My thoughts on the MMO Albion Online on Linux, many months later

QuoteAlbion Online is a PvP and crafting focused MMO, so everything on the markets and all the gear you get is crafted by either you or someone else.

So what system do they have in place so a new player will be able to actually sell their goods in a market that's bound to be flooded with other low-level crafted material? That was an issue in Wakfu, when I tried playing that.

Try Hard Parking, an infuriating top-down parking game that actually looks hilarious

I downloaded this from Itch a couple of weeks ago but haven't played it yet, and when I look now the page seems to have vanished. Seems like I got lucky and grabbed it just in time.

Raft, a rather brilliant prototype game about being stuck in the middle of the ocean

How much stuff can there really be to do on a bleedin' raft in the middle of the ocean?

The dev has a small questionnaire on the site asking what people would like to see most. Small islands is one thing, multiplayer is another. If both were added I could see some nice potential for the game.

Snorkelling and spear fishing would be pretty cool as well. I'm not a multiplayer person, but I'm definitely not against it as an option.

Personally, I really dig the restricted environment. You've got a raft and its immediate surroundings and a whole lot of flotsam to improve your raft with, and that's really it. Finding things to do within those limitations calls for creativity on the developer's part and if they step up to the plate you can really end up with a gem. I'm eager to see where this is headed.

The awesome itch store is also having a big sale, with some real indie gems going cheap

I bought MewnBase, and it's quite well put together. The dev seems pretty committed to working on making it a great game, and has a pretty firm foundation in place.

My best MMO game experience has been on (Open)PVP-Servers so far. I like games esp. MMOs where players have the freedom to form the world as they like. My only fear is that it will end in a disaster with the current gamer generation. There are way to many idiots around nowadays which have nothing better to do then spoil the fun for all others.

Not "nowadays" by any means, given PKing (player killing) was considered a problem back on Ultima Online back in 1997.

QuoteEDIT: Found this on the Official Website: The game world is divided into several zones: in peaceful lands players are unable to attack each other and destroy buildings that don’t belong to them...

Yes, which is why I mentioned that in the comment you partially quoted.

It seems unclear what the situation is, because in one place they say you're vulnerable to PvP everywhere, in another they talk about PvP and non-PvP zones, and in yet a third they mention separate servers for PvP and PvE. All of which are official statements by the devs, so which is it?

I was initially turned off by the "open PvP" idea, suggesting that you could be attacked at any time no matter what. But then I saw they have a page (but no downloads) on Itch.io, which includes the following:

QuoteThere are servers for hardcore survival with full loot drop on death, building destructions, and PvP, as well as quiet servers for those who prefer calm atmosphere and non-PvP content of the game

If that's actually the case, then I'd like it better. I don't know if it is though, since the official page doesn't have that text and they talk about PvP and non-PvP zones instead.

Quoting: wvstolzingGood thing I'm a pauper! So I don't have to worry about sales or such.
Haha.
ha.
Yeah it's great.
Not having money, it's so cool.
haha.

I'm a pauper too, so sales like this are one of the rare times I get to splurge and actually get games I want.

Civ VI Steam forum mods banning users for expressing Linux support

Quoting: SeeKIf this were a situation in which we could harmlessly ignore these people, that would be great. The problem is that these trolls are infiltrating the system and sabotaging our very ability to communicate respectfully with developers and amongst ourselves where they operate.

Remember, Microsoft pays people to crash Linux conventions for a reason.

"Don't feed the trolls" has NEVER worked, even back on USENET.

It's even less effective when what the "trolls" want is your silence.

Being a mod is a pretty thankless job, and even if you do everything right you're still going to catch crap from people, accusations of being power-hungry and abusive, etc. Especially on larger forums where there's more moderation to do.

What I'm seeing here seems to be a case of mods taking somewhat too hard a line in the face of a lot of volume. Like Liam, I can see people just posting "+1" as inadvertently spamming, not worth a ban unless they push it but certainly worth removing those messages. A dozen people posting just that (and quoting each other) does make a forum hard to read, and a mod's job is to keep the forum easy to read. Same for people appending +1 to the end of their statements in solidarity and protest, that's easy to see as a pointed attack on the moderators rather than just support for a port. Similarly, diverging into discussion about the moderation itself is basically derailing, and I can see off-topic stuff that's not directly about porting being removed. That stuff belongs in its own thread, not clogging up the works.

Getting caught up in stuff like that and having an adversarial relationship with the mods is what the trolls want most. It benefits them, having the pro-Linux people on the mods' bad side. Continuing to needle them is a bad approach.

That said, it does seem like the mods went overboard, which is pretty easy to do. And yes, they're not as strict on the anti-Linux trolls as they should be. It's questionable whether they're selectively deleting as part of an anti-Linux conspiracy, and trying to disrupt the idea of consensus though, that seems to be a bit of a stretch. What's been presented here isn't nearly enough to support that theory.
