TJD is awesome! Backed that one without even thinking about it. The first two chapters were just excellent and if anything the second was probably better than the first. Money well invested.
Civilization: Beyond Earth - Rising Tide Expansion Released & Thoughts From A Civ Addict

Take Paradox as the example of how to do DLC right. The base games are amazing (and continue to get improved upon for YEARS after release), while the expansions are reasonably priced and aimed at people who have already enjoyed the base game a lot and want some new content. There's a reason why so many people love Paradox as a company and will drop £10-15 on some DLC without thinking twice about it. They've developed an enthusiastic and loyal fanbase from doing things "right" and not just hid behind the success of a brand under the false pretence that they can just release anything at any price and people will pay.
To make things clear though, I don't think Firaxis OWE anyone anything and they clearly have no obligation to add free content - I think that attitude of entitlement which many gamers have is misplaced. But I felt conned after paying full price for the base game and now I'm in the same camp as @keyrock - I'll wait until a "complete edition" comes out and then grab that on sale and will do the same for any future Firaxis game as long as they continue doing what is unfortunately becoming very common in the games industry.

Quoting: BTREThe game was playable, just comparatively (to Civ 5 + expansions) bland. I think that calling it an intentional lack of content or claiming that they owe anything else beyond the patches they release for free is disingenuous. Games cost money to make and once you define your project scope you can't go adding in features late in development without risking to screw yourself financially. Like I noted in my review, I still got 60ish hours of gameplay from the product they previously released, so I can't with a straight face say it was bad or unplayable. Was I disappointed that they squandered potential? Sure but I feel like that about most entertainment. If I hadn't had any fun, I'd have stopped playing much earlier. If it had been an 8 hour long AAA FPS for that price, then yeah, I guess I'd have felt I wasn't getting my moneys' worth.Hence why I said it makes good business sense to do what they do, but they're not making friends (the bad reviews with the base game speak for themselves). I'm not opposed to the idea of DLC at all, I just really dislike the idea of intentionally excluding content for a game to then flog it an an additional price later on - I don't think that's a disingenuous statement at all, that's very clearly what happened here. Most people were OK with it with Civ 5 (when the base game had features missing which were in Civ 4) but with BE it's just way too blatant and made even worse by the fact that the expansion costs almost as much as the base game.
As for the "Free DLC" - they're really not doing that just out the goodness of their hearts, you know. Much like the upcoming Divinity: Original Sin revamp, Wasteland 2 is getting that update because of financial reasons. Mainly that their launches coincide with console release dates. If it wasn't for that, I very much doubt that these studios would just hand out radically improved versions of their games. One way or another studios have to recoup the money they spend on development. Money, sadly, still makes the world go around.

I'm glad they've improved the base game (which was pretty underwhelming), but it's still a huge slap in the face to have to pay almost £50 in total to get the features which the base game itself should have had. Civ 5 suffered from the same apparently intentional lack of content when it first came out and then became a very good game with all the expansions.... But the standalone game was still better than the standalone BE.
It might be good business to do things this way, but it's just going to drive people away from the franchise.

Quoting: liamdaweI'm in the same camp here.Quoting: linuxgamerI don't think this is an mishap since its so easy to filter for "hl3":Yeah, yeah I know. Every time I pick it up I'm just not hooked by it for some reason, it's odd. I should probably dedicate some time to actually finishing it
eg:grep -r "hl3" .goes even deeper.
Quoting: liamdaweI still haven't finished Half-Life 2,WTF, Half-Life 2 is one of the most sold PC titles ever and its metascore of 96/100 is just incredible.
Co-Op Stealth Game Clandestine May See a Linux Port

I think after it's out of Beta, I'll probably install it on my SSD and leave a HDD for the standard desktop (unless a very nice desktop experience on SteamOS arises, in which case I'd happily use it for both). I for one am certainly behind it, at least for gaming.

Quoting: ZekThePenguinThe quotes given are exactly why we should all build or buy a SteamOS box. Is it the best distro out there? Not at all! However, if that will be the measuring stick developers are watching to see if Linux is a viable platform, we should do our best to stand and be counted so they have a better metric of just how many Linux gamers there are. Developers have shied away from Linux because there is no standard to develop for, and SteamOS will be that standard for them. We just need to get behind it. Up to this point, the many different distros have also skewed the surveys and made it difficult for developers to get a head-count. If we all buy our games using SteamOS that should improve.I recently installed SteamOS for the first time on a "homemade" Steam Machine I made for someone, and even in Beta it's infinitely better to use for gaming than your standard Linux distros. No faff, no driver issues or anything - just the latest drivers. Turn it on and you're ready to game, nothing else to tweak or even think about. I was pretty impressed to say the least, and can see why people would want to use it and why developers prefer supporting it.

Been waiting for this to come out in full for a while now. This was one of the games that convinced me to stay away from Early Access - I don't want to be bored of a game before it's even finished, especially if it looks really good like this one does. Luckily I only played just over an hour in EA so get to play the finished thing :D

Quoting: boomanMaybe they should support one Distro like most games do. Reccomend Ubuntu or Mint as a standard. Most just support Ubuntu, but I can imagine getting a tonne of emails and forum posts about some minor issue on some obscure distribution and having to deal with each one can be very time consuming and it's kind of hard to turn people away saying "nope, we only support Debian-based distros" or whatever. I think that's essentially what happened with Expeditions: Conquistador and I suspect that's also why it's easier to just say "we support SteamOS, it may work on other distributions, but no promises".
I can't imagine how much work it takes to support all the distro's out there and all the different hardware as well.
Does Unity 3D support a specific Distro?

New Linux Gaming Survey For October

Quoting: natewardawgThanks for the new survey.I added it now. Haven't had many responses yet and it seems like too important an option to miss out :)
The most important factor for me (and probably many others) would be ratings and reviews, which aren't listed.
Thanks! :)
Quoting: tmtvlIsn't there a way to add multiple radio buttons to an input thing?Basically only on a question-by-question basis can you do this (Ie each of the answers would have to be its own question). I was thinking the exact same thing when putting in the question, it would be super useful but alas no :(
So you could have done that last question as a 1 to 5 scale of importance?
Anyway, looking forward to seeing September's results.

Oh nice! Not really too in favour of Kickstarter nowadays, but really want to finish of this adventure since the first two chapters were fantastic and know these guys can deliver. Will be backing this ASAP :)
Thanks for publishing this Flesk! Would have had no idea about it if I hadn't seen this.
