On the controversies of Humble, Canonical and Team Meat

Quoting: "berarma, post: 7297, member: 131"Amish, I was thinking the same. I'll ignore him until he has something interesting to say. Why are we giving him so much publicity?

Yay, I am Amish again!

Sorry, not trying to be a dick, but my name gets mangled so much I have to take some perverse pleasure in pointing it out. ;)

On the subject of Team Meat, I think the best thing to do is ignore them like any other troll, at least this Tommy fellow as Edmund McMillan could just be painted as mistaken in this instance.

Still, it is people like this that can give independent gaming a bad name: stuck up and full of ego. It does gall me the credit that Super Meat Boy gets compared to many other more creative and constructive Indie titles by other developers, including by the Humble Bundle guys. And note that is a personal opinion and not a defence for Canonical or any other such statement. I am hardly their best friend either...

GODUS god game funded for Linux!

Black and White was a really great game right up until the later parts where it started to fall apart. Still enough quality there for me to be optimistic about this one.

Steam updates...

Look, I understand that Ubuntu is their main target, but not supporting the FreeDesktop.org system tray standard (as far as I am aware that is the problem, could just be talking out of my hat) is a really stupid situation to be in. What about Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu users?

Humble Indie Bundle 7!

I would appreciate the original Shank being offered as a bonus title since I missed out on HIB4.

EDIT: Also, who wants to place bets on whether Torchlight 2 is going to appear in a future bundle?

THQ looking at possible Linux ports
16 Dec 2012 at 6:14 pm UTC

Quoting: "Anon, post: 7118"Well, maybe that bundle wasn't such a terrible thing after all? If this is indeed happening, and they decide for it, then well, damn.

This still does not forgive the HIB guys throwing off their principles for them. If they do port games in a way that I feel like supporting them, I will though.

Eureka offers a new option for Doom mappers
16 Dec 2012 at 6:31 pm UTC

For what it is worth, here is the map I made while testing Eureka:
http://icculus.org/~hamish/garden.wad [External Link]

This took about an hour and a half to build and test, so do not expect anything that elaborate. The map itself is quite difficult as you have absolutely no cover, so you have to be fast on your feet and make sure you do not get stuck on trees

Steam to become an Open Beta next week!
13 Dec 2012 at 5:37 pm UTC

Quoting: "liamdawe, post: 7096, member: 1"The beta for me is very stable now so it's good to see them open this up to the public, it really will be interesting to see over the next year exactly how it affects the Linux landscape, as it already has by bringing us some higher profile games like Killing Floor to Linux.

Not to sound too much like a buzzkill but in the case of Killing Floor the Tripwire guys have been friendly to Linux for years (they started as UT2004 modders) but they could not make a port because of Steamworks. Now this may sound a little simplistic, but you could even say that Valve kept the title from us for three years (even longer for Red Orchestra). Croteam of course also has a Linux history, and they also said the main thing that was keeping them back was because that they were now using Steamworks.

It will be interesting to see if it attracts some more devs that were not simply kept from the platform because of Steam, but rather are actually attracted to it due to the interest surrounding it.

Playing with EDuke3D will result in a superior experience though. Although boss battles are ridiculously easy with mouse-look. :D
