Square Enix invests in Playtron for their Linux-based PlaytronOS - first Alpha out now

I half-expect Timmy and EGS to suddenly announce EAC support for this particular flavor of Linux, but specifically NOT SteamOS.

Risk of Rain creators Hopoo Games join Valve
5 Sep 2024 at 6:03 am UTC

I set the game to update on launch, and haven't launched it while I await the new update to fix the physics-tied-to-framerate idiocy they introduced (apparently merging codebase from consoles to PC, good job guys).
Good on Hopoo devs joining Valve though.

TheForceEngine adds initial Dark Forces Remaster support

Quoting: dziadulewiczFor easy (read:sane) installation there are Flatpak and Snap packages now:

https://flathub.org/apps/io.github.theforceengine.tfe [External Link]
https://snapcraft.io/the-force-engine [External Link]

As of time of writing not yet updated though. So packagers, please update soon
This is what I've been waiting for so I can play Dark Forces easily on Steam Deck. I'm also waiting for Outlaws support as I'd like to play that again too.

Cattle Country is Red Dead Redemption meets Stardew Valley

Quoting: ElectricPrismStardew Valley was made because Harvest Moon SNES never got a proper successor for decades by a super fan turned dev tycoon.

This was made because ??? Stardew Valley made a lot of money ???

Which to me makes it feel like it's a: "The Product".

I won't know if it has a soul or not until the reviews start to roll in.

It's graphically "adequate", but as the Nausicaan's say: "you talk and you talk, but you have no guramba!"

We will see if it has guramba or not.
I'm with you on that, it's a Stardew-clone, but maybe some people are excited about a Western-themed take on that game.
My wife has played at least three Stardew clones and they're mostly quite similar with few notable improvements. SDC creator really nailed it right out of the gate, it's hard to improve on what he built.

Steam Summer Sale 2024 is live now

This sale I'm pretty much joining the New Steam Sales Naysayers in that a lot of the stuff I'm interested in is actually more expensive than it has been in recent sales due to either a price increase, a lower discount, or both. The rest is either not on sale at all, or nowhere near a price point I'd pull the trigger at.
I suspect that publishers have decided not to drastically discount their titles to the degree that they used to, despite the desperately immense competition on the Steam store from all the titles competing for our dollars. Heavy discounts encourage players to wait for another heavy discount again. So why bother with that when you could decide 30% is your title's lifetime max discount?
Combine that with standard price creeps, e.gm Skyrim's slow base-price increase, and we have a recipe for higher prices and less interesting sales. Combine that with many of ours' bloated steam libraries and we probably aren't buying much at all.

Cosmic horror post-apocalyptic RPG Death Trash has a teaser for a new update

Waiting on 1.0 here, forgot I had removed the game from my wishlist even since I was tired of seeing it there but still in EA.

Ancient Forge are giving away a custom-skin Steam Deck for Hotel Galactic

Quoting: CybolicUhm, those terms.... (emphasis mine)
Surely that can't be legal? Signing over the rights to one's name, likeness and voice in perpetuity in order to enter a contest?
They just mean they want the right to re-post your Twitter/Insta/Tiktok on their socials pages. This is strictly a publicity tactic, and I'd be quite surprised if the winner of this isn't the one with the highest profile social media accounts with the most followers who makes the best post advertising the game. Hence why I never bother with Gleam giveaways as I don't use twitter/insta/tiktok, I'm a faceless anonymous gamer: my chances of winning are dead in the water. If I won, they'd simply say "congratulations chickenb00 on winning a custom Steam Deck!" and they couldn't even @ me.

Edit to add: This is quite a nice custom deck, though a bit bright... The game looks nice though. Spirited Away, The Game, basically

Selaco is now in Early Access - one of the best shooters I've played in forever

Quoting: GuestI'm very very tempted to break my "No Early Access" rule for this one... the demo itself felt so damn good.
I may break my No Early Access rule as well, based on Liam saying Chapter 1 is complete, and Chapter 2 is intended for 1.0. That's plenty of maps to play and the game sounds highly polished. By the time 1.0 releases it may be 2026, who knows...

Awesome GZDoom shooter Selaco will delist the demo (but you can still get it)

we expect to leave Early Access in 2026.
So ....... see you in three years.
Oooof. That's a really long wait.

With a Nintendo Switch 2 on the way, I hope Valve make a Steam Deck 2

Wishing for eGPU support is wishful thinking, people: have you looked into reviews of say the Asus ROG Flow? Not only does it need a proprietary connector to have the right throughput, but it's frequently janky and often requires whole reboots to have it work! When we achieve hotswapped eGPU ports to gain +80% performance, without rebooting and without display errors, I'll buy, but not before.
I have little faith that eGPU would be well-implemented for a Linux device, even by Valve. And the expense -- those things are not cheap, and you would still be bound by the CPU in the deck itself. If that's upgraded to a 6/12 it would be better, but anyone with a Radeon 7800+ would be losing performance, and then you'd have people whining if they can't use their Nvidia cards.
It's simply too big an ask.
