Quoting: throghThere are hundreds of videos about Minecraft, where are the ones about Minetest for example?Minetest is just that. It has no actual content or point. Don't get me wrong, I like Minetest. The performance compared to Minecraft is unbelievable. Open-source games in general are awesome. But let's face it, very few artist like the concept and most programmers have little artistic skill. So you end up with games that run well, but look terrible, or just have no depth. Frogatto is a fantastic exception, and there are a few others, but much like indie games can't compare to real triple-a games in sheer scale and polish, most completely open games are little more than working prototypes.[/quote]Your opinion, but there are very good modifications and addons for Minetest making the game running great. And what about games like 0 A.D. looking awesome for example? Let's face it: The price is just to high making Linux just to another Windows, even with the same rules nowadays.

Quoting: ZekThePenguinThis looks amazing! It's great that Linux has so many fantastic platformers! There are onlinegames on Linux. Why do you want turning a system based on freedom to a clone of Windows? That would be the ending of "Then we'd be good!" ... it will never be good or enough and there will be ever some reason for people to deny using Linux. So borders will be more weakened, because the system itself is not that much attractive. But where are the presentations of the strong, open-source games? There are hundreds of videos about Minecraft, where are the ones about Minetest for example? There are enough closed-source games to choose and personal I don't want another Windows-copy. :)
(Cave Story, Frogatto, Shovel Knight, Rogue Legacy, Freedom Planet, Axiom Verge, Volgarr the Viking, and more!!!)
Now all we need is a decent MMO and some sports titles (damn EA and its sports monopoly!). Then we'd be good!

Quoting: BTRETo be honest: I don't really it's a problem about GOG. Besides personal opinion that any third party client is absolutely unnecessary! The problem is: Most companies give nothing about Linux or just take it as some kind of "bonus" through porting to a BSD-derivate like the Playstation. Until today no further port like "Knights of the Old Republic" didn't even made it to GOG. The game itself is available. Why? The answer is very easy: Because the port has other owners and they just don't care about DRM-free builds because Steam as proprietary platform is more interesting! Everybody can decide if this is valuable or not, for me this is not valuable and I don't give anything about Steam or any further client! :)Quoting: GuestThe day steam removes a game i own is the last day i ever buy a geme from steam, gog all the way...It's no longer for sale at any online shop, GOG included. And, as much as I want to like GOG the fact that Galaxy isn't out on Linux yet, their subpar communication generally and a few other things make me think they don't care much about Linux users at all. I'd rather get DRM-free games from the humble store if I had to.
Looks like the beautiful open source RTS '0 A.D.' is closing in on the next release, Alpha 21

Quoting: valguskThat's easy to answer but just also my perspective: When accepting all the modern rules and so-called standards I turn my installation of Linux in nothing more but another Windows. DLC? DRM? Microtransactions? Blobbed drivers and protected software within repositories? That's ruining the games and Linux at all, making especially the games to nothing more but a nice looking demo. And the forced online connections turns the fun in nothing more than an amusement park where I have to pay for every step, even watching an attraction costs money. Even not to mention that modern hardware is the opposite of freedom - UEFI anyone, protected firmware on NVidia-cards. So better to stay at old games for me, following up principles: DRM? Not with me! :) Otherwise the so-called "battle" is lost before it even has begun already!Quoting: throghThis will be another DRM-release on Steam, so no chance to buy this one for me. :)I agree that everybody has their principles, but Linux users are so good at their pickiness that it makes me wonder why devs even bother trying to port their games. DRM, microtransations, paid DLC, ...
Not only we are less in numbers, but 7bigger part of us reject purchases too easily. I don't like these problems either, but I will always buy a great game made for Linux even when devs can see the community hostility that clearly. DRM? Their right, people do pirate games too much. Microtransactions? Just don't buy them, thats the best way to battle them. Paid dlc? You are offered something that was rejected from original games most likely due to lack of time/money - profits like these are better than making the game 1.5x more expensive and you don't have to buy them either.
Why not just buy games we want to play for now until Linux is stable as a dev choice and then battle secondary wars?

Hmm, what? Dongled software with proprietary DRM-platform again? Ah, thanks, but no! :)
Won't begging or hoping for anything else and it would be a surprise this would be also released complete DRM-free. They could keep that software and I wonder as always so many here are "hoping this will happen". As always this will ruin freedom a little bit more on Linux and make another Windows / Mac out of it.

A reason for poor performance on AMD plus Mesa has been found and a patch is in progress

Quoting: babaiI Agree that customers should expect proper performance right now and not wait for another year, also this fix will probably go into the radeonSI userspace driver and not MESA.No neither AMD nor NVidia means really freedom and even the implementation within Mesa have to use a firmware-file (blobs), which is not open, free or libre at all. Everything else around? Okay, but the firmware-image has to be used. Therefore also the libre kernel cannot allocate newer cards for the blobs are removed - better to say their allocation is completely removed and even if they are existent nothing happens. And turns out being much work deblobbing the driver! So this is not free or libre.
Still, AMD has contributed much code to MESA in the past years, show me some from NVIDIA (no please not any Tegra DRM code)?
If you are using Linux for freedom/open source idealism, ideologically you SHOULD buy AMD products and not tell me how a 1060 overpowers an RX480 today. AMD had no obligations towards supporting MESA or opening up millions of lines of DPM code for their chips. They still did.
Support a company that supports your platform.
If you don't follow the open source philosophy and using Linux just because you like say the millions of widget themes it supports or for any other reason, buy Nvidia.

Quoting: Avehicle7887Just had a look on GOG and my library: No Linux-version and GOG removed the Linux-version as always. Comments from support? As always they cannot say when or even if a version for another platform will be released. Look on Humblebundle? The version arrived. :)Quoting: MyeulCThat's awesome news, so finally Fez will get the Linux version on GOG. Keep em coming!Quoting: Guesthttps://twitter.com/renaudbedard/status/767080954573783044 [External Link]Quoting: Avehicle7887Hopefully they'll also release the update for the DRM-Free version on Humble Bundle, otherwise I won't be able to enjoy this update at all.Same hope here (so far it's not updated). As I understand FNA is not tied to steam (?), so there should be some hope, even more as it's also on GOG :)
. @flibitijibibo and I just sent Windows, OS X and Linux builds to GOG and Humble for FEZ 1.12. Coming live in the near future!

Simply as that: SteamOS is NOT GNU/Linux and that is made clear by this. Who in fact can prevent Valve from changing this derivate so it is more incompatible with the general Linux-stack? Exactly: Nobody. Just using the kernel and some firmware and what about the rest? Just more proprietary software and addons doesn't bring Open-Source more clear in the foreground, but I like those discussions here ... when some people are crying out because they don't get the game to make Linux more shiny one day and in fact it is nothing more than a copy of Windows on their local system. :D
It will be relativized repeatedly, I know. But using proprietary software with DRM is just an option and possibility, nothing more. It doesn't help Linux in any way.
