Some thoughts on the Shadowrun series

Quoting: XzylI loved the shadowrun games, I tried my best to be evil-ish, indifferent to life, basically a cold merc with a taste for gold. I felt restricted in that quest but they were still very fun anyway. I liked HK the best,DMS second and dragonfalls last even though it was still a great game. Like Hamish, I tried to stick to one train of thought, "handgun?", "attitude?", "check", "check", time to roll!
That does not surprise me really, seeing as how Dragonfall out of all of them seems to have the most incentives for being a good Samaritan in terms of additional content and story flow, while in Hong Kong you are, as I say in the article, working for a cruel crime lord.

Quoting: scaineHaha, but it's still rouge, not rogue. I don't think he was annoyed by the capitalisation...!
I could have sworn I also copied his spelling... no matter, fixed again.

Quoting: nattydreadStrange no mention of Baldur's gate?
As I say in the article, I am still a bit of an RPG neophyte, but I do have both of the Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate sitting in my GOG.com backlog. I really should get around to playing them at some point, seeing as how they are both local favourite sons as far as gaming is concerned around here (seriously, the developers of the new versions are located just across the river from my father's office) but for the moment I am planning on jumping into Hard West instead.

Quoting: ColomboNope, SPOILERS ... Duncan ... you need to really start reading into his story, he mention dating girl before and then, if you continue talking with him, you find out that he is gay.
Ah, okay, that makes sense. I guess I just spent too much time chatting it up with Racter about how the future of humanity will be our transition to psychopathic cyborgs instead.

Quoting: ColomboHowever, I would not call SR "cRPG". It plays more like tactical TB squad based game with heavy on the story aspects and a lot of moral gray areas. Although I might be just RPG purist hating too much combat in p'n'p RPGs and RPGs in general and preferring "living" as PC, then all those an hour long combats with daily and encounter powers as you might see in DnD.
I am more than happy to engage in some semantic pedantry myself. ;)

Quoting: GrimfistNice writing Liam, took me a while to read it through ;)
See Liam, you inspire so much love here that you get praised even in articles you were not involved with. :P

Quoting: ColomboSR:HK has much more text than SR:D, which some people dislike, but also some people said that SR:HK has much better characters, like one of the best examples of good portrayal of gay character in game.
I am not sure I caught that, unless you are referring to the backstory for Glory in Drangonfall instead?

Quoting: ziabiceI liked the first game because of the setting and the very good Italian translation, then bought the second episode, but the lack of translation stopped me to play it (there's a lot of text).
As an English native speaker one is often unaware of just how easy it can be for us to pick up a game and expect it to work in our language. Being reminded of this more can only be a good thing for developers.

Quoting: Stupendous ManOne of the reasons why I stopped playing back then was because you couldn't do manual saves, only autosaves on transitions, which caused too much replaying.
With the more recent versions I was playing you can quicksave any time you are not committing an action.

Quoting: chuzzle44If I'm not mistaken, Carmack had little to do with ID's open-source or linux support. I believe there was a couple of other people who pushed for it.
You are mistaken, at least when it comes to the source code releases. Linux was an area he dabbled in, but was never all that enthused with, with most of the Linux work being done by Timothée Besset and others, but he does deserve all of the credit for releasing the legacy game code, even pushing for it to continue under Zenimax while he let unofficial Linux binaries get squashed under the heavy boot of corporate policy.

You can read Masters of Doom if you do not believe me about his good intentions regarding source code.

I was worried that when Carmack left id companies would just stop releasing source code, but within the past year we have had the Serious Sam and Postal code releases, and now we actually have Wolfire going further by releasing their legacy game assets. Onward and upwards.

Stefan Achatz, the developer who worked on Linux support for Roccat devices answers why he's stopping

So basically if someone wants to get a start making Linux device drivers, with the distinct possibility that they might be offered a job somewhere down the line, they should get involved with Stefan's FOSS project.
