Steam Survey (finally showing up in Linux). (sends your username)
slaapliedje Jun 11, 2021
So this is the second time in the past few weeks that that I've gotten the Steam Survey. Last time I think was when I booted into my Debian drive, and this time in the Arch Linux drive. I usually scroll a bit to make sure everything shows up correctly, and in Arch it looked weird, so I started scrolling more...

Noticed that while most of it is just hardware information. There are paths in there. So if you don't want Valve to know your user name on your local station (yeah I know, I'm extra paranoid) then you'll want to NOT send in your hardware survey! It shows things like LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and permissions of all the files within 'pinned_libs_64', etc.

With a disproportionately large demographic of users who understand data collection, results from efforts by things like the steam hardware survey for Linux probably see some poisoned results. I have wondered how the browser/OS marketshare stats might look if, for example, Firefox and derivatives did not often advertise bogus headers in order to preserve privacy.
