The Steam Deck really doesn't need exclusives

Quoting: ShabbyXYour argument might only hold for a studio that is really tiny, but then their games aren't heavy enough to warrant a need for such optimizations.

The benefit for a small team is a fair argument in itself - depending on their ambition level. But we need not talk about theoretical scenarios here - I will allow myself another attempt to lead attention to the actual real world:

Exclusive titles on Playstation are typically *not* small games by tiny developers - it's quite the contrary - highly ranked and praised AAA games with a massive team behind it.

And if we do consider these real life examples and compare them to multiplat titles, from a pure TECHNICAL point of view they usually stand out and shine and often even quite radically so.

Unless you disagree with this observation I can not fathom how you would argue against this benefit during the design and implementation phase of those games. It's not ONLY because they are damn good developers, it's also because they can FOCUS on one stack and make the most out of that.

Quoting: ShabbyXYour conclusion is not correct however. None of the optimizations I or anybody else made required the game to be exclusive.

Hey, cool to hear from you!
It doesn't REQUIRE it to be, no. I am merely stating the benefit of focusing on one hardware stack, and maximise the utilisation of the chipsets and capacities therein with no consideration of other hardware configurations. And that, in effect, typically implies platform exclusivity. Or ports (a whole other chapter to discuss).

Or do you disagree with that the titles developed for one specific hardware (typically console) as a general observation outperforms the multiplats?

Quoting: Liam DaweI don't think the argument has much merit of locking to a single platform for any kind of performance benefit that you suggest. Optimization doesn't mean it needs to be exclusive. Optimization at the lower end can benefit the higher end too, and generally it does.

We do not need to think, assume, suppose or guess anything: The proof is in the pudding.
Just fire up a Playstation exclusive (of any generation really - I only have experience in PS, but I would assume it's the same on Nintendo too, maybe even Xbox), play it, then compare that to a PC game, and do a side-by-side comparison of the hardware VS experience.

I dare say one is of a very prejudice mind if the difference does not appear as striking. The amount of performance the console exclusive is able to squeeze out of the measly 300 euro console is *ridiculous* compared with the PC that in sheer hardware spec (and five times the price!) should run in circles around the console.

While that same blinding difference is *not* as apparent on multiplat games built both for PC and consoles.

I am sure exceptions exist, but if we paint with a broad brush. As a general rule, generally speaking.

I mean, of all arguments AGAINST platform exclusiveness - of whom there are many and legit - I would say this is the ONE major argument for having a game designed specifically for one hardware stack. And I honestly think it's totally fair game to admit so, while still being against exclusivity. Because the arguments against may still outweigh this advantage.

Quotetheir article touches on an important bit: games taking better advantage of the Steam Deck uniqueness directly
I'm not an evangelist for exclusives but This is a MASSIVE argument for, though. Not only in regards to screen Resolution and gamepad support, but even more importantly the chipsets and processing power.

When software is tailor made for one specific hardware, it enables the developers to write a lot more effective code. This is why the consoles can perform as good as they do. Just look at the PlayStation and the incredibly smooth and visually stunning experiences they can deliver there year after year on hardware that's nothing compared to a modern pc. The difference is staggering and a very strong demonstration of how exclusive code CAN perform.
And who doesn't want the most out of the hardware they have purchased?

Again, it's easy to argue against exclusivity, but there's also weighty arguments FOR.

The fix for GNOME 3 as a Wayland compositor, I hope that one fixes a weird issue I've had with games lately - even games that has used to work earlier (on the same driver!).

Deck is not locked behind Steam. Companies can port their laungers and games to Linux and keep all the money without giving 30% cut to Steam, if they wish to.

... But he doesn't claim so? He say most wouldn't bother to do so. And I don't think they will, either.

This is one of the best shooter series I've ever played. Seriously. Everyone praise the first but I think the next two are better, and really quite fantastic. Amazing visuals and the gameplay with that suit is just total awesomeness.

KDE are raising funds for the Kdenlive video editor

Tehchnically this is a really good editor with a decent toolset and fairly stable - I'd dare claim the overall best on Linux. There's just one massive issue with the render from it - it's not well synced audio/video. It starts out synced but then slowly gets desynced with time. It's really weird, such a basic thing as this.
But that's ruined many a video clip for me.

Quoting: jenscrafting is kind of useless since you’ll always find something better shortly afterwards
Crafting is a thing for the latter half of the game, to upgrade existing gear and craft stuff that can't be looted (or you need more of, like clothing and weapon mods). I do agree with you however that for the first half of the game there's no point in crafting or purchasing any equipment - you'll loot better stuff around the corner.
