Are the battlefields all procedurally generated as well? The repetition of the various battlefields in Tower of Time eventually wore me down, and I stopped playing because the battles all became too samey. If not, then I might be able to get into a bit of stomping around brown and beige landscapes bashing foes on the noodle.

That looks alot like our old Micron PC, Hamish. Of course, everything looked like our old Micron back then: big beige and boxy. It came from Micron with Windows ME installed from the factory. It was around $2,000. It's still tucked away behind the couch, waiting for the fembot uprising.

My first Linux box was a Dell Inspiron running Win '98 from the same era, gifted to me by a co-worker when her son went off to Military school. Back in the early aughts I could still get old computers for free from the recycling center, and that Dell became a Frankenstein of experimentation and distros. Eventually I settled on AntiX with a Fluxbox desktop. I still have a picture:

Y'know? I feel almost an uncle's pride about this --- just because I loved this game way back when it was a little itch in its parents io. Maybe it's because its been a Linux title since the very beginning ... I feel like its "one of ours," and it's gone into the world and "done good."

Sigh. I still have screen shots of the itch version. It was so darn cute.

LinuxGSM is just a tool you use to automate self-hosting wherever you want.

What threw me was your use of the word 'cheaply' where you wrote, '...interested in hosting your own cheaply ...', since cheaply means that it costs money, just not very much money. What were you referring to?

There is nothing friendly about google. Behind their clown colors skulks a very wealthy --- and very powerful --- data-mining concern. Whatever they do, they do to collect and collate and profit from people's data. I've only ever used their search engine, and that stopped in 2004 when I first found Scroogle [External Link].

Anecdotes and articles like Liam's here are why I've been working for the past month or so climbing a steep learning curve setting up my first smart phone (yes, really), an old Note 4 given me by my father-in-law.

I've hidden all of the google, Samsung, and Verizon software that I couldn't remove or disable, and installed replacement goodies from F-droid [External Link], including using the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser [External Link], Bitwarden [External Link] password manager, and Tutamail [External Link] (because they have a desktop client).

Whatever exclusively-Play Store app I want (Steam's app, for example), I'll get via Aurora Store [External Link], an anonymizing Play Store client. I'm currently looking into which smart phone I'll buy to be my daily driver based upon which custom ROM I can use; LineageOS [External Link] or Resurrection Remix [External Link] being the most likely options).

I feel for Sprinks, I really do. His ordeal is one of my worst nightmares. I can never forget that everything digital is as ephemeral a soap-bubble.
