See how well SteamOS can run Arma 3 against Windows in this new video

Wonder how they managed to do that. Also wonder if they can convince Bethesda to let the port Skyrim :).

Btw, on the matter of companies and their willingness to port to Linux - don't forget executives are quite discouraged to take chances. Imagine you're some big wig at Blizzard or EA and you suddenly decide to funnel resources and people to some minor OS. The shareholder and investors will immediately question your actions and let's be honest - besides your vision and good intentions, you'd hardly have the solid numbers they're used to seeing. I'm not saying: "Oh, those poor 6/7 figure executives", but still, corporate politics are just as tough as real life politics, and just as with real politics - we have have a passionate opinion and an idea what we would do, but just a handful of us really would have what it takes to make that idea happen, given we get into a position of power to make it so. I hope that makes sense :)

Kingdom Come: Deliverance doesn't look like it will come to Linux any time soon

Quoting: berillionsI sent a message to the Community Manager yesterday and I received her answer:

The game is still planned and Warhorse Studio works to resolv the problem.
Guess it is all in the wording. "Technically impossible" at the moment can be read in a multiple ways. I'm guessing performance is a big factor there. I saw some beta footage of CultOfMush plating and the thing ran in the 20s on a 970. Witth he usual 35 to 50% performance hit that would mean a slide show on Linux :). We will see.

Linux 4.5 officially released, with powerplay support under amdgpu

Wish they'd enable support for 1.1 as well (it is technically there, albeit experimental). It's their most used architecture, after all. I still maintain, AMD will half-ass it's way for a couple of more years till they deprecate the GCN 1.0 and 1.1 and just support the newer generations, but hey - maybe they'll prove me wrong.

I usually defend developers for belated/dropped Linux support, but the fact they chose an engine that doesn't support Linux from the get go - d*ck move.

How big is Linux gaming? Some estimates
14 Mar 2016 at 1:47 pm UTC

Quite interesting numbers. Thank you for the effort and time you've put into these stats.
Personally, I think the share is more important than the absolute number, because there is this wrongful assumption a lot of Linux gamers that is there are a million and a half active Linux games on Steam, that means that somehow they will all magically buy each new game and that will somehow make developers prone to porting their game. Xpander's suggestion above makes much more sense, though I think that 3% of sales is still too generous. The most basic and probably accurate assumption is that sales are more or less relative to market share. So that 3% is probably what a Mac port get from the overall game sales. So if we assume it's actually 1% of 200k - you can see why a lot of developers wouldn't bother.
The solution to the problem is Valve giving developers incentive to port for Linux. And help, lots and lots of help.

Arma 3 Linux port to update to 1.54 tomorrow, there's more good news too

Fine, fine - some of you don't like buying Linux games before the final release. It's understandable, but don't act all smug about it, as it's because of the "idiots" who've already bought Arma III and will buy it in the coming months that you'll finally be able to play the game. Anyway, great job VP and keep up the awesome work.

Star Citizen update, they are considering Vulkan
8 Mar 2016 at 11:45 am UTC Likes: 3

I think they're still a bit cautious about performance gains and ease of use. DirectX 12 has more or less an year head start and most developers now have an idea what they're getting into with it, as well as what performance benefits they can reap. Yet, it was just recently that some admitted DX12 turned out to be much harder to implement than expected. In that sense, Vulkan has been available to developers for a much shorter period. The only working example we have at this point is a performance regression in the Talos Principle.
Also, while Vulkan can technically work across all platforms, don't forget most already have their own API. Windows and Xbox have DirectX and Sony have their own close to the metal API for the PS (can't remember the name). It's not like developers will swarm to drop everything and start implementing a new untested and unproven API. Them being cautious is only natural and the truth is Vulkan has to prove itself. Cross platform compatibility is nice but that alone is hardly a selling point. OpenGL is also cross platform :))).

A Linux & Mac version of Stardew Valley depends on sales from Windows to happen

Quoting: ElectricPrism"Depending on sales of the game, there will be version for both MAC and Linus"

Lets see hmm....

135,090 as of March 3rd x 14.99 is a sales income of erm..... $2,024,999.10

Yup, 2 Million 24 Thousand Dollars.

Linux & Mac version confirmed! Thanks Bexy!
And don't forget - multiplayer is not available yet. I predict things will go bonkers once that up, as well.

A Linux & Mac version of Stardew Valley depends on sales from Windows to happen
3 Mar 2016 at 1:09 pm UTC

Quoting: lucifertdarkHave you forgotten Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams? they promised a Linux version, 2 years later they've just pretty much walked away, I'm tired of developers treating Linux as an afterthought or just walking away after us Linux gamers have been conned into giving them money for nothing, if you're not going to support Linux from day one don't promise it at all.
So what is the developer of Stardew Valley supposed to reply when asked about a Linux/Mac port? Ignore the question? Lie and say: "No, never happening"? Swear on his children's life he'll port it no matter what? I'm confused.
