Quoting: EhvisI've been on my longest ever pause streak. Is there an upper limit? And do you have to check in every month to opt out?
Surprising probably no one, most people use the Steam Deck as a handheld

I expected to use it more docked than I do (90% handheld, 10% docked). I told myself it could do the work of an HTPC as well as handheld gaming computer.
In practice, it's too cumbersome. Plugging it in, switching to desktop mode to get 4k resolution (somehow, adding media playuers as non-steam apps and setting them to native resolution doesn't quite work), firing up freetube or kodi, remembering freetube doesn't take controller input... And I'm pretty sure HBO Max on linux maxes out at 720p or something like that.
As for games, none of my current obsessions (Prey, Descenders) would look good with default resolution blown up on large tv.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPOn the one hand, I did find RetroArch tedious to figure out, on the other hand... that's a jenga tower of layers (ED > ES > RA > emulator) that seems to beg for something to go wrong, no?Quoting: brokkrIs EmuDeck similar to RetroArch in that it's more of an interface and configuration tool to emulators than emulation software itself? And is there overlap with RetroArch or do they cover completely different targets?EmuDeck is basically "just" a bunch of scripts with a bit of UI to set up EmulationStation (which internally uses RetroArch and other emulators when "launching" a game) for you. So it's not an either/or thing.
It does all the annoying setup of config files, etc. according to your wishes in a very easy to use manner.
VERY useful and saves hours of time.

EmuDeck is software that can help automate the entire process of setting emulators up...I recently finally wrapped my head around RetroArch to get C64 emulation on the Deck [External Link]. Is EmuDeck similar to RetroArch in that it's more of an interface and configuration tool to emulators than emulation software itself? And is there overlap with RetroArch or do they cover completely different targets?

Thanks for this. When at Fanatical I sometimes 'fear' ending up filling my cart with tons of 7/10s that are really more like 5.5/10s. But with a bit of research, I got some fun, little diversions for the Deck. Though be warned: Far Lone Sails lives up to it's name and really makes you squint to see anything on the Deck.
You can get Crusader Kings III and Just Cause 4 in the new Humble Choice

I never thought HBC would get me but this is too good of a deal to pass up. CK3 at 10 € alone is cheaper than I've ever seen before. Descenders is just dessert.

After playing far too much Hades (the epilogue is such a letdown after all that grinding!) I went back to the Racial Justice bundle from itch.io from two years back and picked out some of the ones, I had never gotten round to that seemed like a good fit for the Deck.
Night in the Woods was probably the standout. Great game, just demanding enough for some reason, that it hadn't worked well on my aging work laptop.
I really wish though, that itch.io had made more of an effort to embrace the Deck. Downloading, installing and integrating a Windows executable from itch on the Deck is still kind of a pain.

Quoting: dosInteresting. I would have assumed that sshd would terminate pretty quickly once shutdown commences, regardless of whether something else hangs. But it's worth testing for sure.Quoting: brokkrI recently encountered a nasty bug where my Deck was unable to shut down (the shutting down animation just kept playing) and all I could do was to leave it overnight to drain the battery. When that happens (usually as a result of my own hacking) I ssh into it and initiate a shutdown/reboot there, which makes it shut down cleanly.
Steam Deck Beta gets scaling for external displays, new "Preview" testing branch

Also does this have any bearing on the issue where I can't pick a greater-than-deck resolution in games even when using a large external display?

Added an option to scale the Steam Deck user interface for external displaysWhat's the difference?

Does anyone know if Valve are inviting users to report bugs? On Github or elsewhere?
(The presumed reason: trying to launch the installed itch.io launcher, added as a non-steam game, from the Game UI, being unable to abort or kill it when it didn't open, then unsuccesfully trying to fix it with a shutdown)
