Shadow of the Tomb Raider is officially coming to Linux in 2019

Very nice news! This will be a certain purchase for me.

Like several others have already stated; I'll only consider buying "Proton/Steam Play" titles once they are "whitelisted", once there is virtually zero chanse of a native port and once they are old enough to be sold cheaply.

That won't change unless the whole "landscape" of linux gaming changes to full & perfect Proton compatibility at release for all new & recent games. Something I'm not expecting to see happening anytime soon.

Feral Interactive are teasing a new Linux port, time to start guessing

Quoting: jensIn my opinion it's the other way around. Linux is loosing some native games in the sort term due to Proton. But in the end Proton may help to substantially increase Linux market share and visibility to reach a point where Linux will be considered earlier in the gaming development process. This may lead to more native games in the end.
Hopefully it goes that way. My pessimism is from actually being around in the OS/2 and DOS era, and watching OS/2 disappear when it basically became redundant once it was DOS/Windows compatible. Developers saw that they could just develop for Windows and not worry about OS/2, as it was compatible. We all know how that one ended.

So I see some dangerous parallels here. But maybe I am just being overly pessimistic. If you're into computers for long enough, you begin to see history repeat itself. Just gives me an uneasy feeling.

Anyway, enough of a distraction from this thread. I hope (and expect) this to be Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which will be a day-1 buy for me. I won't buy the Windows version for exactly the reasons stated above.
I've thought quite a bit about that parallel, ever since "Proton" first was announced. (I think I used OS/2 Warp for about a year, it came preinstalled on a laptop) It has kept me (still keeps me) feeling rather ambivalent about the whole project. I just hope the situations then and now are far to different, for there to be any risk of a similar outcome.

This sounds great, I'll propably start playing this after I finish "Pathfinder" then.

Valve has expanded the Steam Play whitelist to include DARK SOULS III and plenty more

Huh, that's the second whitelist in a row without a single game of interest for me. Bad luck of the draw i suppose, still I would have hoped that Valve would prioritize: aaa-titles, games with "large crtical acclaim" and games from big studios that have neglected linux in the past.

If you enjoy these weekly posts to roundup a few loose ends, do let me know so I will continue them.
Thank you, I do find them quite enjoyable. There's always a great deal happening, so all kinds of "summaries of recent events" as well as "roundups of things you might have missed" are much appreciated. :)

As for what I've been playing: I finished "Vigilantes" on friday and since then I've been playing a bit of "Stalker: SoC" and a bit of "Singularity" using Proton.

Quoting: TheRiddickcharacter models need updating also, and increases to textures, I wish companies would go to that effort, would be awesome. Atm the enemies look a bit hilarious and hard to take serious :)
From what I understood, they did some initial tweaks and were planning on enhancing all the things as they go along.
True, from what I understand it will be a gradual process over time until the whole game eventually looks reasonably "Up to Date".

That is part of what's been keeping me away from playing it on steam. It feels like a shame to play through it again now, only to have the entire campaign look 10X better in 6-12 months of time. Right now, I'm eager to see what comes from this quote:

"New character and weapon models for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition are getting closer! As soon as we’re ready, we’ll be sure to share a few amazing screenshots!"

The recent Steam Play beta is now out for everyone, plus a minor beta update

Tried a few games with 3.7-8: "Gray Matter" and "Sleeping Dogs" (original edition) still won't start. "Fallout 3 GotY" still gives me blackscreen with a cursor. However, "Alan Wake" starts again, I don't think it has worked since one of the first Proton versions, it also has music in the main menu for the first time.

First-person adventure about sunken Russian sub KURSK to have a delayed Linux release

Felt very sceptical about this idea but I have to admit the video does look good. I assume that the objective is to escape the sub with military secrets before you-know-what happens.

Still, I always feel strange playing in an actual historical scenario. It's one thing if it's meant to be an alternate history like "Wolfenstein: The New Order" but otherwise I just wonder why they didn't simply make up a completly fictional scenario like "The Hunt for Red October" for example.

Quoting: theghostFYI, planned release date is December 2018 / January 2019.
Thanks, that's good to know. I'm kind of regretting now that I already spent a dozen or so hours in the game. This is shaping up so nicely that I'll be sure to start a fresh game once it's released. I think this one will be a winner. ;)
