Opinion: Can Linux Be A Viable Gaming Platform? Thoughts From A Sympathetic Game Developer
6 Jul 2015 at 8:56 pm UTC Likes: 5

Quoting: throghFrom my point of view a game developed only for "Ubuntu" or "SteamOS" is not the way to go. In fact it is no problem at all to release a working application for more than only one or two platforms. So the user should be capable of knowledge about the platform he / she is using. Only some basic knowledge and the motivation to ask questions at the right places, also having some basic interest about finding information on their own at a concrete point. There is no need for some kind of standardization or certification. What do you want to reach? Another Microsoft, this time only with the penguin on it? No thanks!

For me Linux and Open-Source is about the freedom to choose and not to be regulated by another ruleset and the dictate of some companies / groups which say this has to be the way of some kind of standard.
I don't think that the author is suggesting that Linux as a whole be regulated, or that the "SteamOS version" should only run on SteamOS. The way I read it, is that devs openly say what they tested on, and then you can run it on whatever you want, but there may be issues that didn't show up in the testing. So it's exactly what you say: the user should know the platform they are using. And having SteamOS as a general test OS is not a bad idea, makes it easier than everybody testing on something different. And considering that (pre-built, pre-installed) Steam Machines are largely aimed at people who don't care about OSs and just want to play games without a hassle, it makes sense to pick SteamOS as the default.

Victor Vran Release Date Announced, Going To Be Awesome

I'm impressed that this is Early Access, runs really well so far (I've only played about 45 min)

Quoting: coolboberI'm playing it quite a lot already. Nice game so far. Controller support is great!

Only one problem I have with dual screen. On my TV game don't want to start, but on laptop display works great. I found workaround. To start game in window - then it works on TV as well.
Works for me on a desktop with monitor and TV connected. I put steam on the TV, went into Big Picture mode (fullscreen on TV), and started the game. Came up fullscreen on the TV.
I played with Dualshock4, works without issues, though button prompts are for xbox controller. Not sure if I prefer controller or kb&m for this. But the comfy couch gaming is definitely a plus!

ARK: Survival Evolved Released For Linux, Here's An Early Look & Thoughts
2 Jul 2015 at 2:43 am UTC

Runs OK. I started with settings on high, but then lowered them to medium. Frame rates above 50fps (1080p) for the most part; I actually stopped checking the frame rate, it was running smoothly enough for me to forget about it. Though with my hardware I would expect more, I'm running a 4790k at 4.6 GHz, and a GTX 980ti (at about 1400 MHz), plus 16 GB of RAM. The game doesn't look that great, I would have expected to play it with most settings on high and still get smooth frame rates. I might play around with some of the settings tomorrow.

SteamVR Headset From HTC To Release Windows Only First

Disappointing if true. Could this be some kind of misunderstanding? I thought the Vive worked with SteamVR, which is on Linux. Maybe he was talking about specific games?

Edit: I did some searching, and it might be more of an issue with engine plugins. The SteamVR plugins for Unity and Unreal currently don't support Linux (for Unity: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/# [External Link]!/content/32647).

Alienware Show Off Their SteamOS Steam Machine, Looking Very Positive, More Games To Come

I'm torn between hype and disbelieve. 'over the summer' sounds like very soon, so wouldn't we have heard something at least about some of them? Unless the AAA games he's talking about are Shadow of Mordor and Batman, which isn't bad, but not really 'a lot'.

GOG Treat Linux To More Old Gems, Blood: One Unit Whole Blood FPS Now Available
19 May 2015 at 1:27 pm UTC

Quoting: CybaCowboyIn an attempt to "grab headlines", GOG.com made such a big song-and-dance about supporting Linux-based operating systems a while back... And yeah, they hit the 100 games they claimed they would offer.

But the trickle of games since has been just that - a trickle.

I had high hope of GOG.com, considering I've been a happy customer since the start... But I take their claims of enthusiasm for Linux-based operating systems with a grain of salt.
It's not that bad, they had ~170 Linux games in January, and have about ~260 now (some of those 'games' are special edition upgrades, but I didn't want to go through and count them individually). That's 90 games in 5 month. More than 20% of their catalogue is on Linux.
My main gripe is that there are a number of games that have Linux versions on Steam but not on GOG. But in many cases, there doesn't seem to be much GOG can do. For example, I think Age of Wonders 3 developers (Triumph) said that managing different builds on GOG isn't currently feasible for them.

Divinity: The Original Sin Enhanced Edition Announced, No Linux Release Date
17 May 2015 at 4:15 pm UTC

Quoting: liamdaweAnd how long have we waited already to find out the original is not coming, but the newer one is? You can then argue we are getting a fuller game, but how long do we have to wait, again? What if it never comes?
Apart from the wait, I'm also wondering if the 'fuller' game will necessarily be the better game. I know they said they'll have 2 separate UIs that you can switch between depending on whether you play with kb&m or controller. But they might still have to make compromises on some gameplay mechanics to make it at all playable with a controller. I don't know if they have said anything about that, about if or how they are going to change the gameplay; I may have missed that. So if anyone knows anything, please correct me on this.

Divinity: The Original Sin Enhanced Edition Announced, No Linux Release Date
16 May 2015 at 7:50 pm UTC

Quoting: edqeMaybe I'm just too used how people behave in work life - people discuss about the problems and get them solved. Sure, Internet works differently, I just forget it time to time :)
That doesn't really apply to this situation though. Larian accepted money from people because they promised a Linux version, which, as of now, they haven't delivered. There is nothing the people who gave money can do, they can't discuss the problem with Larian to solve it, because in the end, Larian decide on their priorities and do what they think is best. Complaining is pretty much the only thing people can do (other than just not saying anything and accepting things as they are), and Larian can then decide whether they want to reply or not.

Quoting: edqeI think the communication could have been better for sure. There are plenty of examples of bad communication. Just see what kind of drama is going around The Witcher 3 at the moment. Things could have been much easier for CDPR with good communication.
Don't remind me, I start crying every time I see or hear anything Witcher 3 related.

Quoting: edqeWhat could Larian do / could have done differently? If they never had a version that works on Linux how could they release it.
They could have not promised something they couldn't deliver. Or, if they promised it and then noticed it'll take longer, they could have made keeping their promise a priority over working on other things. Also, they could have communicated better, made clearer right from the start that Linux support would be tough and has an unknown timeline.

Quoting: edqeThey have been working Linux version for a sometime already and going to deliver it along with the other platform once Enhanced version is ready. I just don't see how bashing them solve any problems or make the release happen any earlier.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that bashing anyone is a solution for anything. But I think it's perfectly justified to speak up and complain when someone is treating you poorly.

Quoting: edqeUnfortunately Linux is still quite far from being one of most important platforms. Oculus Rift, D: OS, Trine 3, etc. waiting, waiting and more waiting.
To be honest, I'm surprised that so many developers even bother making Linux versions at all, so for the most part, I don't mind waiting, I'm just glad to get the games at all. What I do mind though is when developers/publishers aren't forthright about the Linux version. Like Larian with D: OS, or like you pointed out, CDPR with Witcher 3 *cries again*.
