Check out the demo for Beacon Patrol based on the popular board game

Quoting: Purple Library GuyKinda reminds me of Carcassonne.
True, very basic "cover" of Carcassonne without rivalisation... Looks like very nice relaxing game for one person, but as multiplayer board game - doesn't make sense without competition between players...

Cooler Master and KFC team up to create a 'console' PC and now I've seen everything
28 Dec 2020 at 11:43 am UTC

Hmmm... I think that they missed the point. "Real" PC game console (Linux or Windows - do not matter) - will be too expensive for "average" KFC consumer.

But... Some potato based PC could be quite affordable (for example based on Raspberry Pi). What is needed? Computer capable enough to start browser - so almost everything nowadays. Unfortunately streaming services like GeForce NOW and Stadia require commercial, proprietary and spying Chrome browser. License for installing Chrome could be probably quite expensive if Google realizes that they could earn on it - probably they will force manufacturer to use not Linux but fully optimized for Google "telemetry" ChromeOS or Android.... Open-source Chromium could be the solution...

Raspberry Pi could handle start some old console emulators plus some small indie games "natively" on Linux. All other AAA games - access via streaming services like GeForce NOW website.

Quoting: slaapliedjeKind of weird, because I have 4k monitors and I am pretty sure I would notice the difference with 1080p vs 720p on them an Netflix looks fine in firefox on Linux. Granted there is the occasional crap look because my ISP isn't the best.
I have also been able to play Disney+ in Linux with Firefox, so do not have to use the shitpile that is Chrome for that. So I am happy.
Quoting: scaineI'm in the same boat - I sit about a foot and a half away from my Predator 4K and I use it to watch Netflix on Firefox without a hint that there's anything wrong with the picture. I'd love to see a blind test against a sizable sampling of people to see if they could actually tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, even on hidef screens that should make that "difference" even clearer.
When playing movie on Netflix website in Firefox click LCtrl+LAlt+LShift+d and check what is resolution after "Playing biterate"... Without "hack" extension - desktop Firefox and Chrome are limited to max. 1280x720 (except ChromeOS).

Extension to enable 1080p on Netflix movies/series (not all - some, even with "hack", will start in ~480p max, because no support for HDCP in Linux):

Quoting: KuJoIntegrated Netflix app! -> Nice!
Preinstalled Chromium Browser! -> Stadia support out of the box!

Could be an ideal box for the living room. :)
It is NOT Netflix application. It is browser in full screen with Netflix website displayed. Probably the same situation is with other "applications" like Disney+.

Mouse emulation on gamepad - not very ergonomic, but it will work quite well to start movie. But what about fast forward/backward? Using mouse emulation - it will be horrible without some kind of "intelligent" change gamepad button mapping...

Netflix in browser means that quality of picture will not be good - 720p max. Officially only Microsoft browsers are allowed to play in 1080p/4K quality. There is external addon to enable 1080p in Firefox, but from legal point of view it is "hack" so definitely it cannot be integrated in commercial product like Atari VCS.

Vulkan translation layer DXVK 1.5.3 is out fixing up a 'potentially' critical D3D9 regression
31 Jan 2020 at 12:25 pm UTC

The main problems with commenting such tools like wine, Proton or DXVK is... No proper knowledge in "average gamers" like we are... The problem is even more problematic - you cannot be "average developer" to understand it - you must be very good and experienced coder that understand internal win32 and Linux nuances...

Look at this comment:

https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-graphics-x-org-drivers/vulkan/1154923-wined3d-vulkan-back-end-is-back-in-the-works-following-wine-5-0?p=1155211#post1155211 [External Link]

Warning! I do not have proper knowledge, so my next sentence is 100% speculation.

DXVK is GREAT tool that is excellent as Vulkan wrapper for Windows and quick solution for lack of proper DX11 support in Proton. BUT - because of these C++ version nuances - it could be blocking point for some DRM - it could be reason for user bans, etc.

Looks interesting... Not so slow as turn based games, but also not so fast like hack & slash games.

So what is the genre? Real time-rewind turn based hack and slash game? :)

Monitor and stress-test your Linux gaming PC with GtkStressTesting
30 Jan 2020 at 11:52 am UTC

Probably it is my hardware issue, but GtkStressTesting is not showing my GPU temperature and fan speed. I cannot complain - I have nVidia GPU with their crappy proprietary driver:(

It looks like there is no option to logging measurements... It could be very helpful for "real" stress test like for example playing the game or doing some very long task like compiling something for many hours. If computer will hang - cannot determine why... It could be overheating but what? CPU? GPU? Without log - it is impossible to determine... I know that there are other applications for such scenario but they are often too complicated to configure (like for example https://www.monitorix.org/ [External Link]).

Mike Shapiro drops a cryptic message from G-Man for the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx

Quoting: WorMzyI was excited for Alyx, until it was confirmed that it is a VR exclusive. Hopefully poor sales will prompt them to revise that decision and release a more accessible version of the game.
Your statement is quite odd...

Porting Half-Life: Alyx to "standard" FPS shooter means - remove all special features like reloading guns, aiming, hiding, etc. It is THE CLUE of this game and it will be highly integrated with game puzzles... If you remove VR features - you will need also remove all puzzles that require it (so probably most part of the game!). There will be not much to be excited about what will remain - just another very narrow corridor FPS game like hundreds before...

Look at BONEWORKS gameplays. Without VR features - it would be very boring game (in very boring environment without much sense...).

Creator of WebRTC now working on Google Stadia, Darksiders Genesis out plus more Stadia news
7 Dec 2019 at 1:42 pm UTC

Sadly my concerns about Google Stadia and it's Linux influence confirmed: no good influence at all. Not only Stadia games has not been ported elsewhere to Linux, they even not working via Steam Proton...

* Destiny 2 - not working and even threaten that users that will try start game outside official supported platforms will be banned...
* RDR2 - not working
* Mortal Kombat 11 - not working

Even Vulkan do not received much... Only RDR2 officially has Vulkan support outside Stadia...

vkBasalt, the Vulkan post-processing layer has another new release with new effects
2 Dec 2019 at 5:12 pm UTC

Sorry for stupid question, but compiling and installing something directly from source code is not how I used to use Linux. Could someone explain where vkBasalt is installing their files and how it is working in the system?

Instruction is extremely not informative about it... `make install` and that's it? So it is somehow integrating with the whole system or maybe with GPU driver without notice?

How to remove it or at least disable autostart?
