A new Valve game for the Steam Deck? It's not out of the realm of possibility

Quoting: scaineif that was illegal, then epic would be in serious trouble, since they charge 5% on games made on unreal, 12% on games sold on epic store, but if you make an game on unreal and sell it on epic store you only pay 12%Quoting: PhiladelphusI kind of like the sound of that, but I feel like it's somehow illegal? Like selling petrol cheaper if you drive a Ford? Some kind of favouritism that I suspect regulators would take a dim view of.Quoting: CatKillerHmm, what about 5% less Valve fee on every Linux purchase only? Then developers have incentive to make a good Linux version and to get people to buy it on Linux, without Valve necessarily having to play gatekeeper. Players can vote with their wallets and refund if they don't like it. Hearing devs begging players to buy on Linux would be amazing. :whistle:Quoting: subIf Valve is serious about Linux, I'd still propose charging like 5 % less Valve fee if the published game features a Linux build. That wouldn't help.
Sure, it would encourage them to press the "build for Linux" button for some free money, which is more than many devs do, but it wouldn't encourage them to do any testing or provide any support. At all.
"But," you might say, "the discount should only apply to proper Linux versions, not those other ones," and suddenly Valve has to be a gatekeeper, creating lots of uncertainty for devs as to whether they'll have their funds withheld, and Valve are having to do (a lot) more work in exchange for less money.
Of course, the time to have done something like that is a few years ago, since any purchases on an unmodified Steam Deck will be a Linux purchase anyway, which would skew the numbers somewhat once it comes out (I think that's how it works even if you play on Proton, right?). But maybe that'll make developers more interested in a Linux version if the fraction of Linux purchases goes up over time even without any direct monetary incentives on Valve's part…

there is no such thing as an world without exclusives, there is either what we have on consoles where sony, microsoft and nintendo make their own exclusives and get 1/3 of the market each, or what we have on pc where an single player get 90% of the marketshare and the others strugle to grow because they only have an subset of windows games/softwares.
its either "every one make they own exclusives" or "everything become windows exclusive" and we strugle to build tools like proton.
i would love to see valve make something exclusive and ask gamers to direct their anger toward sony/nintendo/microsoft for locking mac/linux users out of their content for so long, be mad at then, not us, if they stop doing it, we will stop.
it has been proven again and again that you cant grow without at least temporary exclusives.

Quoting: Liam Dawesay that to microsoft with their directX stuff.Quoting: TeodosioI would like to see a new game from Valve, released on GNU/Linux only.Exclusives are bad.

unpopular opinion...
they should make their next game... linux exclusive.
otherwise people will keep seeing windows as capable of doing everything linux does, while they dont see linux as capable of doing everything windows do.
it need to be at least temporary exclusive.

Valve corrects the RAM specs for the Steam Deck, games should run nicely from SD Card

"Yep, games will load faster off internal storage, but games still play great off an SD card. When IGN came by, all the games they tried (and shot footage of) were played off a microSD card."
i guessed that that would be the case, they would show the worst case scenario instead of the best to not disapoint anyone, but it still impressive!

Ubisoft are keeping an eye on the Steam Deck, will release on it if it's big enough

valve broke part of the chiken problem by making tons of games work on linux, now we need to break the egg problem (lack of users) but even that thing might not be enough to do such change.
i dont want linux to have "an subset of windows games" forever
as for ubisoft porting, i hope they will indeed, the issue is:
if most of the users keep linux at it, and this device sell like hotcakes, they will port for sure.
if most users install windows on it, then valve played their cards wrong again and linux might lose the only opportunity it ever had of actually growing.
on a side note, assuming that valve threat this thing like an console (stay with it for ~5 years instead of launching an sucessor all the time like on pc) and that no other company manage to enter this market with an better deal, how many units do you think this thing can sell before we start the next gen of devices? (nintendo launches switch 2, valve launches dex2 , sony/microsoft might try to enter this market)
i hope it sell as well as an console would, 80~150 millions, this is not as much as pc sell by any means, but its enough to convince all the biggest developers to support it.
i think it has the potential to sell 80 millions, maybe even 100 millions, not much more than this, but valve probably would launch an sequel before that happens and many games may only work on the latest devices as it happens to pc.

Quoting: Guesti didnt said that valve will stop investing in linux, i just want to break the need of protonDB by breaking the chicken and egg problem.Quoting: elmapulbut the issue is: people will just install windows on it.I don't see this like an issue at all:
- #1 Probably, Valve invested so much in Linux Gaming to sell this device.
- #2 They expected userbase to switch operating system *and* left the device open, they also states you can switch to Windows as a selling point.
Do we have to expect Valve to not invest in linux gaming anymore because of #2?
I find it illogical, Why the things should change after the first launch?
So, let windows gamers buy the steam deck and let them install windows on it, it will be a good thing for Valve and Linux gaming too.
As for Ubisoft, Big Coorps tend not to see things in deep depth, so if Steam deck will sell enough, probably they would port their games to it, regardless for what users would install on the console.

at this rate they can reach 1 million or 2 quickly.
but the issue is: people will just install windows on it.
i saw it happen before, the gov of my country tried to push linux foward years ago, and people just pirated windows and put on the computers instead.
to be fair we didnt had so many games back then, and many people dont know much about tech to be able to do that or want to learn how to do that if the "out of the box" experience dont suck

Quoting: michaWhile I would love to see Ubisoft releasing new Games on Steam, that sounds really just a like a possibility for the far future. I mean for Ubisoft to consider Steam Deck to be "big" / a success, Valve needs to sell multiple millions, right? Sure it's what we & Gabe hope for. But aren't the all the reservation (not pre-orders!) worldwide more in the quarter million realm (SteamSpy)?there are some leaked numbers that said 110k in just 90 minutes.
Anyway, I'm going through with my Steam Deck reservation and I hope for the best!

Quoting: ahoneybunIt's pretty amazing though not crazy to use Linux for this since I think we have better support when it comes to using the hardware then Windows does since we've been shipping Linux on ARM for years (Thanks Android!).linux was avaliable for tons of architectures since many years ago
