Well yeah, that's how, was far as I know, almost every industry works... On credit.

When I worked in construction, our company owner would joke "The entire industry would freeze if any one actually tried to collect their bills!!"

Even small business do the same. A deli owner friend of mine remarked how he didn't turn a profit for his first 5 years and how that was the average for his industry/region. That's 5 years with everything on credit and even if he did make some profit, the debt is still there.

I'm some cases, paying off debts is considered a waste of money as you get higher yields investing that money vs the savings from paying early (or at all), especially in during our past decade where interest rates were low.

Of course, that can bite people and companies when expected investments fall apart, as it seems to have done here.

Lovely capitalism.

People being irresponsible with finances (and, yes, taking out huge loans that you can't easily repay is irresponsible) is not a feature of capitalism.

The bad news is that Proton will never run all games, because it's not Windows.
Invasive anti-cheat in games prevent them from running under Proton, and this will never change.

The problem is that without Proton, developers had two choices: 1) Support Linux natively; or 2) Don't support Linux at all. Before Proton, the overwhelming majority of developers chose door number 2. I suppose you could argue that they're still choosing door number 2, but fortunately, it doesn't matter, because we can still play their games.

Like it or not, Proton (or similar) is the future of Linux gaming, because I don't see Windows ever getting dislodged from its dominant position in the desktop operating system market.

I hardly use the joysticks on my Steam Deck. I find the touchpads to be superior input devices.

I guess system-breaking updates is something that happens if you're, I dunno, not using Mint?

The last time I had to deal with frequent system breaking updates in Linux was around 20 years ago when I was using Gentoo. I got tired of dealing with it so started using Kubuntu which just worked. Switched to Manjora a couple years ago because I wanted something that stayed more up to date. It just works, too.

Also sounds like another step towards project walled garden. This is your system? This is our System! And we will remove the pesky choice of not using our in house container distribution system. Meaning developers will be more inclined to prioritize snap support over other packaging and so over time will the user-base. Let's face it: there is no home desktop user advantage compared to a well put together distro here in fact there is the potential for quite a lot of frustration like in chrome os or android when people with small problems or needs that should be easily solvable run into artificial brick walls placed there fore the cryptic promise of 'more security and stability'.There seems to be corporate interest though. One wonders why...
'But...think of the children!'- Yeah, I am. I'd rather see them explore and get their hands dirty and their clothes torn, once in a while, out in the open, then in a fenced and allegedly sanitized Playground in front of Corporate building.
Who knows? I may be proven wrong...;-)

I guess I don't understand how an immutable distro is significantly different in terms of security and stability from the current way of doing it with a locked root account. Aren't they basically different paths to the same end?
