Steam Increases SteamOS Branding On Its Store

While I don't want to see the tux icon go, in the end as long as the games work just as well on GNU/Linux desktop as they do on SteamOS I'll be happy.

Oh that would be cool, AVP would be awesome and I have yet to play the sniper zombie games but I own at least one of them.

Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition Updated With Online Multiplayer
29 Jan 2014 at 10:12 pm UTC

Quoting: HamishWait, this only started being able to use Steam's online multiplayer features now? What was the point of it before then if EDuke32 already offered almost all of the same features and the whole reason anyone might want to play this was for the Steamworks integration?
The point was that it was in steam and a simple click to install, thats about it. EDuke32 still has more features I think. I have been using eduke32 for years but I'm looking forward to this steam version because I have many friends that are not into computers and cant figure out how to install and setup (hires textures, etc...) eduke32. Steam offers them a one click experience and that will be good for them. But yes there really is no benefit that I can see if you are already an eduke32 user.

Unity3D Web Player In Linux Browsers Thanks To Pipelight
27 Jan 2014 at 1:11 am UTC

Quoting: Quote from HadBabitsI appreciate their efforts, though mainly for allowing me to watch Netflix. (Despite performance and heavy graphical errors if not running fullscreen; I think it's an catalyst issue)
What kind of graphical errors? I did not experience any errors using nvidia so your assumption might be correct.

Unity3D Web Player In Linux Browsers Thanks To Pipelight

Ugh, I haven't even heard about this horrible abomination. I'm going to have to roll for sanity loss now.
Its the best way to watch netflix in linux though. I dont really use netflix but I bought a months worth of service just to try out pipelight. It worked well actually for me but I did not try any other service. I would be very dissapointed to see developers think they could claim linux support by using pipelight but for those people that have netflix accounts this is much better than the previous way which was to run the whole browser in wine.

Free Valve Games For Debian Developers
24 Jan 2014 at 2:09 am UTC

Quoting: Quote from ShmerlSo, you can unpack the backup created by Steam without the client? That's good. Is it just a simple zip, tarball etc.? Does it contain all the installation scripts (if they ever exist? I have no clue. On some systems installers have scripts).
I may not be completely accurate on this part but from the games Ive actually looked at (in linux) there was no installing required. It just downloaded the files into a folder and then ran the program from there. Usually the libraries were inside a folder contained in that download or were part of the steam runtime (which means you would have to download those libs if you dont have steam). So if you take that folder and tar it, it is no different from the tars you get from some of the humble games. I have downloaded quite a few humble games that you just uncompress and run, no installation required.

Free Valve Games For Debian Developers
23 Jan 2014 at 1:52 am UTC

This is cool for Debian devs that don't have a problem using steam. I'm not a Debian dev but even if I were I think I own all of the Valve games. This makes me wonder though, when is Valve going to release Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Portal 2 for Linux? Dont really care about CS:GO but Ive been waiting to finish Portal 2 and to play more co-op for a while now.

Alienware's Steam Machine Won't Be Customizable
22 Jan 2014 at 9:08 pm UTC

Alienware has said that they will in fact have two machines with the steamOS available, one it the steam machine mentioned in the article above, the other is the X51 which previously came with ubuntu installed. http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51/pd [External Link] So if you want a customizable/configurable steam machine you can buy the X51 but if you want a more console like machine you can go with their official steam machine. The X51 will have the option of windows/steamos, they appear to have dropped support for ubuntu.
