Ubuntu flavours to drop Flatpak by default and stick to Snaps
23 Feb 2023 at 1:50 pm UTC

Do you guys know of any good KDE-based distro, as close to Ubuntu as possible (since most native games are tested on it and I love Deb packaging / user-friendliness) but without Snap ?

Classic city-builder Nebuchadnezzar gets a big free update and DLC
20 Feb 2023 at 2:36 pm UTC

It's cool to see the game moving forward, even though the way they implemented warfare will make some players angry (people who wanted a AOE-like experience). They decided to integrate the feature while still focusing on the city-building experience. I for one like it, but it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Star Wars Dark Forces source port The Force Engine adds Linux support

Currently it seems Linux users need to build it from source and the actual build instructions aren't in the readme
It's a cmake project, so it's kinda straight forward:

First install dependencies (Ubuntu like distro it would be sudo apt install build-essential cmake libglew-dev libsdl2-dev libglew-dev librtmidi-dev libdevil-dev librtaudio-dev)

Clone the repo, create a build dir and run cmake/make.

git clone https://github.com/luciusDXL/TheForceEngine.git
cd TheForceEngine
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ..
make
Thanks for the info, will definitely try it out. Too bad they don't provide AppImages in the Releases section. Let's hope and cross fingers for the future !

Factorio is about to increase in price so be quick

Quoting: BreizhDespite the price increase, this game is worth it.

If you don't want to pay, then don't pay: the game is DRM-free, so it's easy to play for free. When you have spent hundreds of hours on it (you will), then you can buy it to thank the devs. That's what I did.

Besides the purchase is their only source of income, the existing players don't make any more money. It remains to be seen if the DLC will bring free updates in parallel (like Euro Truck Simulator 2 does, which compensates for its low price and big sales by regularly selling new DLCs (almost one DLC at €20 per year) to existing players).

And then, other games have seen their price increase over time, for example Minecraft, which is still very popular. On the other hand for Minecraft, all updates are free and there is no DLC, but for it too, the cost is only covered by new players, not the existing ones.

So personally, I would say that at worst, we should wait to see what they will bring that would justify their expenses (and therefore this way of covering them). Just the Switch release and the adaptation to controllers is a proof that they don't pay themselves to do nothing, at least… In any case I still recommend the game (even if it means giving away copies to those who are reluctant to pay for it at first…).
Yes, the game is top notch and still totally worth the money. But they could and should've just said they wanted more money for their shareholders, and spared everyone the hypocrisy, because I highly doubt the devs will actually benefit from it.

The next release of 0 A.D. will have experimental Vulkan API support

The very first open-source game I told my self it had nice graphics. Back in, like, 2005 ? Geez, I'm old :(

Can you believe the project started in 2001-2003 ? That was ages ago ! Back then, the pinnacle of what Linux could offer to a "standard user" was Mandrake. I still had some games that required MS-DOS, listening to music or watching a video on the web was a mess, provided you even had enough bandwidth, etc.

Imagine what the game looked like inside (the code). It probably has nothing to do with its current code.

Hogwarts Legacy to be Steam Deck Verified at launch

Quoting: officerniceGG, Valve. Free Linux support. No ports needed. Lord Carmack prophesised the truth.
Genuinely interested on this one. Did Carmack prophetize Linux would become a good gaming platform ?

That wouldn't be surprising since ID Software were among the first to support Linux.

Star Wars Dark Forces lives on again with The Force Engine
30 Dec 2022 at 12:57 am UTC

Just tested it with Proton-GE (7.41) on Steam. It was THIS close to working properly.

Tweaked it a bit with placing this as command arguments :

eval $(echo "%command%" | sed "s/DosBox\/\/dosbox.exe'.*/Game\/TheForceEngine\.exe'/")

- The game launches and you see a menu. A crash dialog appears "SEH exception" yada yada yada.
- You can ignore this dialog by clicking in the menu again (if you click "OK" the game closes).
- If you ignored the dialog, the game seems to work, but alas without sound (Kubuntu 22.04 here, lemme know if you got it working).

KDE Plasma gets Wayland Fractional Scaling, Fixing Multi-Screen and a Steam Deck updater
20 Dec 2022 at 11:12 am UTC

One problem I've had for the past 2 years with a 2-monitors setup with KDE is the main screen's wallpaper being randomly disabled at startup (2 times out of 3).

Have to re-set it and it's good for the remainder of the session.
