Linux hardware vendor System76 introduces the Thelio Mira desktop
11 March 2021 at 9:27 pm UTC

Quoting: KithopAny other system builder targeting Windows, sure, nVidia is more popular. But for a Linux-first integrator pushing for openness, it's just odd to me to not even offer the equivalent hardware that doesn't require a binary blob. I'm not even saying not to sell or even default to nVidia if that's what they want, but I suppose there might be a way to sweet talk them into letting you order a GPU-less system and then BYO card.

I tried to talk them into shipping one without the GPU and they said they do not do that.

Going to try and sell the base GPU on Ebay to make a few dollars back.

Replaced my Thelio order with this. Bigger case and open hardware certification is worth the extra $.

AMD hardware is great but their drivers are below average. I wish they could fix their drivers so I could finally move away from NVidia.

Plasma 5.21 rolls out as one of the best looking Linux desktops available

Quoting: scaineI might have to give this another shot. Two things put me off last time:

1. The shoe-horning of the letter K into just about everything. On the few occasions Gnome devs do the same with G (e.g. gThumb), it annoys me there too. But in KDE, it's like a game of "every app is a bad pun". Thank goodness for Dolphin. Maybe others will help buck the trend.

2. Dolphin and Kate can't be run as sudo. I get the reasons why they did this, but absolutely screw any DE or app which takes the law into its own hands.

In the grand scheme of things, neither are show stoppers, but there were enough other paper cuts 18 months ago to put me off overall (one of which was that I used an Nvidia GPU). So yeah, ding ding, round 2, hopefully.

But I'll probably try Budgie too which might be a better fit for me.

I don't think they name new applications with a K anymore. The ones that I do have installed on my system I am okay with like Konsole and kRunner.

QuoteExecuting Dolphin with sudo is not possible due to unfixable security vulnerabilities.
Good enough reason for me

Total War: WARHAMMER III announced and confirmed for Linux by Feral Interactive

Really liked the changes from Three Kingdoms and I don't know if I can go back to what was in Warhammer II. I will probably wait a year anyways to get this after release because their track record with the first year is pretty poor in my experience.

Ludusavi seems like a pretty good open source game save backup tool

Awesome find!

The name is going to be really hard to remember though.

Quoting: fagnerlnThis twilight theme is really beautiful! KDE breaks a bit too much IMO, but I'm for sure will try this with Wayland

Way too many times after updating packages my KDE will break in all sorts of fun ways. I've had this issue for years with every KDE distro and is a bad user experience.

Maybe you're using the wrong Distro(s) or have some wonky hardware? I've used KDE Neon since it came out (Testing Es. currently). In all these years now, the only breakage I've ever had was back when Discover was hella-buggy. Thecritical bugs are fixed now, and Discover is quite amazing!

I love the fact that, although I could use the command line for updates, Discover actually connects to the KDE Store - so it not only updates normal packages, it also updates the Snaps, Flatpaks, and theme and icon sets. Even wallpapers. It's truly a value add and just one example of why KDE is just amazing.

It is not the distro as I've used multiple distros with KDE and I've experienced the same issue on all distros.

The only common hardware that I have are NVidia cards on all of my hardware. Perhaps the NVidia proprietary driver is causing these issues I've been having after updates.
