As somebody pointed out recently - there is a reason the Unigine benchmarks run so well on AMD cards in Linux but games don't. The benchmarks have to be completely OpenGL compliant in order to provide accurate results. And guess what - when the code is clean AMD performs very good. It's funny because Nvidia users don't realize that if devs/porters wrote OpenGL compliant code they'd get better performance, as well - much closer to Windows as opposed to the current 30 to 50% gaps.
I'm not exonerating AMD in any way - they should be more flexible with their drivers considering the situation and support messier solutions. However, the real blame lies with developers who go the quick and dirty route instead of writing clean code, which results in unplayable performance in on AMD and Intel and nerfed on Nvidia.
I'm quite shocked nobody talks about that problem, because it's probably the most serious one regarding Linux gaming IMO. No amount of driver fixes and next-gen APIs will bring Windows level of gaming performance to Linux unless the developers do their job the right way. Vulkan will be like a Ferrari - unless you know how to drive it, you'll most likely fly of the road at the first turn.

If he'd said that, he'd have gotten a ton of sympathy and offers of help. But no, he's only saying that now after several months, if not years, taking the absolute piss out of Linux while making money by offering utterly appalling Linux versions of his Windows games.

Glad to see he's wising up, actually. I'd rather he stick with that attitude - take the SteamOS logo off Garry's Mod and Rust until he's willing to offer the same quality on those titles that Windows users enjoy. But I doubt it. He's only talking about future titles here, so G-Mod and Rust will continue to be sold as a supported platform, yet continue to play second class citizen.

While, I haven't started Rust in a long time (real waste of 20 euro that was), but last time I did it ran pretty terrible at my then single 290x in Windows. So there's that, though maybe they fixed the Windows version subsequently.

Except for all people with lower and or older hardware. Why are all deniers acting like everybody has a 970 or better GPU. I've a pair of 290x - trust me, I notice the performance difference quite well. I'm pretty sure anybody with a 2 gig 960 would be like WTF when his game starts running at 40 instead of 60+ frames.

I can't tell you how it's running just yet, as it's not gonna be here til Black Friday at the earliest, but I wound up with the Steam Machine P, i5 4460, 1 TB HDD, 8 gb RAM, and a 970 for ~$650. And I want to run Linux - that's why I'm here, I was googling linux gaming info - but I don't want to see performance take a hit because of it. I'm going to run SteamOS for a little while at least, just to see what it's like, but if I notice any issues I'll at least dual boot. In the event of widespread Linux gaming support I'll definitely make the switch, which is entirely possible if Valve pushes hard enough IMO.
(also do y'all think I should go with Cinnamon Mint instead of SteamOS or what)

Wow, that's a pretty sweet deal, considering a 970 is half of the entire price bought separately. And yeah - you should probably dual boot. Most of the guys here tend to be a bit overzealous when it comes to Linux, but if you really want the full gaming in the living room experience you want to be able to play Windows games as well.

I genuinely think a lot of people will put Windows on, the second they realize Fallout 4 and GTA V don't work in Linux. Other than that it's an absolutely great offer for pre-built PCs.
