First purchase on itch.io after holding back for a long time. Bought it for Towerfall Ascension, it doesn't work on Linux for me not a great start. Haque won't start which was another one I was interested in (and im sure there are more) as it appears to be a 32bit build and im running 64bit (is it safe to install an older 32bit version of libcrypto.so.1.0.0 on my 64bit system ?)
there appears to be some titles are not working and of course there are only 260'ish games that are 'supported' on Linux. Im not saying it's not worth donating though, just something to be aware of.

Quoting: Zlopezthat's pretty much what i said. and i agree.Quoting: LoftyNo product is ever in perfect state, it's always just decision if it's good enough to be released.Quoting: GuestMaybe a two month delay wasn't long enough?Realistically no delay would have been long enough. This (like pretty much all consumer electronic products today) are a WIP and the consumer is the Alpha/Beta tester to some extent. It's just the way things are, the question is did they ship it in a good enough condition to be considered stable, workable and a good enough consumer experience out of the gate and from what i am seeing that is a yes, perhaps a too narrow of a yes for some but this is still early days.

Quoting: SamsaiBut when those cool things are being made by volunteer forces and then someone comes complaining why an easy way doesn't already exist, as if the volunteer developers are somehow being stupid or lazy, then that rubs me the wrong way.I think you kind of made my point for me.

I mean i take your point it's not technically inaccurate, learning tech is fun for some but remarkably it's not for others who just want to get the latest cool Linux stuff super easy. When people new or unfamiliar with Linux wonder why things aren't as easy as on Windows, often the developer (assuming that's what you do by your response) becomes automatically defensive assuming the user is just being entitled (in some cases yes) but i imagine at least on here.. 9 times out of 10 i don't think that's the case they just want to have access to the cool stuff without "learning to package"

Quoting: SamsaiYou could contribute a Flatpak or a Snap for it.that (phoronix level retort) is akin to "learn to code". I had thought one of the key itineraries of this site was to promote Linux gaming and to wider audience that might not be technically savvy nor have the inclination to do so because, err i dunno know they might just be a plumber who wants to easily game on Linux and got tired of Windows.

Quoting: KimmoKMWhats the point of ever increasing hardware performance if devs just throw out millions of TFLOPS with poorly optimized games. Im hoping that the steam deck spawns even more PC handhelds and is of course a massive success so at least some developers can target the 1.8TFLOPS of the Steam Deck and not the 10TFLOPS of the highest end consoles.Quoting: JahimselfAre the performance any good? If yes what hardware do you have? There are thousands of posts on the forum of person with High End computer running very poorly. Before refunding the game at 1h played because it didn't seem like I would end up liking it, I didn't have performance issues despite having below recommended minimum spec setup (RX580, which was listed as the minimum requirement, and CPU below the listed minimum). With medium settings (sans motion blur and other silliness) rendered at 1080p (upscaled to 1440p using FXR) I was getting 60fps indoors, 30-40fps once I entered the open world, no framerate-instability. I've also seen videos of Chinese journalists with review copies running the game smoothly on Steam Deck, which has an even lower spec (although I guess that was 720p and minimum settings).
For a game that doesn't look very impressive in terms of tech that's not very good performance, but unless the later areas are more demanding or something, that almost sounds like above-Windows performance, it certainly can't be much worse, because I keep hearing a lot of complaints (indeed, that's the prime reason for its mixed Steam rating, along with other technical deficiencies like capped framerates, lack of widescreen support, etc).

Quoting: slaapliedjeValve & the community need to put emphasis on how tailored Steam OS 3.0 is for the Steam Deck so people don't think it is just a binary choice of one OS over the other.Quoting: Alm888No SteamOS vs. Windows benchmarks. What a pity. :(Most people I bet will not bother installing Windows on it. Only tech nerds will care. Your typical console player certainly won't.
I kinda want to know how this "SteamOS" fares against an established gaming OS with games made first and foremost for said OS.
But as Liam pointed out, drivers aren't ready yet. This is custom stuff made by Valve/AMD from what I understand of it. So while it's a x86_64 setup, it has custom GPU, not to mention all the custom control inputs.

Amazing Review Liam, thanks for all the coverage you have given on this device. This review kind of proves that the written format is not totally dead yet.

Not to mention the custom server list glitches and you lose the mouse cursor and you have to tab, alt-tab, shift-tab a few times to try get it back so you can choose a server....
CS:GO on Linux is just a mess. At least you don't have to still put in a custom launch command to disable joystick in order for it to launch now. But it crashes quiet frequently on my system using OpenGL. The Vulkan option makes it run smooth but the shaders take so long to cache and load in you can lose the first few rounds with stutter.
would be nice if it could load on Proton but ironically Valve games can't seem to do this to well.

Quoting: BogomipsThey can't even get rid of text issues in CS:GO :) (The demoui control panel is unusable).worse for me is that the support for custom servers is bad. None of the servers i try to connect to will load maps as there is some weird naming format that doesn't seem to jive well with Linux on custom maps, it might even just be a case sensitive thing but it stop's me joining prop hunt / jail or zombie maps for years now, i have to play CS:source for that

That said, perhaps the steam deck will have even better haptic pads and be a better fit for using gyro due to it's size and shape.

Quoting: StarbellyNot for me, as an owner of both a mouse and steam controller's using gyro aim for hundreds of hours. Close, but its not better than a mouse for me at least.Quoting: Loftyid definitely like to play TF2 on the steam deck. Heck id even play CS:GO on the steam deck even though i might not 'win' the match id have a lot of fun trying to :smile:Do not underestimate the speed and accuracy of gyro aiming. It's better than mouse.
