it does on Windows. I bought myself a wired Nacon Controller. Since this device is listed as an official X-Box Series/One Controller i thought it would work out of the box given the fact that the XPad Kerneldriver has support for those controllers if they are connected over USB. At the end i had to install the Xone driver and had to configure the controller manualy because steam doesn't detect it as an X-Box Controller. I also had to force steaminput on several games and disable it for others because the controller was not working as aspected.Quoting: ripper81358The numbers of steamusers using "linux" will grow once the steam deck is released. But that doesn't mean that your unsupported desktop gaming hardware will soon be officially supported for linux or anything else in that regard. Developers that have decided to support the deck are only targeting this specific device not desktop linuxgaming in general. That will be a problem to some degree, but not necessarily a huge one. For instance, in the initial rush of native games around the whole Steam Machine thing, I have the definite impression that various distros kind of converged in their gaming-stuff support . . . in the general direction of whatever Ubuntu was doing, mostly, but they did a fair amount of "what it takes not to be that distro the games don't run on". Plus stuff like SDL2 matured and got better known. I expect the same will be true for this, although it will be to make sure Proton runs fine and it will be more towards Arch.
There could be some hardware problems, particularly due to troubles with NVidia drivers, because the Deck uses AMD. But it's not like the games were built solely for the Deck, they were built to run on PC hardware, which is the same hardware all the Linux gamers are using. So probably not huge hardware issues, just a few corner cases with driver problems.

Pretty much what i expected. A great launch for a new mobile gamingdevice.
I hope that the steam deck will be a success and helps PC gaming adoption in the mobile gaming field.
However the potential impact of the deck on linuxgaming in general will be limited in my opinion. Valve chose a linux based OS for this device for the same reason Google chose it as a base for Android and Chrome OS.
Sure you can modify the deck in many ways because it is not a locked down device. The general purpose of the deck is to use it as a handheld gamingdevice giving you access to games from the steamstore that are suitable for this kind of gamingexperience.

Collabora's work on a Wayland driver for Wine is coming along nicely

However there are still several problems regarding windowmanagement with Wayland and Freesync doesn't work. This might be fixed with KDE Plasma 5.24 once it is released.

Quoting: ComfyRiceHi i have been on KDE Plasma with an AMD GPU for several month now. I never had problems with gameperformance compared to X11/Xorg.Quoting: STiATUsing KDE, Wayland is not an option with NVidia yet anyway. Unless you want to move your mouse so that anything is done and rendered at all ... think this bug exists now since october. Is Wayland usable for games on AMD? I have a Nvidia system and wayland halves my framerate in games at best and makes them unplayable at worst.
Works great outside of games for me otherwise.

OpenRazer 3.2.0 brings more device support for Razer fans on Linux

With openrazer you can look for compatible razer devices, buy the device and you have a working solution. It might not be perfect but it is better than the support offered for other brands. I have one configuration frontend (polychromatic) with all my devices in place, and i can configure them according to my needs.

Quoting: Mountain ManRazer products are trash. I suppose it's nice that someone is going to the effort to try and support them in Linux, but why bother for such low quality peripherals when there are much better options that "just work" out of the box?Sorry but i don't know any gaming hardware vendor that has official linux support for their products. So razer hardware + openrazer is a good solution in my opinion. I could buy from other vendors but it is very hard to find information on which hardware is supported. Most devices won't work aside from the standard function.

The support of gamingperipherals is clearly something where linux as a desktop OS needs to improve. For someone switching over from Windows it is just not acceptable that changing the OS leaves most if not all the equipment you own nonfunctional.
However choosing one of the supported razer devices for linuxgaming is actually a good choise. Thanks to openrazer and the polychromatic frontend i have my gear running well on my system. While not all features of my devices are supported like they would be on Windows it is good enough for my needs.
I hope that openrazer will be mainlined into the linuxkernel one day. It might also be a good idea to develope only one GUI frontend for it. While i am generally for individual solutions i don't like the useless fragmentation happening in many areas of opensource developement.

Just bought the game. At first i could not get it installed. The game was complaining about a missing sh file. I had to force proton as a compatibilitytool manually to download the game. Also the introvideo is not playing. Other than that it seems to work pretty well.

The steamdeck is allready a great device for us linuxusers in my opinion, given the fact that all the improvements that we enjoy now where made to make the deck possible at all.
However Valve needs to bring the enduserexperience to a point where everything works out of the box. Most potential deck customers are comming from Windows. I don't think that the majority of those users want to fiddle around with Proton GE and special startupcommands.
The out of the box experience will be the crucial point here. But even a failed steamdeck will bring better gaming to linux on the desktop, so i am quiet happy with how things develop right now.

Even with this latest update the linuxversion is in such bad shape that i must sadly recommend running the Windowsversion via proton instead of the native linuxbuild.

I have tried the native linuxversion (beta) for a few days now. The game runs very well on my end. However at least on my system running an AMD Radeon RX 6700xt with the latest stable version of Mesa i encountered some technical bugs.
1. The screenresolution setting is not working showing just an empty box with nothing to select.
2. Resolutionscaling was set to 50% at the first launch so i had to adjust it to 100% manually to get the rendering up to the native resolution of my screen.
3. Vsync does not work, at least not for my 1080p@144Hz display. Activating Vsync instantly cuts my FPS down to 60 while at the same time gives me bad screentearing. I ended up using the framelimiter option instead.
Other than that the game runs flawless on X11 and Wayland with very high performance and no visible graphical glitches.
