Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton

Quoting: MohandevirI've always had some special attachment to Feral, being the most active porting house to bring use many awesome titles, but things have changed... Unfortunately. I whish them the best of luck.

As for Proton, it's probably the cheapest solution that Valve could come up with that will please developers and lure them to SteamOS (mark my words, I didn't say Linux desktop).

Imo, Valve's Linux gaming strategy was never targeted at desktop usage. The desktop war as been lost a long time ago. Not much moved or will move that needle. The Steam Deck is becoming the corner stone of Valve's strategy and Proton is the way forward, for them, like it or not. It's not targeted at techy savy Linux (or not) users, it's targeted at those that just want to turn on the thing, sit back on the couch and play. It might end up helping Linux desktop, but it's going to be a side effect. I think that what Valve is targeting at, is a Windows computer besides a SteamOS Steam Deck.

Seriously I can deal with that even if it's not my first choice scenario. Thanks to Feral for all it did for us and thanks to Valve for creating the opportunity. It's been a fabulous ride so far... And, for me, away from Windows. Personnallly, on this point, it's "mission accomplished".
Or they could go on making a killing by porting to switch since it runs linux and contracts are easier to get

Quoting: LeopardFor anyone wonders if the game will work at day 1 or not ; i grabbed it last year when it was free on EGS for 24 hours ( perma keep ) :

It works on Wine+DXVK since day 1. So Feral porting this or not really shouldn't matter.
its not the fact it works its the fact its not native and proton is the reason its not native

Looks like Splitgate will be the next 'big thing' FPS supported on Linux

Quoting: officernice2 hours in and... it's okay. Reminds me a bit of Ballistic Overkill in terms of overall quality. The maps are okay, the UI is a bit meh. Cosmetics... meh. Outside of the portals the gameplay is just standard FPS. Not much to note with the weapons either for me. I'd still take TF2 and Quake over this. Too bad QC was borked with the latest update... One thing I think all these new FPS games need, Quake included, is a map editor and the ability to run your own servers. You need all the leeway you need to compete with other shooters.
Am an hour in and yeah heavy ballistic overkill vibes except i liked that, this one i seem to be pretty good at it there are a ton of streamers playing it at minute so if you have ever wanted to take out a streamer on a stream now is the time apparently i took out amouranth and some streamer from korea i got messages on steam about it apparently their fans/financial backers get very salty. But gameplay wise if you love death match and some of halo odd game modes had four games of snipers and shottys back to back which is pretty straight forward open portal get close to oblivious snipers boom shotgun rinse and repeat.

Ubisoft are keeping an eye on the Steam Deck, will release on it if it's big enough

Quoting: SpykerI also share this concern than most people will put Windows on it, even if Valve nailed Proton compatibility and performance, those who use the Microsoft Gamepass will want it on the device too and we can't do anything against that.
I think a lot of people will just play it as is, no different to any other handheld or console. If people want to install Windows, they can and probably will end up regretting it if it doesn't work exactly as hoped for. They probably will blame Valve too, but better that than it being a locked down device, and they can always go back to SteamOS setup as no warranty or secure feature tripped. As long as the majority are happy and it boosts the overall success, they can complain all they like in their reddit corners. Maybe we will even see some converted if they rage on a Windows install then realise SteamOS works well.

I agree to a point the second x game doesnt work they ll be on to support and demanding a refund, to previous comments no generally people do not want to install an os but mention linux and the response you ll get is if they know what linux is they go oh that thing for hackers and no lifers. If they dont know what it is the first thing they will say is "is it like windows". As this was the sort of thing i dealt with when my company rolled out linux back in 2008 when i was working in IT.

Quoting: Whitewolfe80The key take away from this is yes there is no reason if you are already using an engine that supports linux natively. Its a bit more problematic if its not a linux native engine. I mean unreal has a linux version its just nowhere near feature complete to the windows one.
Reading the post, it's even worse: there's no reason if you're not already using an engine that supports GNU/Linux natively, but supports it well, and you're already familiar with a GNU/Linux environment (as their lead programmer was).

People already comfortable with GNU/Linux have little to no troubles in porting a game, and quite often might do so because the workflow suits them better. The real trouble is getting developers not already familiar with the environment more actively involved. As a comment on that, even Google provide Stadia hooks into Visual Studio so that all work on games can be done on Windows (they just essentially remote into a Stadia instance to do everything, from within Visual Studio).
In truth the answer is for a small studio using tools such as Godot losing out on 7 percent is a big deal for EA/Activision/Ubisoft/Take 2 & Microsoft its a tiny amount and can easily be ignored. That mindset has only further been reinforced by the work codeweavers and valve have done on proton. Why bother even looking at a native version when other software companies already have functional work around software that is capable of supporting their latest efforts with no expense to the original publisher and to sweeten the deal if it doesnt work no support costs just profit from the game sale.
