Dear Valve and Steam Machines OEMs, you have it all wrong

Then we might have a clearer portrait about Valves's level of dedication into Linux.

Quoting: PeciskI will say this - there are many assumptions without vetting opposite scenarios in both post and comments. For example old 'slower performance' argument really doesn't matter that much for Steam Machine. It is all about package, performance is one angle, it sure helps, but is not necessarily make or break point. We might get some answers during Steam Dev Days:
Also being released after Windows can be turned around - majority of casual games really don't care when games are released. They care when they can play lot of games they want on their system. If they can, they don't really care that much of release dates. At this point it doesn't matter that much imnho. In future it will.
Overall I think we in circles with this. There are rehashed arguments without strong basis or data to chew on. Lot of speculation and assumptions.

Double Fine is doubling the good news, as there is a discounted bundle of their games on Steam

For my part, I already got Costume Quest 1 & 2 that my kids really enjoy.
I also got The Cave. Imo, this game is a jewel in itself... "Yes, yes! A talking cave. Don't laugh because it makes dating hell."

The latest Steam Hardware Survey shows a rather insignificant drop for Linux

Still I don't think it's Valve's goal with this HARDWARE survey and they are probably quite aware of the problem.

Quoting: liamdaweThis is why I'd prefer Valve to proceed like the survey here, when it comes to OS. Something like "current OS" in our user profile, that you supply on a voluntary basis, and stop triggering the survey because of an OS change. Even if some may cheat, it would give a much more accurate portrait whithout some external influence meddling with it...Quoting: MohandevirJust a guess... Is it possible that the forced Win10 upgrade is triggering a lot more survey request to Win10 users because of the configuration change?Wow, i didn't even think of that, but it is highly possible actually as it is likely that will cause the survey to appear.
It would reflect in a Linux percentage drop, giving a wrong image of the real Linux marketshare.
Things might come back to normal after July 29th...

Check out this AMD video talking about Vulkan (and DirectX12)

Edit: Oups! Sorry. I mixed this news with the 2.83 beta release of SteamOS and Liam's concern for a major SteamOS update... Still dual AMD GPUs on SteamOS would be great.

Quoting: PUN...Something like SteamOS official support for dual GPUs? :)Quoting: InspectorGidgetAMD is definitely looking more appealing as time goes on.Maybe their are planing a secret unannounced release :D
However, I must have misunderstood something. I though that if a game used Vulkan, we would just have it on Linux too... But that obviously isn't the case with DOOM.

Skylanders and the Portal on Linux... Anybody knows if it works?
I got a kid that would be really happy to play Skylanders Giants again (CD got sratched and is no longer usable).

Still it's a great alternative.
Edit: Typo.

Quoting: t3gI use Unity for my every day stuff, but I like to boot into the SteamOS login [External Link] directly from the login screen when I feel like just playing games and bypassing all the stuff that loads in the background with Unity.Yep, did that too with Thor27 repo and the compositor that you can manually install, a while ago. It's great too, but since I have other computers to do desktop stuff, I didn't need it anymore. Also, during my testing phase, I found out, it's only my personnal experience, that there was no tearing at all on SteamOS Brewmaster. Someone might have a good explanation (driver version problems) or workarounds, but ootb, this is not an issue on my DIY Steam Machine.
Still it's a great alternative.

Quoting: liamdaweFYI, I'm a daily Ubuntu user (and derivatives), full time, since 2012 and I decided to go for the full SteamOS experience with a DIY pc hooked up to my TV, dedicated to gaming, with a Steam Controller. Over time I realized that I really liked it and I decided to stick to SteamOS, for gaming.Quoting: HoriYou make a good point, sonce SteamOS is an included Distro in the list, it makes sense for me to add it. Will do so tonight. I imagine it will be so low it wont even make the graph though.Quoting: AimelaYeah but this way we could know who's running desktop Linux and who's using a Steam Machine.Quoting: MohandevirWhat about BPM for SteamOS?That's not really a desktop environment, it's literally just Big Picture Mode being run almost by itself.
Steam Machine adopters are not going to switch to Linux just because they use SteamOS on their ConsolePC... they will most probably stay with Windows or Mac or whatever OS they used before.
IMO it's important to know how many people use BPM exclusively since they get a whole different experience.
