Personnaly I will wait for a good discount to buy it but I will for sure.
Unless it is broken, I can't see why it couldn't be minimaly enjoyable. I'm no hardcore gamer.
Lately I played Megaman on my rpi (Recalbox)... Didn't had as much fun than I did on my NES, at the time. I'm not 8 years old anymore either... Maybe, for some, the problem lies there.
Edit: typo.

Keep in mind that I tried the 16.04 installation on April 22nd so, I might be outdated on the subject and it's the reason why I'm asking. :)
Besides, I'm running 16.04 on an old Core 2 Duo E8400 and it runs really well.

Quoting: Mountain ManSorry, I should have specified that the problem with Ubuntu 16.04 is documented and Skylake related. I read somewhere to wait for 16.04.1, it wil solve the issue. I was just wondering if it's been already upstreamed because, according to their website, this company is already shipping 16.04 laptops.Quoting: MohandevirThere's an easy fix for the Shadow of Mordor bug. I can't tell you what it is at the moment since I'm not at my PC, but it's a simple matter of adding some launch options in Steam.Quoting: mrmangoI have the Athena, which is essentially a Clevo. Like the ones other Linux computer sellers use. It has a 970 and it doesn't chug for me. Yeah in a few the card will not seem that fast. But if you want laptop that works with Linux and is decent with games. The range looks like a good range in general :)Yep! I got the same exact laptop but in the 17in version. I recognize the bezels on the top of the screen, the case texture and the power button look and position. Got the same hardware too but with the GTX980m. In fact, it's the computer I'm using to type this message.
For my part, it works great and the perfs are awesome. Just had to make a rollback on the gpu driver because of texture applications problems (SoM where characters had no bodies, just a floating head...) and it didn't work with Ubuntu 16.04 ootb. Mir or KDE refused to start and I was left with the desktop background without any menus. KDE was even worst, I was left with a frozen screen with an underscore. Could'nt even access the terminal. So I decided to stick to Ubuntu 14.04. Has it been fixed?
As for the Ubuntu 16.04, I can't help you there since I haven't had a lick of trouble with it.

Quoting: mr-eggWouhou! Sounds like another "Slice of Life". :)Quoting: Miqueyelaptops might save some space, but the ergonomics are compromised. use some extra gear to help that and the space is used up again. portability is really the only point for me (mostly bedroom <--> kitchen to be honest), I am quite happy with my mainframe being room sized and stationary. You add a mouse, some decent speakers, a dac maybe ? Perhaps the keyboard is nice but too restrictive for longer periods and your wrist gets pain from the hard edge on the laptop case.. so you add a keyboard .. then you add an aftermarket cooling tray underneath as it gets hot and noisy because you got tired of the quarterly clean out required.
a mobile VR gaming rig would be sweet though 8D
cheers,
Michael
You bought a larger model with a 17" screen the image is ok (60hz 1080p) but the screen isn’t a patch on a dedicated monitor. so you decide to use a spare one lying around and prefer the two screen setup ... 'but if only that screen was bigger' .
Finally you decide that you love the portability potencial and yet end up only using it in one place as the environment is quieter and nicer and you can get work done, plus the 17" model was a bit too heavy to carry around with it's 300w power supply.
Two years later it can't play the latest games anymore and on a late night gaming session you accidentally spill half a pint of beer over it, jumping back only to rip off your headphones that are in the side socket.. right next to the USB pen that can only just manage to cram in next to the other USB for the mouse and oddly placed HDMi connector.
The laptop gets cleaned up and used as a server / streaming machine under the TV.

Thanks Dubi for the benchmarks, we have another point of view on the situation.
All is not as gloomy as it seemed, afterall... In fact, your benchmarks are quite positively impressive.

Quoting: Mountain ManThanks but unfortunately, SolidWorks is Windows only.Quoting: Mohandevir...Besides...I'm not a big fan of OSX or Apple in general, but I do know in my experience that it's far more stable and reliable than Windows. Our Windows machines at my job are always a mess while OSX always "just works". I can't tell you how many times we've solved a problem with a Windows computer by replacing it with a Mac.
Slice of life:
I'm working for a CAD company and we just upgraded our workstations to Win10... Not new workstations. Just a full and clean Win10 reinstall...
Conclusion:
if the situation apllies to gaming too, I can live with lower fps if it permits to avoid loads of BSODs... Crap! I've never seen that much BSODs in my entire life! Not one workstation... On all worksations with diffrent hardware configurations ranging from i7-2600 to i7-4790 with quadro gpus. Yuk! Yuk! Yuk!
End of slice of life, but still funny. :)

Quoting: dubigrasuI'm doing one now for my own curiosity, but not so extensive (with 4K and so on), just 1080. I might add a graph for it if you're curious, but video no.Great! I'd be happy if you could share us your graph. Thanks!
Don't have much time and I think I'll wait a while for things to settle down (with Dota itself & drivers) before doing a video.

It might not be the problem, but I feel, too, that using a brand new GTX 1070-1080 may not give a fair portrait of Linux performances. Usually it requires a couple of driver's iterations to get it's full capacity.

Quoting: dubigrasuWell, the options in Dota are Exclusive Fullscreen, Windowed and Borderless Window. Not trying to impose anything, but is it possible for you to do a benchmark for Dota2 Vulkan? You are my favorite source when it comes to Linux/Windows benchmarks. You are doing an awesome job. :)

Steam Machines are dead in the water according to Ars, not quite

Basically, Steam Machines are mini-itx PCs with SteamOS. Nobody loses when buying à Steam Machine. I hope it doesn't happen, but you can still install Windows on it, if SteamOS is not to your taste.
SteamOS is Valve's developper's target platform that opens the door to other Linux distributions. They are putting much efforts to smoothen the ports to this platform so that the costs involved in developping a Linux version becomes a no-brainer: "Bah, it's not that hard, let's do it."
If Valve achieve this goal, developpers that don't publish on Linux will do So for "political" reasons... Shame on them!
In that aspect, Valve has still lots of work to do. The adoption of Vulkan and support for VR devices are key aspects.
We only have to keep in mind that the whole Steam for Linux initiative is still in a beta stage in Valve times, unless M$ does something foolish with the Windoze store that raises Gaben's ire... It's only a matter of time. :)
