Valve & HTC launch the Vive VR device, without Linux & SteamOS support
7 Apr 2016 at 4:44 am UTC

Quoting: psyminI tried HTC Vive out last night on Gentoo and Ubuntu. SteamVR wouldn't function for me.
Everyone knows the SteamVR compositor isn't ready yet, but as a developer I'm more interested if the headset and controller tracking via. OpenVR works...

Oculus Rift has some shady stuff in their terms & privacy policy
4 Apr 2016 at 4:45 pm UTC

Quoting: GoboAs far as I know there is no official support for Linux (or SteamOS) yet.
Valve has confirmed that they are working on it [External Link] and there's activity on OpenVR for Linux [External Link] but I wouldn't hold my breath with how hectic the Vive launch is looking...

Nvidia 364.12 released for Linux with official Vulkan, Mir & Wayland support

Quoting: zebIs this still valid for this new driver? The new version should have fixed this issue, plus the XCOM 2 regression. I have not tried it yet.
I didn't see a fix mentioned in the changelog, feel free to test it and correct me if it's no longer necessary as I'm posting from my phone. I was using that work-around for Team Fortress 2...

See this impressive Unreal Engine 4 video showcasing 2016 features, official Vulkan support

I was evaluating engines yesterday and found myself a bit underwhelmed with UE4, at least for my purposes it's a massively complex codebase that had tons of features I didn't need and the performance wasn't great for the art style I needed. I opted to build my own engine and just picked up a rendering library that would play nice with custom shaders...

Some thoughts on Factorio after a few hours with it, blown away by it

Great game, it's mostly just lacking end-game content and the combat is still a bit shallow. That's probably the main reason for its early access status, the actual factory building side of it is top-notch and makes it well worth the purchase. You'll get through a few really lengthy playthroughs before you notice the lack of end-game.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc now available on Linux & SteamOS

Quoting: ArehandoroI liked the anime and games like Phoenix Wright are great, so probably will buy it soonish.
According to reviews the story is the same as the anime.

Looks like Dota 2 with Vulkan isn't too far away

Quoting: tuubiThis also highlights the fact that although Croteam's code might be slow right now, Nvidia's Vulkan driver is unlikely to be well optimized at this point either. I guess it's pretty hard to optimize a driver until there are real world apps/games using the API to test with. Isolated, synthetic tests are unlikely to reflect real world use cases. I'm sure all the big IHV's will get there eventually, and relatively quickly due to Vulkan's design.
I don't think we can really assume that the driver is responsible for the performance issues, especially since Vulkan moves a lot of that responsibility out of the driver. Hell it might not even be the game engine, for all we know the shader compiler could be affecting the performance too. There's no point in pinning the blame on anyone at this point because nearly every part of the pipeline is still rough around the edges and there's still a lot of work to be done.

That Dragon, Cancer is now doing a Linux release on Steam

Quoting: GuestIt was their fault - they admitted as much. The Steam release may have been an innocent assumption on their part, but there's no reason they had to delay building & testing the GNU/Linux version for a DRM-free release.
It wasn't an assumption since their previous management did actually define the Steam Machines as a console, they just forgot to clarify it with their new management after they changed hands.
