CachyOS gets experimental handheld edition for ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion GO and Steam Deck (soon)

First time hearing about this distro and they seem to provide a lot of desktop environment options in the installer if you're not into KDE or Gnome. So far, I haven't see them mention about a Gaming Mode like Bazzite and Nobara but will check it out once they're done with their handheld mode setup.

LPCAMM2 upgradeable RAM for laptops sounds awesome

It's cool that this type of technology exist but it just feels like manufacturers will continue to use the model of soldered on RAM because they can charge more for it. It would be cool though if future Steam Deck models used this so that we can upgrade the RAM to whatever capacity it can handle.

Square Enix shifting from "quantity to quality" and be more multi-platform

Quoting: FutureSutureReleasing their games on GOG would be a pleasant surprise.
They do release some games on GOG but not all, unfortunately. As for what Square Enix has in mind, the CEO did mention about going back to the multiplatform nature of the business and since their aim is quality over quantity, we're probably going to see less games like Front Mission, Live-A-Live and Harvestella and more Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts.

I really miss the days when Square and Enix were separate companies doing their own RPGs because they made some of the best games during those periods.

NVIDIA switching to open kernel modules by default in future driver update for Turing+

This is pretty much how I still picture Nvidia today as I do back in the early 2000's, when they refuse to open source their graphics drivers while ATI Radeon (before AMD acquired them) did. They can contribute to the open kernel module all they want but unless they start providing open source graphic drivers, I'm not interested in what they do.
Your timeline is entirely wrong. Ati didn't open source their drivers; they had the proprietary fglrx (which was terrible) and they provided some information to some open source developers under NDA - the open source drivers were predominantly reverse-engineered (just like nouveau). AMD didn't switch their focus from fglrx to the open source drivers till a year after they'd bought Ati - after pressure and an implementation from Novell.
Thanks for correcting me on this. I keep forgetting all these details.

SteamOS 3.6 Preview for Steam Deck brings numerous big new features

Quoting: JarmerI wonder why it's running kernel 6.5 ...? Current stable is 6.8 and even the lts release is at 6.6.
I suspect that they stay on 6.5 since it works great for their needs and there's no need to move up a version unless there is something that they provide that 6.5 doesn't.

Quoting: ArehandoroThis is very interesting! Soon I'll be able to turn on the TV, sit on the sofa... and not having to curse and get up again because I forgot to turn the Deck on
I know what you mean because I have to turn on the Steam Deck with the Dock plugged into it in order to see the Gaming Mode appear before I plug the adapter into the outlet to get it to run from power. It's a fight I have to deal with every time I want to use the Dock but hopefully SteamOS 3.6 fixes this issue like they say in the release notes.

The Metroidvania Mania Humble Bundle has some delightful treats inside

I would've been all over this if I didn't have 1/2 the games that were on the list.

With a Nintendo Switch 2 on the way, I hope Valve make a Steam Deck 2
8 May 2024 at 4:31 pm UTC Likes: 2

My take on this is that I won't buy the Switch 2 because the Steam Deck still satisfies my gaming without whatever restrictions that Nintendo likes to do with their console. Also, as I've mentioned in the past, I'm not giving anymore money to them for all the crap they've been pulling for decades on and even their games do nothing for me nowadays.

As for the Steam Deck 2, it'd be cool if they could add support for eGPUs since that would make it nice to play games with better performance/resolution when docked. Also, as many others have said, a better battery to last longer while on the go. Other than that, the Steam Deck has been an awesome device for me and I would gladly buy a Steam Deck 2 whenever it gets released.

Sounds like you're setting up for a LAN party (if that's still a thing)

I guess it took enough complaints from players to oppose this change when it should've never happened in the first place.
