Oh I see it was a public vote, lame.
Perish the thought that anything should be decided based on what most people think.
What if most people are wrong and the Playdate is the better device?
Actually, what is the "best" X is a classic case of something that can really only be determined by democratic vote. If you want to determine the boiling point of lead, you don't want to do a poll on it, you want to check a reference book or ask a chemist (who will check a reference book).

But if the question is what is the "best" something, there literally is no way "most people" can be wrong. It's a subjective question; there are no agreed objective criteria. Experts cannot determine this. Arguably nothing can, and certainly individuals are free to continue thinking item number 3 is the best even if the majority thinks number 5 is. But a majority vote is definitely the closest you can come to a determination of something like that; certainly "a few experts" would have far less validity.
Sure but popular vote doesn’t account for bias. The people voting on this don’t all own Steam Decks and Playdates. This is a poll of best device from a game website that’s been pimping Steam Deck. It’s not a national or international or galactic poll where people had to vote on these things objectively after a predefined period of information.

Congrats, but what were the qualifications?

What were the other candidates?

A Playdate?

The Steam Deck has some nice hardware but is in no way a bleeding edge device. Heck it has a semi-weak screen just to keep costs down.

EDIT:
Oh I see it was a public vote, lame.

And for those curious here’s what it was up against (it beat out a PS5 harddrive lol):

Best Gaming Hardware

Playdate
Steam Deck (WINNER)
Analogue Pocket
Backbone One: PlayStation Edition
Roccat Kone XP
WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5

Quoting: itscalledrealityReally, third party clients are more in the spirit of GOG than an official client would be.
Would be? Well, they already have an official client, it's called Galaxy... not supporting Linux of course.

And while I'm ok with third party clients for GOG, I'm still missing the dedication and commitment for Linux that Valve shows with Steam OS and Proton. GOG doesn't even try. And to say that third party clients fit GOG better sounds like making a shabby excuse for them to do nothing. According to their community wishlist, there are a lot of people complaining about the lack of an official Linux client.
Yeah like I said there is no official Linux client. The third party clients however do have proton support built in so it really doesn’t matter if GoG puts forth effort because other people already are.

If you don’t like GoG inability to support Linux, then why do toy want them to support an official client?

People who are complaining that GOG in house branded client doesn’t exist for Linux are wasting their breath.

Quoting: LinuxerWould even buy games from GOG but as long as there's no official Linux client, guess what GOG? All da monis go to Steam and Valve.
But honestly Lutris and/or other third party clients (Heroic Launcher, ProtonUp-Qt) are enough. The FOSS community is doing most of the work with WINE and third party clients, Valve is just aping the ability to combine it into a stable platform.

Really, third party clients are more in the spirit of GOG than an official client would be.

I have been buying from GoG for DRM free games which has allowed me to skip these sales. I still get the itch sometimes but glad my wallet and always growing backlog are safe. I’ll probably use this opportunity to guilt friends into purchasing some coop/vs games I already own though.

Quoting: GuestLol if you feel "empowered" from boycotting a company that really doesn't care - i got some bad news for you. That's like saying you don't like the hot girl in your class that you used to like, who in reality doesn't care whether you live or die. It sounds like a massive cope and makes you look bad, not her.
You're still missing the point. I'm not feeling empowered about boycotting EA, I'm feeling empowered that I don't get trapped into worrying about launchers on my machine because I purchase things mostly from companies not trying to mine every ounce of data from my machine and activities.

EA provides me no value so I don't utilize them. So this "hot girl" never stimulated me there for I have no hasty feelings against them? I'm not even sure of the point of this metaphor.

As for games that were acquired after you purchased them, then don't install and play them if the launcher bugs you, like I said plenty of equally good games not made by EA event ones that are similar to their biggest hits.

Their reputation will hurt them all around, not just on linux - so "voting with your wallet" doesn't do shit for helping linux gaming. In fact it makes our community look like children throwing a tantrum.
No it doesn't and it's not a tactic exclusive to Linux or gamers or Linux gaming.

How long have you worked for EA?

Quoting: TermyThe only way to get rid of such bullshit is to vote with your wallet. So boycotting EA is the only right thing to do ^^
lol i can't believe people actually think this to this day. voting with your wallet does nothing - its just a less than a drop in the ocean for them, they won't notice and they won't care.
And yet, boycotts sometimes work. Admittedly, usually when they're well organized and relate to a major, clear-cut issue of current relevance.

But computer games are a good place for relatively low-level, disorganized boycotts to make some difference. There isn't really a need for any particular company's games (contrast with, say, MS Office). You can never play all the computer games out there. So skipping ones put out by companies whose policies annoy you either ethically or in terms of stuff they do that messes with the user experience is essentially cost free for the consumer, who has plenty of other games to buy. Arguably even less than zero cost, because the benefit of (smugness/feeling good about yourself) is probably greater than the near-zero cost of playing different games instead.

But it's not cost free for the corporation. If 2% of potential buyers refrain from buying because of a corporation's practices, that's a loss the size of, say, the Linux platform . . . which seems to be not big enough for an AAA company to actually target, but quite big enough for an AAA company to make the smaller effort of tweaking for Proton or Steam Deck compatibility, so enough to be worth a small behaviour modification. If a corp is scuzzy enough to lose 5% of sales to its reputation, that starts being a significant crimp in profitability.
As with any form of protest/boycott it needs quite a great deal of organization. Unless a concerted effort is organized and occurs, a consumer not buying something for "ethical reasons" won't have any impact on the bottom line of the organization particularly if its not organized in any meaningful way. Indeed, with computer games, unless it is something egregious most people will continue buying EA games even if they are linux gamers in one form or another. In addition, EA is too large that most linux gamers will end up acquiring an EA game. In short, "voting with your wallet" is stupid and doesn't work and just sounds ridiculous when said.
Wow, what? I haven’t bought an EA game for over 10+ years. It wasn’t hard, there are plenty of other great games.

To every consumerist here claiming that voting with your wallet doesn’t work. It’s not about squashing a company it’s about making better decisions for yourself and not purchasing things because of media attention and marketing campaigns; It is about empowering yourself and others.

Of course if you’re fine with swallowing whatever marketing is jammed into your brain than good for you I guess. Enjoy your endless complaining.

Godot Engine 4.0 gets a Movie Maker
16 Nov 2022 at 4:11 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestThe github page shows over 5k open issues. I love this engine and everything that is going on with it, but I hope at some point they really focus on polishing bugs and issues before adding more features. The idea of a movie maker is really cool, but aren't there already tools for creating game trailers etc? I don't know why this would be at the top of the list.

One no brainer is to allow importing of resources, specifically sound files during run time. One use case example would be a music or beat game or in game custom music folder to load and play music at run time. Or a custom level editor where you can pick the music per level or import custom music. The point is, this has been an issue for a long time and a few google searches will show multiple open/closed issues and forum postings on it.

This is just an example of many requests that in my opinion make a lot of sense. A movie maker was honestly something that I would never have guessed if someone asked me to write a top 10 list of features needed.
I don’t understand why this wouldn’t be possible. It looks like Godot has a File API:

https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/classes/class_file.html [External Link]

The next step is passing the data to something that will process it which would be built into your game.
