Playtron wanted to take on Windows and SteamOS with their GameOS, now they're announcing a cryptocurrency

Too bad this crypto thingy is casting a shadow on the distro itself, because is pretty good. There;s some interesting stuff in there.

No one year Epic exclusivity like for Phoenix Point?

Happy three years to the Steam Deck - the Linux gaming machine that changed everything

Three years already, but I only got one few days ago. Didn't thought I needed one and didn't bought into the hype, FOMO and all that.
But gotta say the hype was right, Is a fantastic device:)

SteamOS-like Bazzite Linux has some nice growth thanks to great handheld PC support

Perhaps a silly question but could Bazzite be a good replacement for SteamOS on a Steam Deck?
Does it do anything better?
Not a silly question at all, experimentation is fun, but honestly I'd still stick with Valve's system.
If you think/hope that just a recent kernel/driver will make a significant improvement in performance you could always switch to the "Main" channel updates, where they have more recent ones. But besides, even since the times of SteamOS 1/2, Valve always carefully patched their releases with whatever was needed for performance and security, so don't get discouraged just because you see they still use "ancient" kernels. Steam Deck is their baby/hardware, I'll bet you that they take good care of it.
As for extra features or improvements not officially present/preinstalled there's always Decky Loader with a trove of goodies.
Where Bazzite shines is general hardware support, hardware that Valve doesn't support (for now).

Steam Controller 2 is apparently a thing and being 'tooled for a mass production' plus a new VR controller

Quoting: StellaWhile the Steam Controller 1 is a great concept, its execution is severely lacking.

it honestly feels really cheap, the shoulder buttons feel like they could come off any minute and both the shoulders and the touchpads require an overwhelming amount of force to be pressed. that also produces a very loud clicking noise. the vibration on it's also really terrible compared to any other controller, it's more a whiny sound with a little bit of feedback than vibration. The face buttons are too small, hard to find when you're not looking, and have a mushy feel. I find myself constantly looking at it in my hands because my muscle memory just can't find the buttons...
It's a shame honestly because i wanted to like this controller. i feel like it'd work great for games that don't need precise aiming. But no matter what, I just keep coming back to the Dualshock 4 which is superior in almost every way.
I totally agree with that, it basically suck and is not worth it. Just useless.
Can you send it to me please?

Fan-made Half-Life 2 Episode 3 demo arrives with Project Borealis: Prologue now on Steam

While I'm disappointed with their choice of UE instead of Source, I must say that it does feel and look like Source (pretty much felt like Black Mesa) at least on the medium/low settings that I've used. Identical, no, but one minute in and I forgot is made in UE, sensation enforced by their evident efforts to mimic everything Source, gun-play, movements, physics, hud, sounds and even the menus.
Curious about future developments in terms of story, which from what I remember is inspired by Marc Laidlaw's Epistle Three. I understand that there are some controversies around it (even the author regretted writing it), but I believe it still has value for Half Life universe.

Check out Proton-Sarek if you have an older GPU for Windows games on Linux

Quoting: StellaThat's cool, but i'm wondering how much 'older' does a gpu need to be to not support Vulkan 1.3?
For AMD, it seems to be from GCN 3.0 and earlier; GCN 4.0+ supports Vulkan 1.3. In AMD's case, it's cards from around 2015 and earlier that are stuck on Vulkan 1.2.
IIRC all AMD GPUs since GCN support Vulkan 1.3 through RADV.

Internet Archive hit with DDoS attacks and hacked with 31 million accounts hit

Quoting: pbI just wonder why did 31 million people need an account on archive.org. Genuinely wonder, because I've been using it (occasionally) for 25 years and never needed an account.
You'll need it to upload files to them.

Square Enix invests in Playtron for their Linux-based PlaytronOS - first Alpha out now

Quoting: dubigrasuDon't know about SteamFork (it just displays a blank screen, maybe because I have a Polaris card?) but compared with the rest, I think they're going for extreme minimalism, think something like Batocera maybe.
Batocera isn't minimal, it's pretty heavy.
Yeah sorry, I probably remembered it wrong, but in any case I've meant the unified tiles interface.

Quoting: dubigrasuI was also impressed how it automatically converted/sent 5.1 surround sound through optical cable, something that I always had to tweak around, no matter the distro.
This is a trivial thing to do, just need to check the capabilities of the connected device and match against a list of optimal profiles.
It is trivial, ( even more these days) but none of the distros I tried did it out of the box without my intervention. And that was fortunate with PlaytronOS, since like I said, is a sort of a black box.
(though you can still drop to tty and do some magic)

Square Enix invests in Playtron for their Linux-based PlaytronOS - first Alpha out now

Quoting: GuestBetween SteamFork [External Link], Bazzite [External Link], ChimeraOS [External Link], and all of the other open source gaming distributions out there, what will this one do differently?
Don't know about SteamFork (it just displays a blank screen, maybe because I have a Polaris card?) but compared with the rest, I think they're going for extreme minimalism, think something like Batocera maybe.
That if the current alpha is to believed, so likely is a bit premature to form a definitive opinion.
Other than linking your Playtron account to Steam/whatever and some minimal settings, there's nothing much else to do, no tweaking no nothing, just simple tiles to click install on, and play. If there's some minimal tweak/launch option that can make your game playable, you cannot do it, is only up to them to fix it. Again, maybe too early to tell.
I can't see many people going for this approach, but I suspect will make a niche of users very happy, especially on handhelds. It seems to work OK so far, every game I tried installed and played with no hiccups, and overall is a very seamless experience. I was also impressed how it automatically converted/sent 5.1 surround sound through optical cable, something that I always had to tweak around, no matter the distro.
