Project Eternity may get a Linux version!
21 Sep 2012 at 11:22 am UTC

Oh, I didn't spot that we had a news article on this one.

I made a few lengthy posts in the Linux thread on the Steam forums about why this trend of unrealistic stretch goals and stretch goals in general for cross platform support are likely to breed unhealthy perceptions and behaviours. If anybody's interested they can read them.

One thing I would like to highlight (as an example of unhealthy behaviour) is that there's a thread on the Project Eternity forums made by people who feel that Linux support is a waste of the the project's funds - an attitude that would be much less likely to have existed if Linux support were added to the project directly rather than associated with a stretch goal.

At the end of the day, I think there's more benefit to either adding Linux support to the primary target, or just adding Linux support to the project after the minimum value that the developers feel they need to be able to support Linux is met (and not confirm it beforehand). This way, people on all platforms are aiming for the same things with regards to stretch goals, which creates better community synergy, and promotes equality.

Steam Beta may arrive next month!

Quoting: "Anon, post: 5437"Actually, it was made up by people who where claiming Steam is a bad thing or non-Ubuntu news sites. OMGUbuntu, Ubuntu Vibes, WebUpd8 all said it will be only available officially on Ubuntu. They never said "Only on Ubuntu!", just "Only supported officially on Ubuntu."

Even this is inaccurate since the blog clearly states that other distros will be officially supported.

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 5434, member: 93"only once it available outside ubuntu though, but prob won't be long
There is nothing to indicate that you won't be able to run the first publicly available version of the Steam client on other distros. In fact, the first Valve blog post highlights that they were only using Ubuntu exclusively during development, implying that at launch there will be other distros supported (even if it were the only officially supported distro, I find it hard to imagine that they'd be able to do anything to actively prevent it being run on others).

The whole "Coming to Ubuntu only!!!" thing is just stuff that's been made up by a bunch of Ubuntu specific news sites ^_^

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 5408, member: 93"A bit down the posts they mention linux was about 15% of the sales, if that remained the same then its still 1500 units a month.... not bad I would think :)

It's interesting that this almost directly reflects the revenue per platform [External Link] for the Humble Indie Bundles (only those with "indie" in the title), for which Linux payments currently account for 14.95% (it's a little over 16% for all bundles combined). Yet more evidence that the Humble Bundle seem to be a good indicator for Linux purchasing behaviour.

Misquote! There was no full stop there :O

Seriously though, this is likely to be a pretty big hurdle for us (F/OSS communities) to overcome within the next few years. Most of the rest of the world has been trained to be dismissive of messages that come out of the Free Software movement to the extent that rationally irrefutable arguments are ignored without justification.

I suspect Apple would need to aggressively adopt the term (as opposed to happily using it as a distinguishing point) for it to really start to disappear. Linux is a little too far away from mainstream and seen to be populated by ineffectual neckbeards for the broader industry to pay attention to semantic arguments like this coming from us.

Interesting. Personally, I'm still pretty interested in the mission based story though.

Steam Linux Beta Is Getting Closer!

Quoting: "Hamish, post: 5361, member: 6"Not a reflection on the game, but the quality of the ports. None of them were ever properly finished.

Fair enough. I don't think I've played any of them natively, though I have heard that the SS2 port wasn't properly launched/completed/whatever.
