A French court has ruled that Valve should allow people to re-sell their digital games

Being honest, this pure digital distribution is different to what
we had back then for games or even more for the book example.
If you sell a used book, it's used - no matter how hard you try.
Those old game boxed were usually plastic sealed and you had to open them.
From my experience the cardbox boxes suffered as did the jewel case plus the CD.
All I want to say is this: Usually a used product is not mint anymore.
It shows signs of use that is represented in the price when you resell it.
This is completely gone for digital products.
You sell something that's perfectly the same as you bought it first hand.
There is no price on the consumption of the game anymore, which is what the
developer actually wants to get paid for - and that's fair, isn't it?
It's a dilemma.

Quoting: SalvatosI'm not yet having a position on all this yet, tbh.Quoting: pbThat's it, I'm telling my son right now to stop dreaming of developing games. This basically legalises keyshops and now even allowing you to sell the games you're already played and finished, if it wasn't bad enough before... Piracy killed Amiga gaming, socialism will kill PC gaming? Can we maybe not be so dramatic? Some of us are old enough to remember that that’s how it was for the majority of video gaming’s existence. And books, DVDs, cars, etc. Sure it would be a disruptive change, but as long as it doesn’t open the door to duplication (piracy), the market can adapt. It might not be pretty for a while, but it won’t just die like that.

Quoting: mphuZValve and developers will be more profitable to abandon the entire French market than to allow users to sell their digital games. :wink:Well, if it's really based on an EU law this could gain some momentum that eventually will affect large parts of Europe. That'll be a bit harder to abandon, I guess.

Maybe we then see publishers an stores switching to renting models and new stores popping up.
You won't (be able to) buy games, you rent them.
Guess the GOL community isn't going to like that.
Yet, in the end this might even help the quality of games,
as you only pay if you really play.
At least that's the renting model I would prefer.
Just my 2 cents. :)

Why doesn't this automatically affect other digital game stores in France immediately?
Someone hast to go to court against Epic, GOG, ... separately, one by one?
Hard to believe, as the concepts of the stores are basically the same, when it comes to DRM and not being able to resell the purchases made.

The demo was really fun, indeed.
If you can get your hands on the "Typing of the Dead: 1/2/Overkill" games...
They are fantastic typing games imho.
According to WINE's AppDB it should work fine.
Quoting: xaviNo, I do not liked Epistory, I am more on the typing and less on the story or good graphics.Yep, didn't like it too.

Plus, they are not that common.
You make it sound like we get hundreds of articles a day.
Seriously, where is the problem? :)
Or is it just that you want to tell us that you absolutely don't like this topic. ;)

Quoting: dubigrasuHow can I filter out these kind of not (really) gaming related topics?Non-gaming related articles are usually extremely easy to spot on the main page.
I tried adding in the filter the tag "Misc" (the tag for this article), but then I loose good gaming related articles that happen to carry the same "Misc" tag.

Btw, you should avoid the word SJW even if you have to force yourself. ;)

Quoting: minidouThank you!Quoting: EikeYou fell into the misinformation trap laid by some SJW.Quoting: spayder26Actually he was not defending Epstein (he called him rapist), but declaring his opinion against laws against consented paedophilia, which is somewhat much more controversial. You seem to have information differing from mine.
I read that he found the "most plausible scenario" that the girls have been "entirely willing".
Does anybody find it appropriate to do such talk about possible severe crimes without any knowledge of what actually has happened?
What RMS said :
We can imagine many scenarios, but the most plausible scenario is that she presented herself to him as entirely willing. What Selam Jie Gano concluded :
he says that an enslaved child could, somehow, be “entirely willing”.What Vice wrote :
Early in the thread, Stallman insists that the “most plausible scenario” is that Epstein’s underage victims were “entirely willing” while being trafficked. What the headlines are
Computer scientist Richard Stallman, who defended Jeffrey Epstein, resigns from MITThis is absolute bullshit. RMS is very clear on the gullibility of Epstein in his emails (calls him a rapist). He barely defended the use of the appropriate wording when speaking about Minsky affair. Which is that from his (Minksy) POV, the girl was consenting, even if she was in fact coerced by Epstein.

"He is quilty of something. he is definitely guilty of something. You don't just resign from somewhere, there must have something going on."It's because of this malign and twisted argumentation why innocent people sometimes get burned for the rest of their life.

Quoting: EikeOf course he is exactly that.Quoting: SchattenspiegelYay another witch hunt!Well, one obvious difference is that nobody has been actually set on fire and died.
Why do I always have to wonder if the hunters really feel themselves morally driven to burn people at the stake or if they just use this tool of public assassination to further their own immoral agendas?
There does not seem to be much evolution in that department from the earliest stages of recorded history. does there?

Quoting: rustybroomhandleFor those rushing to RMS' defense. This is just one thing in a long list of things. For all the good he has done, it's really not the person that you should want as the face of free software.Well, this might have been just the intention of those that now use this well-proven method to get rid of him.
