Google gives up on Stadia, will offer refunds on games and hardware

Quoting: BlackBloodRumI wonder if they'll do real refunds to your bank account, or just give you credit to your google account so that you have to still use their services to use your refunds?
That would be okay for me. I get back about 280€. Could invest that in a Google Pixel 7, which I want to buy. :)
I guess there's that

Pixel phones are probably the only google things I do buy. Gotta love the ability to flash GrapheneOS the same day it arrives at your doorstep

Quoting: F.UltraThe age old "how hard can it be". Well quite often: much.
Yup!

I think a lot of modern game stores felt that in particular against Steam "How hard could it be knock Valve out the way and bring the money to us instead?"

You only have to look at the numbers to see the answer to that....

If there's one thing you can say about the majority of Steam users; they'll prefer to buy there games on steam, every time instead of using another store and they'll get angry when you say "This game is exclusive to our store now and not on steam!".

or my favourite: "We're pulling all our current and future games off of steam! You must use <store name> instead from now on!"

Though with that said, many steam users might use other stores to buy.. steam activation keys.

In my view Valve have earned this right though, they've done a ton of stuff that benefits gamers in many ways, while keeping the store's own in-house DRM relatively lightweight (in comparison to other game stores, not about what third party DRM games can additionally add, just talking about the standard SteamAPI DRM)

Other examples:
"How hard could it be to get people to ditch their iPods for our Zunes?" - Microsoft
"How hard could it be to get people to use Windows Phone instead of iPhone?" - Microsoft
"How hard could it be to build our own facebook?" - Google (G+)

etc

But it's just business. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

And human nature plays a part, once someone has a favourite it's hard to get them to change their minds. Some people can even become blinkered for their favourite brands to the point of refusing to acknowledge or accept failings/shortcomings of their favourite brand.

Quoting: ShmerlOh, Skyrim? It took them forever but good to see a DRM-free release for it.
To be fair

GOG; Good Old Games :tongue::grin:

Anyway, glad to see GOG still going but.. I've promised myself I won't spend any more money on games for the time being.. so must.. not.. look.. at .. gog... website..

If I recall correctly, they claimed that they were cleverer than the wine developers because they needed so much time.

Anyhow, I'm glad that this scheme is dead.
Sadly, a lot of the large proprietary businesses think like this. It's not overly uncommon for a large business to claim "our product is much better than any free version you can get, it works better yadda yadda".

When they do release the product it can be either:
- Very limited in features
- Buggy / has lots of problems
- Just generally not very good
- Sometimes, rarely, actually a good product

(I'm biased...)

Transferring files from PC to Steam Deck with FileZilla FTP

Quoting: GuestI use 'Usermode FTP Server' from Discover on my Deck to host ftp server
and on my linux desktop i oldfashioned use mc command in terminal and from here i connect to my deck ftp
Do you really need the third party ftp server?

I mean the old ftp protocol is insecure and I wouldn't recommend it at all.

If you want to use midnight commander and assuming you've got ssh setup on your deck, you can just add your alias to .ssh/config and then just run mc and connect using "sftp link" and type the alias for example, it'll then connect over ssh as opposed to the old ftp in a much more secure way.

I really don't recommend old style FTP servers, always use SSH where available. Old FTP transfers your login details in plain text and can be broken into easily.

This is a good example of why it's generally accepted that magnets should be used carefully with electronics that have moving parts

Quoting: BrokattI find KDE Connect to work well enough onm Steam Deck these days. You just need to add the source in Discover via Settings > Add Source... > https://distribute.kde.org/kdeapps.flatpakrepo [External Link]
I would be happier to cover KDE Connect if they put up a proper Flatpak app, one that is not in their testing repo that isn't ready for production. I've spoken to them before, and they claimed it couldn't just be a Flatpak by itself due to various integration issues. Once they have it out properly, I'll take a look.
If you're looking for a "more integrated" feel:
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2022/08/top-quick-steam-deck-tips-and-tricks/comment_id=230213

With this you'll be able to just browse / copy / paste etc to the steam deck directly from dolphin.

It does take a little preparation though. But I prefer it over using FileZilla for such simple tasks.

Just my 2c

Quoting: jordicomaAnd now with ssh we can connect with a terminal remotely to the deck.
And probably (I don't know how to configure) have remote X11.
I haven't tested this with the deck, but it should be the same as any other linux system and I've done it on those.

Create a host entry in your SSH as follows, editing to your requirements:

Host steamdeck
    HostName 192.168.1.11
    Port 22
    User deck
    ForwardX11 yes
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_rsk_a_personal
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_rsk_b_personal

In your steam decks /etc/sshd_config file, add or un-comment the following options line (not the one under match user):

X11Forwarding yes

Then just connect with

ssh steamdeck -X

And you should be able to launch apps using X11 forwarding. (or run a direct application like "ssh steamdeck -X dolphin").

PS: Sorry if this is a bit brief in a hurry.

PS 2: If you're looking for a better visual remote access solution, perhaps try VNC?

I use that flatpak for vnc access to my deck

Quoting: StoneColdSpider

Quoting: StoneColdSpiderThe only problem is that you need to have friends for this to work........
The tux community is the most friendly community around!

Well.. unless you happen to have a disagreement.. then it can get nasty fast, in a full on "My distro is better than your distro" argument.

But aside from that, I'm sure there's people here who'll be your friend!
Well I am an Aussie arsehole..... And yet people still seem to welcome me around here...... So I know the Linux Community is good
Pfft, you're not that bad from what I've seen, I have another aussie friend who is far worse, any chance he has to take a shot and you and make fun and he'll do it. His a good laugh though, because I just do it back

Usually used to talk to him while drunk, he was usually trying to invite me to AU and telling me how great it is by talking about brothels and such topics with links... he is one weird individual.

So hey, for an aussie, you don't do that from what I've seen, so you're probably a walk in the park compared to him!

But hey, we POMs like to keep our ex-prisoners happy, so I'm sure lots of brits will be your friend!

(No offense intended of course, light hearted joke)

PS: Yes, aussies are weird, but hey Kevin Bloody Wilson is hilarious!

Quoting: StoneColdSpiderAs for the my distro is better than you distro....... That just reminds me of the days of being a 5 year old in the playground at school having a my dad can beat up your dad argument........ Totally meaningless and no one ever actually wins.....
Yup.. I usually just answer "Well actually all distros have their ups and downs" and start explaining how each distro is better in it's own way for a particular purpose, it's usually met with an end of argument followed by end of discussion

I would rather a game be in only one category the games main category, for example, Assassin's creed is primarily stealth as opposed to action.

Naturally, this is why I still prefer to make manual categories, it lets me organize them as I want without duplicates, since I'd rather not scroll past the same game 5-6 times just because it happens to also "technically" fall under another tag also.

It's no big deal. It's just a preference. I was merely stating why I prefer not to use them, everyone else can do as they please .

PS:
I am also that weirdo that organises their physical DVD and games in year, followed by alphabetical order and finally genre on the the shelf. And don't you dare put that DVD back in the wrong place. :woot:

Oh, and make sure you put the DVD inside the case so the disc is facing the same direction as the case. I don't want to see upside down text on a disc because it is incorrectly rotated in the case
