The free to play MMO 'Tale of Toast' has launched, with some major scaling issues
27 Feb 2018 at 7:15 pm UTC

On the topic of MMORPGs, I have been trying to enjoy one called Ryzom though it ultimately feels like a chore simulator. And playing with others vs alone doesn't seem to change that. Either I have been spoiled by this decade's open world games or the MMO concept itself just hasn't aged well. MMORPG developers need to simplify simplify simplify.

Vulkan can now run on Mac as MoltenVK is now open source

Quoting: lejimsterWhen Vulkan was originally announced I was really happy to see it come to Apple and Linux. With Apple Mac having a larger market share (gamer wise) as of right now, it seemed a great thing. Then they had to go their own way with Metal. I just don't understand the thinking, they have made it harder to bring more games to their platform and potentially set Vulkan adoption back at the same time.

So this is a good development, and I hope porters/developers just target Vulkan from now on and ignore Metal as much as possible. I wonder what Feral think of this, since they have been working on bringing titles to Apple with Metal support.
Their goal: exert greater control over the users, procure yet more lock-in. It's all about putting up artificial barriers.

Edit: Place your bets now, how long do you think it will be before Apple changes the Metal API in such a way as to conveniently break MoltenVK?

Quoting: [email protected]Omg, that's game is what I was looking for since Sonic all star racing transformer doesn't have a Linus version.
For some reason I often (falsely) remember Sonic and sega all stars Racing Tranformed as being available on Linux but that is probably only because it was one of the last games I played before liberating all of my main systems. It is of course a miracle at all that Sega are releasing games to the PC platform in any capacity. Baby steps I guess.

Classic F-Zero maybe, since everything here stays upright.

It's been sitting out in the open on GOG's forums for ages but I guess everyone there has it by now.[/users-only]

Quoting: GustyGhostDo your scripts remain entirely contained? i.e. WINE does not take a giant shit on the filesystem/DE settings/libraries?
They are prevented from polluting the system's menus and linking the user directories ("My Documents" etc) over, and nothing is installed system-wide by them. You can even put them on a USB drive or so and run them from that (which I often do when testing them on my other systems).

Quoting: GustyGhostEven still, the only way I would try a community WINE wrap is if said game is absolutely gratis. I don't want any money going to tyrant developers.
"Tyrant developers"? I hope you don't tolerate the use of DRM either, as that's *way* more "tyrannical" behavior...

Anyway there are tons of great games that will never see a native Linux release & would be a shame to miss out on. My approach is to only buy Windows games that are old & deeply discounted/cheap enough that a Linux port is likely to never happen and only if they're DRM-free. Full/high price purchase = must support Linux + DRM-free[
I generally do not tolerate any DRM whatsoever. My main games atm are actually fully open source. Shy of that, they must at the very least be Linux native + free of DRM. By tyrant I mean any developer who expects their customers to use a proprietary platform.

I really like the idea of putting WINE wraps on a USB drive. Not only are they contained but portable ^_^ .

Reposting here as it's still relevant (and I updated all of my wrappers recently):

Older/classic games currently on sale on GOG that I've made Wine wrappers [External Link] for:

Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition [External Link]
Freedom Force [External Link]
Freedom Force vs the Third Reich [External Link]
Hitman: Codename 47 [External Link]
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin [External Link]
Hitman 3: Contracts [External Link]
Jade Empire: Special Edition [External Link]
Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Collection [External Link]
Mafia [External Link]
Mirror's Edge [External Link]

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The Complete Edition [External Link]
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl [External Link] (flash deal)

The flash deals seem to be repeating fairly regularly so if you want Deus Ex or STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl you probably won't have to wait too long before they show up again

Islands of Nyne is one Battle Royale game that might get a Linux version in future

- New studio

- No history of previous Linux work

- Developement through Windows [External Link]

- Huge emphasis on dramatic trailers, visuals and art (ask me about "ARK syndrome"\)

- Equates platform "Windows" to "PC"

Unfortunately, boys, it looks like the chances of this releasing to Linux are extremely low.

Just got the game, and it's barely working. It says "press interact to talk". I'm pressing F. Nothing happens. No idea how to get into the ship even.

UPDATE: It suddenly reacted on F. Digitally generated voice is a cool option to save on voice acting :) Still no idea how to enter the spaceship.

UPDATE2: Apparently you need to buy a ship first, and I think I found it outside the hangar. But then the character got stuck, and I exited the game and started it back. The ship wasn't there anymore.

UPDATE3: The ship appeared back, but there is no apparent way to enter it. This game is seriously pre-alpha :)
Often, the character's selection box is offset. The same for mining equipment. And to get your ship, it should be in the ships tab of your "I" menu, look for "request ship". You then place it manually. After that, the rear door will open when you approach it. It sounds like you've been trying to enter the NPC ships.

I can't fault anything for being this way seeing as <90% of the games on Itch are flagged "in development".
