yes there is tax exemptions but there is also:
1)an free publicit for the company.
2)political influence (for example, if you government give up this idea of using linux/teaching how to use linux , to gain technologycal independence, then we will not remove our contributions to charity/jobs)
but yeah, you are right, if i was billionaire i would use part of my money for an good cause, i was just kidding.
the main issue is: most bilionaries made their profit in ethical questionable ways, so its a matter : the means justify the ends.

Quoting: Artenyou forgot to mention 2 things...Quoting: elmapulDo you have billion of dollars?Quoting: Arteni certainly never wasted billion of dollars into something not expecting profits in return.Quoting: BielFPsYes that's why they can safely invest in a new concept like this one. Valve is in a unique position where they're consolidate as the top game store in the world and doesn't have shareholders to answer too, but this doesn't mean they don't want profit.I didn't say they didn't want to profit from it. I wrote that we can't be sure why they're doing it, and I listed profit as one option.
If for some reason investing on linux would result only in expenses they would never invest on it.
You've never done anything for any reason other than profit? Or are Valve shareholders of a different species than you? Maybe you'd be right if they were Ferengi.
You think all the billionaires giving away their assets to charity are doing it for profit? Some of them do it for taxes, but part of it gives away so much that it doesn't make tax sense. They're doing it for something other than monetary gain. Some do it for a good feeling, someone else to be accepted back into the human race (Gates). Nobel, for example, created the Nobel Prize because he wanted to improve his reputation.
I keep saying valve can do it for profit (which I personally don't think is a bad thing), but they doesn't have to. They can count on losses to be acceptable or they can even guess that they might be profitable, but we don't have the information to say they're doing it for profit. Even that profit may end up being a side benefit of their efforts to do it for a different purpose.

you seem like someone who prefer an game to never exist than to exit for a few time.

Quoting: ShabbyXat the worst case scenario, they disable this feature and the game do work.Quoting: BielFPsThat's a sure way of making sure your game is completely unplayable in 5 years is what that is.Quoting: ShabbyXThey did this to take advantage of the Cortana's AI, despite the "Windows dependency" part, I think this was actually pretty smart of them.Quoting: BielFPs... that Phasmophobia requires Cortana to use the voice functions of the game, ...Wow, that's so braindead.

Quoting: AussieEeveeGTA V is such a pain to run under Proton. If your computer, like mine, is underpowered and not running a high enough graphics card, it doesn't seem to work right.i saw somewhere that the issue is the ammount of code that has to be translated and if its cpu code or gpu code...
In Windows, I get about 45-60FPS, depending on what's going on... with most settings turned to low.
In Linux, I get 5FPS, same settings.
GTA is the only game I've played where the Linux performance is worse than the Windows performance, so I chalk it up to either my card being rubbish (It is. GTX 960 2GB) or the game itself.
Of course, none of this really matters to the Steam Deck, but I just wanted to ramble about this..
But yeah, in my experience, most games tend to work unless broken by anti-cheat... and this list confirms that.

i would get excited but we saw this movie before, and the last time it was more exciting...
game engines were the ones who started supporting linux, but the marketshare didnt moved an inch, we get just a few AAA native games, the number of AAA decreassed over time and some games stop working after a few time due to linux breaking backward compatibility or if the game was something with constant updates, the linux marketshare wasnt worth it.
steam deck can change it since it has an higher demmand, lets hope story dont repeat itselft, but let keep our expectations in check.

i would like to donate to this game, but there is an chicken and egg problem.
the game isnt good, so i dont the urge to donate, but the game will never improve if people dont donate.
now, i know that a lot of people will disagree with me that "the game isnt good", so let me explain:
there are 2 types of players of mascot racing games...
casual gamers who play the campaing, and competitive who play... the time trial!
i mean, sure you can compete against other players, but usually where those games really shiny is on the time trial, at least that was the case for DDKR64 and Mario Kart DS, playing against other people is fine, but its hard to find some one as good as me at those games, and itens dont help to see who is the best in some games, if anything they actually harm the balancing, because you have to focus on dodging rather than chosing the best path or even worse: you can play flawless and still lose because you were hit by something, sometimes the best strategy may be stay behind so you can fire anything in front of you, instead of taking the lead and being the target, TL:DR the itens arent properly balanced , the interfer too much in the result so it become more "luck based" or "item based" than "skill based".
on time trial on the other hand, you solve both problems, each player has an equal oportunity to win and you always have one rival as good as you, even if that rival is yourself, your ghost.
as some on who played countless times on ancient lake from DDKR64, and had an lap time with something arround 14 seconds and something, im a bit more critical on how whell an game controls, how whell designed are the levels etc than an casual player that only care about if he is having fun or not.
dont get me wrong, there is nothing about being an casual player in something, im totally casual at fighting games, i dont know even how to do an hadouken (i dont have muscle memory to perform it even if i know in theory)
its just that... i dont know, as anyone i have an limited budget so i have to have priorities, my gamer side says:
"you should only fund games that are worth it, otherwise the world will be full of crap games that dont worth the time of the players compared to old school games"
and my FLOSS enthusiasts side says:
"FLOSS software desperate need funding, most of the time they strugle to get any funding to hire full time employees and that is the reason why they cant make great products"
as someone who was almost poor and could only afford 1 game per year during my childhood, i really want to support the idea of free games avaliable for everyone.
as someone who aways wanted to make my own games and know that not everyone will be able to, having open source games is a dream (Despite the fact that i never touched this code, and i doubt i will understand anything, that its easy to understand)
and as someone with an quite limited budget... i cant make the difference in this project, so i rather donate to someone who is almost hiring one more employee than someone who will just have one more lunch per day with the donation.

if making your own store was cheaper than selling on thirdy party stores, many companies would sell their own products by then selves nowadays, but that is not the case.
the cost for valve to store unsold units and sell then by thenselves may not worth it in some regions, outsource it to someone who better understand this market may be an better solution.

Quoting: Slyvanvalve is an software company, they may not have the physical infra structure and economics of scale to distribute it thenselves at an low cost.Quoting: DerpFoxI hope not steam had to cut their budget already. Distribution through other companies could make the steam deck .ore expensive aka less desirable then a switch for the normies.Quoting: CatKillerSo now all Valve need to do is keep this device highly desirable, and sell enough units that it represents a significant number of users rather than a potentially significant number of potential users. That will be a big problem if Valve keep selling their hardware exclusively on Steam and not in the usual store circuit. Particularly for the Deck, whatever people say it's not just an ultra-mobile gaming computer it's a handheld console. And console sell way better when you can found them everywhere.
EZ.
