An update on the status of porting Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation for Linux

No Linux port, no console versions because you need a "clean slate" version of it.
Interesting statement. Very interesting statement indeed. I'd love to know what exactly they mean by that.
I suppose they mean that they're separating the Windows only stuff from the rest of the game so they only have a back end to port. Seems like something you would want to do from the start though.

Quoting: poisondReal time ray-tracing is the holy grail of computer graphics, and it's great that some company has finally started (partially) implementing it.
But even for windows users it's probably not worth it due to the old catch 22. There's no games making use of it (yet) and until those features trickle down to low cost mainstream GPUs there probably won't be a whole lot.

Even more so for linux users. Regardless of NVidias awesome day one support for the features, my magic crystal ball says that it's likely going to be at least 1-2 GPU generations till we see any game on linux making use of it. So yeah, not worth it.
Although ray tracing is obviously superior to rasterisation, the use in gaming is a bit of a weird one. Even if we forget about the global illumination stuff of generic path tracing renderers, there are still major advantages in geometry (no flat triangle limitation) and reflection/transmission calculations. Even with the impressive rays/sec numbers that nvidia put out, I'm still not clear on what that means for the complexity of a scene. I'm not even sure that these extension go beyond the flat triangle geometry for ray tracing. Time will tell how this is going to turn out.

I was surprised by the number of games that are going to use the ray tracing features though. Even the now released Shadow of the Tomb Raider is said to have RTX support. That may mean that the interface is not too hard and that it is quite easy to integrate into current renderers. If that is the case, adoption may be quicker than you think.

It's been quite funny to see people respond to the new RTX cards. Like saying things like "only 20% performance increase, this sucks" when they're looking at the 1080p benchmark of a current generation game. When you look a little further you can easily see that on very heavy GPU loads it does much better. The 4k Ultra Superposition benchmarks shows +50% over the 1080 Ti, which is not out of the ordinary for a next generation card. But you need something to push it.

What we can all agree on is that it is not the most economical card in the world. In fact, it's bloody expensive for the performance it delivers. I suppose this is the price for lack of competition in the high end of the spectrum. They simply have no reason to offer it for less. This is probably the reason why they're releasing the Ti immediately. They start selling expensive models first before introducing a more reasonable 2070 into the market.

The latest Steam Client Beta has some fixes for Steam Play, Steam Link improvements and so on

I wonder if they'll ever add broadcasting to the Linux/Mac Steam clients. Tried to share my game screen with my brother a few weeks ago, but the Linux client still doesn't support it. A bit odd since the Steam Link works just fine.

i have a SSD and space is valuable, but 3Gb is kinda nothing. 20GB is another game
My Fortnite install is 25GB including the Wine prefix (usually takes about 2 GB as well). The Culling is 5.6 GB on disk.

Quoting: TheSHEEEP500 key?! Will there even be enough of us for that who actually like BR games?
I predict that they're gone within a day. Even when restricted to existing account owners.

Quoting: ElvanexDamn, 500 keys??? That sounds like they're either crazy generous, or crazy desperate... lol. Either way, I'm always down for a free game. :)
I suppose those are keys to the beta of the BR mode that will be free anyway. So I would conclude that they simply don't have enough players at the moment. Of course it helps if the game would actually work. So let's see when that update arrives. Seems they may have learned something since they didn't mention a date this time.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyUhhh . . . are you trying to say that it's not possible, or somehow incredibly difficult, to type without your eyes on the keyboard if your keyboard is qwerty?
It's hard to unlearn 20 years of habit.

Quoting: EhvisThe game has a few bugs though. Binding the comma key messes up the input configuration. Not nice for those on dvorak keyboards.
Dvorak keyboards, huh? So yeah, I guess good keybinding is a major issue.

Haven't heard anything about them for a long time, though. I feel like the technological impetus for them is gone, or at least greatly attenuated. I mean, the point of Dvorak keyboards is that if you need to type an awful lot really fast, they're more efficient. Or rather, I guess they're more efficient period, but it matters if you need to type an awful lot really fast.
It matters if you want to learn to type without constantly having your eyes on your keyboard. Which is very useful in itself. And after having typed the "wrong" way for 20 years on a qwerty keyboard, it's nearly impossible to change your way. Switching over keyboards takes away your experience and allows you to start again.

Funny enough, I switched to dvorak at around the same time as I switched to Linux. Both are a superior solution that most people don't want to use because they get stuck in their ways.

The game has a few bugs though. Binding the comma key messes up the input configuration. Not nice for those on dvorak keyboards. And I have had several instances where the game soft locked during dialogues. Several weeks after reporting that (including save games and log files) I received a reply with the suggestion of deleting everything (including save games) and try again. Yeah, how about no.

Otherwise I'm enjoying it thought. But then I like these interactive story games when they're done well.
