BattlEye confirms Linux support for Steam Deck, will be opt-in like Easy Anti-Cheat

Quoting: JuliusI hope this will not end up in a story of one big game opting in, seeing some Linux based cheaters, then opting out again and claiming on Twitter that all it does is bringing in cheaters as the number of legit Linux players is so low (or some shortsighted BS like that).
Exactly my concern with AC software running entirely on user side like wine.

So we can have Dead By Daylight, Fortnite, PUGB and Rainbow Six Siege (only missing League of Legends as one of the nowadays relevant popular games).

Now the only thing that is left is Steam Deck to be relevant to mainstream users, because game companies will surely opt-in to surf in the deck hype, but they can can also give up as fast as such like the wave of native ports caused by steam machines before.

And in my opinion: If all of this, combined by windows 11 scheduled obsolescence, doesn't make some considerable difference in the adoption of Linux Desktop (more than 0,*) then I don't think anything will.

Valve answer questions about the Steam Deck in a new FAQ, anti-cheat for all Linux systems
23 Sep 2021 at 12:52 pm UTC

Will improvements to Proton for Steam Deck (like anti-cheat support) also apply to Proton on desktop?
Yes, these improvements will make it to all systems using Proton.
I'm glad to know this because I was certain that this one would involve hardware or kernel dependencies.

But I'm still worried about the effectiveness of a AC software running totally in user-side, the last thing we need is cheaters using Linux to exploit Anti Cheaters and Windows players demanding that they drop support for us because of this.

I think this one may also require us to install the native version of the AC (as root) and may only work with some kind of signature of Valve's proton (or our steam account), so I don't expect this to work with non-steam games.

But all of this are my thoughts, so we really need time to see how those things will go.

New patent from Valve appears for "instant play" of games and more

Quoting: GuestConsoles have had the "play before it finishes downloading" thing for many years. I'm surprised its taken this long for Steam to consider a similar feature
Probably because this one may not require the developers to opt-in this feature, like consoles does (similar of how they don't need to do anything for proton to work with their games)

Based on my understand about this technology:

-The good: people with slow internet partially being able to play without the game without the need to finish it first. Could also be used to make game "demos" out of the full client and be used in those "free weekends" without the end game content for example.

-The bad: This could generate bugs with games not well optimized to partial run (missing essential files for example) and all the extra bandwidth generated by those new telemetry. (windows 10 is a hell in this part)

-The ugly: Based on the telemetry analysis, they would know the best places to put ads inside the game [External Link].

Take down a resurrected Maggie Thatcher in this upcoming Doom II campaign

I wonder what are the personal political views of this game creator, because I like to know if it's a legit critic or pushing an agenda. That's how I personally do to avoid myself to be in a ideological bubble.

About the game, not much to comment besides another reskinned doom mod.

Steam Deck dev-kits are on the move Valve say, as some already have it

Quoting: ShmerlSo it really depends on the approach of those studios and how much quality and performance are a priority in their view.
If it already "works with acceptable performance" with proton, then don't expect studios to "waste" money modifying games just to support linux, unless somehow this guarantee a number of new sales to compensate for it. If we're talking about new releases, then "deck support" will have to prove itself first with the mainstream market, and it's cheaper for competitors like Epic and GoG to convince users to install Windows (like they already do) rather than spent money porting it.

Of course I'm not saying this is the best pro consumer attitude, but it's the unfortunately reality of the market.

Quoting: slaapliedjeThe thing is, not qll games are available on Steam. Like the latest Assassins Creed games. Some of Ubisoft's best sellers are still exclusive to their store.
Those non-steam contents are not concern to Valve, despite being able to install on steam deck somehow. And for competitors makes less sense to spent money porting their games just to benefit their main competitor system, since steam deck will be hardly attached to steam system as default.
