AMD publishes the source code for FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2)

Quoting: ObsidianBlk
Quoting: scaineMy understanding of this is limited, but I think it has to be engineered into the game - FSR2 can't be "hacked" into a game externally the way we had with FSR1. But from the videos I've watched, it's pretty incredible. I couldn't really tell the difference between FSR1 and DLSS, but now you'd need a zoomed in side-by-side comparison to spot the difference.

Fingers crossed this is worked into existing games retroactively too, although that might be too much to hope for.
My understanding is that it works without the need for a game to support it. Additionally, it would work regardless of whether one is using an AMD or Nvidia GPU. This is kinda FSR's big selling point over DLSS. DLSS needs to be built into the games and is limited to Nvidia GPUs, where FSR is neither.
FSR2 needs to be implemented per game just like DLSS. RSR which is based on FSR1 can be used regardless of an implementation. However the downside of this is that the whole game is affected and this includes the Ui and the gamemenus as well. So things can become quiet tiny and text is hard to read in some games.

KDE Plasma 5.25 is out now, here's some of what's new
16 Jun 2022 at 1:02 pm UTC Likes: 1

I have used KDE (Plasma) since i installed my first linuxdistribution back in the early 2000 years. I used Redhat and moved to Suse Linux. Nowadays i am on the Kubuntu regular release for many years now. While i switched distributions i always used KDE as my desktop. The Plasmadesktop is great and the same is true for many Apps and Tools build with KDE technology (Kontact,KDEnlive,Dolphin,Okular,Latte Dock).

My brother on the other hand is a longtime GNOME user and i think that it is a great experience in it's own right if you are used to it's worklflow.

If you have a general idea how linuxdistributions work, switching desktops is much harder than switching distros because the DE is your interface to the OS. By time you learn to use it, configuring it to suit your needs and workaround it's flaws. This is also true for OSX and Windows.

The good thing is that linux as a desktop OS gives you much more options here to make it your own. It gives you complete ownership and control over your computingdevices and your files for no financial cost with trustworthy free and opensource software mostly developed by people in their free time.
I think we should keep this mind while complaining about missing features and problems with said software.

Linux as a desktop OS is now going through a rough time in my opinion. The necessary switch to new technologies like Wayland will take a long time and it will be (is) frustrating at certain points. On the other hand this development will in the end solve problems like multidisplaysetups, VRR and others which wont work with X.Org/X11. The adoption of Wayland was held back for a long time by many factors and is overdue.

After a long wait, Psychonauts 2 has an official Linux version now

Quoting: headless_cyborgSo, trying this on an RTX 3060 laptop. FPS limit set to "unlimited", yet I only had 55-60 fps with 35% GPU usage.
Then I disabled V-sync and it's now at 170 FPS. I have a 144Hz monitor so I guess V-sync got the wrong impression about how many FPS it should push out. Ultimately went from "meh port" to "ok, this runs good".
All native Linuxgames based on the Unrealengine seem to behave strange on high refreshrate displays. Splitgate and Hypercharge Unboxed are two other examples where V-Sync is cutting down the FPS to 60 instead of syncing to the actual refreshrate of my display which is running at 144Hz. In Hypercharged Unboxed using V-Sync also introduces screentearing. I went with the framelimiter in both games instead of using V-Sync.

Manage your Linux PC remotely as KDE Connect lands on iPhone and iPad

Quoting: ripper81358While i have used KDE Plasma for many years i am not happy with KDE Connect. It is a great tool but for some reason the connection to my androidphone fails as soon as the screen is locked.

I have to unlock the phone while my PC is running, otherwise my phone isn't detected by KDE Connect. I don't know if this caused by Android or my Kubuntu system, but this issue is rendering KDE Connect useless for me.
This looks like Android battery optimizations. In the Android settings you should have an option to disable any battery-related restrictions for KDE Connect. It looks like this [External Link] on my phablet under Applications → KDE Connect → Battery → No restrictions.
Battery optimization is turned off for KDE Connect on my phone. But thank you for your advice.

Yes, the Steam Deck will eventually get Ray Tracing, once the AMD GPU driver matures
15 Apr 2022 at 5:19 pm UTC

I wonder if this would work at all with the APU built into the steam deck. Yes it has hardware raytracing support because it is based on AMD's RDNA 2 technology. However looking at the RDNA 2 benchmarks on windows it is clear how poor even AMD's dedicated RX 6000 series GPU's perform with raytracing enabled. There are some decent results if a game is using raytracing only for shadows and ambient occlusion. But with games utilizing raytracing for reflections wich will result in the most noticeable difference when compared to traditonal rendering, the performance is weak. Everything lower than an RX 6800 seems to be unusable even for 1080p in most cases. Another problem is that most games are optmized for Nvidia RTX GPU'S and even then DLSS is needed to compensate the performancehit introduced by raytracing.

Manic couch co-op game D-Corp gets a large content update

Quoting: furaxhornyxI had downloaded the demo a while ago, but with the pandemic, I didn't have the chance to test it with friends...
Guess I'll try to give it a go again
The game is great in couch coop. You can also try it with steam remoteplay if you have a reliable internetconnection.
Sadly the game has no support for online multiplayer yet.

How Valve Can Make the Deck Verified Program Better

Quoting: d10sfanVery interesting article, and I appreciate all the ports and work you have done in the past!

Not sure how it applies to your catalog of games, but many native games work better in proton, so in that case it would make sense to pick it over native on a case by case basis, since we are trying to go for the best user experience possible, at least in my opinion. The games that you've ported I've tried in the past have worked great though.

I know there's been a few times where ports have been delayed in terms of the Windows version being updated first, which can be an issue, but not sure how that is taken into account for certification. For example, Superliminial added their multiplayer Dec 17th, and it wasn't until Feb 21 that it was out on Linux(according to the developer's articles). Streets of Rage 4 took some time to get the Linux version on the store as well.

I'm not sure how those type of delays are taken into account with the certification. We've seen alot of ports being abandoned such as with Aspyr, Feral, and Virtual Programming.

What regularly broken games are you referring to, where many reviewers were seeing broken results from verified games? I haven't seen anything like that mentioned, but I haven't been following specific games too much, so was curious.

It does sound like in general that Valve has alot of areas to improve on with their cert process, especially in communicating it with the developers. I hope that they pick the native version where it's the best, as I still try to buy native games over proton where possible.
GNU+Linux native games don't use or require Proton, it's purely to make Windows games run on GNU+Linux. I have no idea what gives you the impression Proton is required for non-Windows games.
While i strongly prefer native games i just had a case today where i bought a game with native linuxsupport and switched to proton.

After installing the title i found out that my controller wasn't detected by the game. I tried all the different steaminput settings. Then i went to the community forum where i found reports on not working controllersupport regarding the linuxversion from years ago. Finally i forced Proton on the game and my controller worked without any further configuration needed.

Sadly native ports are clearly often of lesser quality than the windowsbuild. I have many native games in my steamlibrary where using Proton results in better performance and compatibility.

Valve clarifies how they test Native Linux or Proton for Steam Deck

Quoting: JpxsonI feel bad for Feral, I'm guessing Proton will be selected for all their games.
Particular reason why?
The assumption is that the older ports that still remain use older opengl and wrapping technology that is less efficient than modern Wine/Proton with DXVK.
The Main reason for using Proton instead of a native Feral Port would be the lack of crossplattform multiplayer support. Valve will most likely make sure that you can join multiplayer games running on Windows.

I'don't know what has changed but the Introcutscenes in some of my games (Orcs must die 3) which startet to work some time ago are not rendered anymore with the new protonrelease.I just get that testscreen image again.
