Quoting: SamsaiI went through the binary using a hex editor and there aren't any mentions of VP, eON or Wine for that matter. So I believe it's safe to say it's a native port.
Not finding any of those potential strings does not mean anything AFAIK.
They could have just stripped some object files of the build, right?

Quoting: liamdaweSee update #2, this is not a VP/eON port.
Just curious, can we rule out a Winelib approach?

It even got a Gold/Platinum rating:

Quoting: DamonLinuxPLFrom what you know "it is native"? Can anybody explain?
Virtual Programming lists Dead Island on their web page: http://www.vpltd.com [External Link]

While this might be just related to the Mac version, couldn't it just be they try hard to make an eON "port" less obvious?
yes...somehow dead island executable is 790,2MB...thats fishy imo.
my conspiracy theory is that the wrapper is hidden inside :D
Almost a gig, really? :O

Nvidia GPU-Accelerated PhysX Now Available On Linux

Quoting: Armand RaynalYou don't know which APIs is best, and I tell you I know. OpenCL is best.
Because it is 'libre'. Performance isn't the more important point.
I want to add that CUDA isn't a better "performing" API than OpenCL.
It's just an API. Unless not completely broken (which OpenCL isn't),
the API does not affect performance much.

Leaving that aside, the APIs don't even differ that much:
Porting CUDA Applications to OpenCL [External Link]

The implementation (also the hardware, ofc) is what matters to the performance.
IMHO there is no valid reason why Nvidia couldn't make OpenCL perform as good
on their hardware as CUDA currently does.

Quoting: drmothThis is rather fantastic news.
I see this as a continuation of the extensive flexibility of Linux in the face of other OS'es locking themselves down.
...
The Linux immune system just got a little stronger, like a giant amoeba (think Akira) absorbing all in its path!
Are you trolling or just plain ignorant? :S:

Quoting: DeformalI like complaining and mentions like: "O, this is closed source, we do not need it!"
So what the problem? You may ignore buying games with PhysX. And even more, you can ignore all selling games, because almost all of games are closed source.
Again, the problem is not closed source vs. open source in this case.
It's the vendor lock-in coming with PhysX and CUDA.
This has prefectly nothing to do with it being closed source.

Pursuing vendor lock-ins (like PhysX and CUDA) does not go very well with the philosophy of Linux.
Supporting them is not a manifestation of freedom as it may seem to some of you, but quite the contrary in the mid/long term.
