Action-RPG in Early Access 'Last Epoch' adds in online multiplayer

Quoting: Zappor
Quoting: devlandFYI, characters are stored on their servers. You have to login to play.

Offline play is promised at release. Shady stuff IMO.
This is completely wrong, offline characters are stored locally.
That's true, but currently does demand an online login in order to play. They intend to remove that requirement with the v1 release, but even then, of course, you'll still have to login every 30 days for Steam to validate your account.

Quoting: TriasSpend a few hours in single. Apart from no-textures-during-choosing-a-character at the beginning, I encountered no notable bugs. Performance was also good on my side. :).
If you got the no-textures during character select, then you're probably missing the mini-map borders, ground textures and quite a few particle effects. The game was much, much prettier with -force-vulkan for me. But I did the same - played for 45 minutes thinking this was the experience, then went hunting for Linux issues and discovered that vulkan fixed so much of the game's engine.

Quoting: JarmerIf you go into steam for the game, and force it to use proton experimental, the game will do an update then it fixes all the texture stuff. Character choice screen is fine, etc... I played it a bunch yesterday without any issues at all. Really liking it!
Or just use -force-vulkan on the native version, provided you don't intend to do multiplayer with Windows users.

Couple of things after spending my Sunday afternoon playing with a friend:
1. On Linux native, using mesa, I had to use -force-vukan to get any textures to load in this game. This was first reported to Last Epoch on the Steam Forums in 2018, so it's incredibly disappointing it's still not fixed.
2. When transitioning from one zone to another in multiplayer, the guest will frequently disconnect if they click on the zone transition first, before the host (who was on Windows). Pretty frustrating, so I switched the game to Proton Experimental and removed -force-vulkan. After doing so, I didn't get any disconnects through around 5 hours of play, even when the host and I were in entirely different zones for extended periods (which is rare, but sometimes happened if we needed to offload loot).

Other than the -force-vukan issue, performance seemed reasonable. My beast PC handled it no problem, and my mate who is on Windows with 1060 also oggled at the pretty graphics and commented how smooth it played. So the heavy optimisations you can read about in their blog have paid off. Zone transitions still take a few seconds to load though.

The long and short of it - this is finally a game that scratches my Grim Dawn itch. It's a little more "zoomed in" than GD, but nowhere near as bad as Path of Exile. Build customisation is decent (although we're only just level 20) and the various skills are inventive. For example, the mage has a skill called "static" that deals immense damage, but he need to move around to build up charge! The Acolyte has a hilarious skill where she summons flaming zombies who then run screaming at the nearest enemy and explode - like those bomb guys from Serious Sam. They're hilarious and can get you into trouble sometimes by running off to attack a horde of enemies you hadn't spotted!

Lots of fun, basically. Really enjoying it.

The Humble Heroines Bundle is an awesome deal for Steam Deck and Linux Desktop

Quoting: TurkeysteaksJust purchased the bundle, though already owned Control and Hellblade. Particularly excited to try Sable.

Side note, not sure if anyone is aware but if using the link Liam gives you, when adjusting where your money goes, an extra option is given to choose how much of your purchase goes to GamingOnLinux.
Yeah, they took away the "per-game" sliders, but there's still a nice amount of customisation possible. Here's what the default £20 looks like.

So now you can bung Liam even more if you're so inclined!

Worth it, hugely, for the first two games alone. Control is superb and Hellblade's atmosphere is incredible. Praey looks great (a Shadow of the Collosus tribute) and both Batora and Dreamscaper have a Grim Dawn vibe, but single player. I've no interest in Syberia (point'n'click), but I've been meaning to pick up Sable for months now. Call of the Sea looks like a nice wee bonus - a first-person puzzler.

Might have to pick this up, even though I already own the two main stars.

Prepare to see a lot more of Epic Online Services, with Epic's new self-publishing

Quoting: RomlokDo the Epic Online Services require one to have an Epic Store account to use?(
Nope, at least Returnal from Sony was transparent. Perhaps, because it was a Steam release, Sony found a way to pass in my SteamID? But if it did, it didn't tell me.

Epic is a hard no from me. I don't mind if games incorporate EOS into their offering, but if they ever get to a point where they ask me to login to an Epic account, or even register my SteamID against an Epic account, I'm out.

Sadly, I suspect that's their end-game: get EOS on as many games as possible, then enforce a login. That's the kind of person Sweeney is.

Valve doesn't need much to make a Steam Deck 2 a huge success

Quoting: RealChrisGames That Won't Work At All Due To Incompatibility Issues On Linux For SteamOS Steam Deck -

Entropia Universe
Fallen Earth
The Chronicles Of Riddick, DVD Complete Set.

So Far, Those Are The Games That Won't Even Boot Up Due To Either Launches Or Default Video Resolution Not Correcting Itself Automatically Under SteamOS. Which Crashes The SteamDeck.

That Said, We Need Steam Deck 2, To Fully Run Older Exe Launchers That Rely On Programs Like Internet Explorer And So On, We Need More Development On These Issues That Aren't Being Focused On, To Fully Get Off The Reliance Of Windows Desktops. So For Me, I'm Okay With The Battery Life, I'm Okay With My 512GB Model, However.. SteamDeck 2 Should Have The Maximum Of 2TB By Standard And Minimum Should Be 250GB For The Cheaper Models. I Think It Was A Mistake For The 64GB Model Bc Of SSDs Having Limited Writing Before The Drives Fail Compared To HDDs.

If They Can't Focus On Older Games To Launch Properly Like Fallen Earth For Example, My Primary Focus For Steam Would Be To Focus On Us Desktoppers That Want To Ditch Windows Entirely And Focus On Desktop SteamOS Whereas We Can Put Our Own HardWare Into Our Machines And Run Older Or Games Like Entropia Universe At Our Higher Frame rates Or Resolution Sets To Get Some Games To Boot.
So weird that I can't really read this comment, just because every word is capitalised! I keep having to re-read each word to understand why, and I can't quite bring myself to form the full sentence, because of that. It's like, every three words becomes a Title and then they lose meaning in the wider structure of the sentence.

Not gonna lie, almost all the improvements I'd like to see in a Steam Deck 2 are just software updates to my existing Steam Deck 1. I'd like a better consistency in Desktop Mode between controller settings (and for common Steam/Options shortcuts to work in Desktop Mode too). I'd like the Store page to have easier navigation and better search. I have issues buying anything on the Store - the credit card check frequently fails during purchase.

In fact, the only thing hardware related I'd like to see in a Steam Deck 2 is more pronounced Steam/Options buttons. I use them to adjust brightness and finding them by touch in a dark room is hit or miss. Would be nice if the newer model is lighter too... but I'm happy with the screen, the heat, the fans, the power, and just about everything else on the hardware front. It's an amazing device. I love it.

And the battery - good grief, it's amazing. I don't play top-end games, so I restrict frames to 40, and TDP to 10, and it lasts for hours. Easily four, at least. It's incredible. And yet silky smooth gameplay on things like Soulstone Survivors, Monster Train or Ring of Pain.

I know that when we were kids, we were promised jetpacks... but until they appear, I'll take the Steam Deck, thanks.

Quoting: deathxxxI have Octopath and it runs super smooth and never breaks or bugs.
It's a good-looking game, one I'd probably buy if they ever remove Denuvo. But it's Sqeenix, so I doubt they will, even though there were some reports in the past that Square were moving away from Denuvo.

Man, I love so much that Brotato is on that list! All I seem to play these days is Soulstone Survivors.
