Quoting: GuestUseful info! Thanks!Quoting: muhgoWhat happens if you're on iOS and install the Beta over your existing installation? Will this clear the 2FA data? Because I don't want to be locked-out of my account.2FA data will persist, but make sure not to lose your recovery code if you need to go back for any reason -- that in itself would be an issue due to trade and market cooldowns caused by the removal of Steam Guard device.
My recommendation is to use the old version for as long as you can, since the new Steam app doesn't feature chat, which is instead provided by the buggy Steam Chat app.
As an Android user, I took a look at the activities and boy, there's a lot of unnecessary crap. I chose to stay on the old version even following the official release unless they REALLY provide a good reason to switch.

Personally I went for the official one, simply because it's nice to have the Valve logo on it which matches my deck.
In addition, I feel Valve have done a lot for the Linux community overall, so I'd rather give my money to them as opposed to a company I haven't heard of before who is most likely just aiming to make a quick buck off of Valves success.
I'm aware this opinion might spark outrage in some people, but it's just my opinion

No more Steam Deck reservation queue — buy it now, plus Docking Station available

However, in my case I already have my deck so for me personally it kind of makes no difference so my mind went over to the dock, which I've been waiting for (since I deliberately didn't buy any third party docks).

Quoting: Purple Library GuyEveryone's talking about the dock, but I think it's pretty significant that we've reached the new stage with the deck itself, where people can just buy it instead of signing up for a waiting list. I do think that there are people who don't have that "Oooh, sign up and wait eagerly" enthusiasm who might buy now. It is also now possible to impulse-buy a Steam Deck. Or to buy one for somebody's birthday or anniversary with some confidence that it might arrive at the time you want it to.I think it's great the deck is generally available now!
It is also now possible to talk coherently about things like monthly sales figures and whatnot. Well, if Valve ever tells us any of the information.

Nope not spending money on a dock, I wouldn't use it anyway
*cursor itches closer buy button*
... I mean it's a lot of money right?
*cursor gets closer*
I really shouldn't buy anything else *clicks add to cart*
because I did say I'm not spending any money on games today *enters address details*
But I guess it's not really a game right? *adds card details*
But I really shouldn't *clicks pay*
.. but I did *sighs*.

KDE devs talk Steam Deck and their work for it at Akademy 2022, over a million shipped

It's better explained here:
https://rpm-ostree.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ [External Link]
Arch doesn't have this, although to be fair, for original Arch it's not really suited (since Arch is largely aimed at tinkerers). But, that's not what Valve were aiming for as such.
Sadly it's not something they could quickly just have as their strap-on for the OS at this point.

Quoting: wit_as_a_riddleThanks for clarifying. So if I understand correctly, with package layering, Valve could retain an immutable file system and users could install root privileged packages without them getting wiped upon OS upgrades?Exactly with rpm-ostree, Valve could continue to distribute a "base image" to deck owners, maintaining the "console" affect while also giving users the option to install their own thing.
Nothing available in Arch yet to do this, or is there?

I mean for example, let's take VPN connections. You simply can't set them up in KDE because OpenVPN/WireGuard isn't installed by default, if you put that into distrobox, you still won't be able to get a system-wide VPN connection.
Of course, if you enable "development" mode you can put OpenVPN or WireGuard in there, but as soon as the next SteamOS update is released those changes are wiped and you'll have to manually install them again.
Where as with package layering you could install OpenVPN or WireGuard and it would become part of the compose, and remain after updates, while retaining all the immutable benefits.

Quoting: wit_as_a_riddleDid you see Liam's post about Distrobox? I know it isn't built into SteamOS but it does address your concerns I think.I did, but while that's cool for running other distros and applications it doesn't help when it comes to stuff you want to modify on the OS itself.

Quoting: CatKillerIt's been two years since I last got a steam survey, and never had one on my deck at all :tongue:Quoting: MayeulCNot really. Accounts are selected randomly for the steam survey. If you are, a popup will appear on all of your devices. You'll be counted only one time, I'm not sure on which device. I usually try to answer on my main gaming rig.Nope. My desktop gets surveyed in May and my laptop gets surveyed in August.

It's great to see this!
Now.. if I had one request about SteamOS, it's if Valve made it more like a proper Linux distribution immutable OS.
I mean in the same sense of like Fedora Silverblue, where you can layer packages etc in addition to flatpaks[1].
But it's a minor niggle since this is a specific-purpose device, it would just give a bit more freedom that's all.

Split it a bit like Red Dead Redemption, that way they are effectively separate games:
Single Player = No invasive anti-cheat (who cares if someone cheats in single player?)
Multiplayer Components are then cloud streamed, this way cheating is simply not possible.
The major drawback here though would be ping-times and response times with the whole streaming connection going on. All players would have to have pretty good connections to maintain an enjoyable experience in multiplayer.
To build the game from the ground up with this in mind could work well but to try to bootstrap it into an existing game could be difficult.
But then this would benefit customers, and we know how some gaming companies like EPIC would hate that

Quoting: Arcadius-8606Yeah. That would be interesting!Quoting: CringyBoi42069This is why I think every anti-cheat MP game should be cloud based. Leave that software trash off of my tech.Quoting: MrowlAnd to think Bungie brought Destiny to Stadia, but won't allow Deck users to play it, via Steam OS.The problem is the anti cheat and because Stadia was cloud based anti cheat was not needed.

Transferring files from PC to Steam Deck with FileZilla FTP

But I can see the usage for those who don't have access to a tux-based computer
I'm glad to hear you throw a warning for plain old FTP. So many tutorials on the net just don't even mention the insecurities, it's saddening actually.
So I tend to re-act a little negatively when people mention they still use plain-old FTP  (Since there are better options out there)
I apologize if I came off as disagreeing your application, it wasn't my intent. My comments were aimed solely at plain old FTP, not your application

Quoting: spayder26Nice you mention. Usermode FTP Server supports all FTP, FTPS and SFTP, defaults to FTPS and shows a warning when using the plain old FTP.Interesting, I always forget about Windows & its users tbh.
Its main point is you need a client like FileZilla to use SFTP outside UNIX-like systems, but you can use pretty much any file browser for FTPS (including Windows Explorer).
