The Steam Deck hit me over the head with feelings of nostalgia
5 Apr 2022 at 7:28 pm UTC

My experience is the opposite of Liam’s. I grew up with computers, always seated at a desk. My first console was in 2001, followed by a number of handhelds from Sony and Nintendo. I can no longer play at a desk, a couch+TV or a handheld all the way. I’m really hoping the SD will help me with my huuuge PC backlog.

The REAL question here is should we (as a species) cater to the least knowledgeable individuals or work to increase general knowledge? The former certainly makes it easier to govern.

GOG suspends all sales in Russia and Belarus

Yeah, I don’t agree with gog here. They should keep selling the games and donate all proceeds they make from those sales to Ukraine. And put up a big banner telling their Russian costumers they’re doing it, let them vote with their wallets.

Steam Deck gets an OS update to help solve stick drift

I’d rather open up the SD and replace the stick than “just grab” a very expensive switch controller that’ll have the same problem after a while ;-) And I’m saying that as someone who has paid for new Switch controllers and who also has successfully opened them up to fix the drift.

Still, good news it’s just a software issue, those usually are much easier to fix. And Valve definitely need stricter testing standards.

Not in a position to support Linux?

They make it sound like it's some kind of huge expense or hassle.

CitySlicker is an upcoming high-end case for the Steam Deck

Quoting: damarrinWell, the SD comes with a case so it's a case of not being satisfied with that and looking around for something else.

I have 2 cases from Waterfield and they're very nice. I wish I'd got their PSVita case as well, they no longer make that, unfortunately. :-(
Heh, and just like that they brought back the Vita case for a week on account of its 10th anniversary. Lucky me, getting to spend more money.

...and then do it all over again whenever there's a new major release of Proton.
Well, they shouldn't need to. New Proton versions shouldn't break any games, at all, as each update is supposed to be expanding and improving the translation. The reality is different of course but the other side is also that games can be set to specific Proton versions so they will likely do that for a number of games. It *should* technically get to a point where breakage isn't an issue, and if it is there will be a point where breakage in Proton / Wine is breakage on Windows. There's a lot of points to think on.
Verified games should be kept on the Proton version they were verified with. The only case Proton should be updated for those is if the game gets patched and it no longer works.

Or perhaps when Linux gets updated so much a given Proton version no longer works period, but that should be rather rare.

Newer versions of Proton have and will break games that used to work before.
