Tomb Raider benchmark video comparison, Linux vs Windows 10

Why is everybody saying that as long as it stays above 60fps it is fine? That is half the Windows performance, i.e. you need twice the GPU horsepower. Just because you happen to have a card that is capable of running TR at 60 frames per second, does not mean everybody does. For every gtx 980ti, there are ten 970s and twenty 960s. And so on. I played this game on my ancient 5770 back in the day and it ran quite decently. Do you think I'll get anything more than a slide show on Linux with whatever was the Nvidia equivalent of that card, in Linux? The number of games is not the problem of Linux anymore - clearly it is an issue that is getting resolved with time. But the performance is abysmal and the vague promise of the bright Vulkan future hardly makes me optimistic.

Tomb Raider tested on R7 370 4G and HD 7970

Quoting: edo
Quoting: theRealPadsterIt was always known for being very well-optimised. The sad thing is, running the same settings on Windows and Linux I get maybe 65-75% of the performance on Linux. :/
On saints row 3 for example, I get around 70% the windows performance on nvidia card, and the same pattern keeps repeating on most of the linux games. I guess is the best we can get from an engine not optimized for opengl.
I'm definitely not an expert, but from what I understand there is a substantial performance loss when going from DirectX to OpenGL as the original engine was built towards DX9 or 11. This is why Arma III for example performs better than a native port - a well optimized wrapper avoids the problem and provides very Windows like gaming experience. Still, TR was pretty decently optimized on Windows, so the performance hit is not a problematic this time.

FPS without gyro is a big no-no for the Steam Controller :).

Feral Interactive release the Linux system requirements for Tomb Raider (updated)

On Windows you could basically run this game on a potato, so I'm quite curious to see how optimized it is for Linux. I'm actually playing it again with a Steam Controller these days and to be honest - three years later the graphics are not that impressive. It's ok, but I guess playing it back to back with the Witcher III is just doing it a disservice :).

Testing The Talos Principle OpenGL vs Vulkan again, now that Valve have fixed the Steam Overlay

Where does the bottleneck come from, though? There is about 20% performance difference between 1080p and 4K which makes zero sense.

Valve shoots down Itch stores attempt to get their client on Steam

Why are some of you genuinely outrages with what Valve did? Try to pull that sh@t at your local store and see what happens. And the uPlay analogy is invalid because it is a form of DRM apart from being a client. The Itch client is optional - it adds literally nothing to your Steam experience besides another layer of complexity.

How to tell what Steam games work on Linux & SteamOS, steamplay does not mean Linux support

I think there is no perfect solution. Enough people might find either confusing. I think the SteamOS logo is the least problematic but I can absolutely see why somebody would think otherwise.

Steam client stable build updated, lots of Steam Controller improvements

I'm generally using the beta client anyway, but it's nice people on the stable release will get all of the cool new features.

Tomb Raider will release for Linux on April 1st (Correction: release date was a glitch)

I'm really curious what the performance will be. On Windows the game was a real champ at hardware scaling. Manged to play it on my good old HD5770 back in the day.
