Collabora announce 'Mercury' hand-tracking for open source XR runtime Monado

If you google Northstar VR, it sounds like they have a competing hand-tracking project, also open-source?? Or is it the same one... because it doesn't look the same!

This looks incredible though, and I do especially like the idea of a Northstar mixed-reality headset, instead of the more fully immersive VR experience. Obviously they do very different things, of course.

This game is an absolute joy. I poured probably around (guessing) 40 or so hours into it when it was on Itch as a freebie. Insta-bought on Steam and I've played another 20 hours there, as new characters and items were added. Can't get enough of it, tbh - it's got that compulsive "just one more go" to it, up there with Ring of Pain, Monster Train or Brotato, with a hint of Dicey Dungeons. Truly excellent.

Quoting: ElectricPrism
Quoting: KlaasI've always wondered why they didn't implement that functionality sooner. They have to pay for the bandwidth – so it should be their priority to avoid duplicate downloads.
Maybe someone could think of any other corporate for-profit company that does this? Maybe it's just me, but I can't off the top of my head.

I think this is a cultural problem, and I'm glad Valve is wise.
Dropbox does have this option - if you tick "Lan Sync", it will broadcast for other PCs on your network (using the same account) and use them to sync data if available. Seems to work pretty well.

Zink driver for OpenGL over Vulkan gets a 10x performance boost for DOOM 2016
15 Feb 2023 at 8:40 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestHe specifically mentioned performance... anyway, if he has a problem with Vulkan crashing, he should just use the OpenGL renderer!
I think the point was that if their card doesn't support OpenGL (which... we don't know - PinballWizard doesn't share any PC info), then Zink is the only way to use the OpenGL renderer. I think?

Quoting: BlackBloodRumThis is the wrong way to look at local attacks. Hear me out.
No, that's exactly the right way to look at a local attack - as Liam notes in the article, you should still patch it, but a local attack absolutely is limited in how it can affect your system. A second attack is needed to chain to this one.

The messaging couldn't be clearer in the article.

Of course, not really saying you're wrong... just that you're repeating the same message.

Gladiator battling deck-builder Alina of the Arena gets Steam Deck support

I've had my eye on this one for months now. This might just tip me over the edge and convince me to buy it at last!

I notice that Cheeseness is also involved in Capes, which give me a positive vibe for the overall quality (no pressure, Cheese!). Fingers crossed for this. Hope it launches soon!

Ubisoft just broke their games on Linux desktop and Steam Deck

Quoting: sfjuocekrAre you also going to write an article everytime Blizzard breaks their launcher?

Currently the launcher simply doesn't start if you don't install the Tahoma font and doing so leads to a peculiar bug that Windows users already had to deal with for a long time...

Everytime my character now flaps on its mount, the nameplate increases in size... same happens when people jump.

This never happened with the fallback font...
That's a weird one, sure enough. But I doubt articles about Blizzard are worthy of coverage unless Blizzard themselves announce that they're going to support Linux (or wine/proton). Valve offer a packaged, "turn-key" solution to play Windows games on Linux/Deck - Steam. So if a Steam-launched game that was working stops working, I think that's big news (as in, literally, I'm directly affected - I bought the game to play on Linux and now it doesn't work).

Ubisoft just broke their games on Linux desktop and Steam Deck

Well, as of midnight in the UK, Wed evening / Thu morning, it's working again. A new Proton experimental just landed and I've just tested it - all good again. But seriously, Ubi... what a joke they are.

These were the most popular Steam Deck games for January 2023

I'm still so, so surprised that so many top-end games are on there. I only use my SteamDeck for card-battlers, horde-survival and so on. 2D games with slick presentation - that's my bag on the Deck. For anything vaguely powerful, I'm at my desk, beefy GPU, and mouse/kbd.
