Devs are discovering the Steam Deck is good for making games too

Quoting: eldarionAs a software developer myself, you will have to do A LOT of code builds
Hey, that's what build farms are for :)

With huge amounts of RAM, CPU and storage for debug info and compiler cache!

You should avoid the stock Firefox install on Steam Deck as it's badly outdated (updated)

Quoting: HoolyTo be honest, they should include the Chromium Flatpak instead.
Why should they? It may be slightly faster, buxt diversity is good for the open web! It already looks like we're going back to IE days with Chromium's marketshare (thankfully, chromium mostly respects standards, for now).

Quoting: scaineI like that they support their older games with constant expansions (unlike Ubisoft [External Link])
That's appalling. Especially cutting off access to DLC. Instead, upon reaching EOL, I wish they made a combination of the following (easiest to do first):
* Altered the games to have them load DLCs offline
* Ripped uplay out of them
* Offered server binaries and custom server browsers
* Made everything p2p
* Released the Server-side source code
* Released client-side source code

At least they continue to sell them, they are not lost forever... until they stop working, that is.

SteamOS 3.3 Beta out, plus a Steam Deck Client update

Quoting: NerdNoiseRadioI love all of this! But there's one update I'm waiting on that I'll admit to being disappointed not to see here. Now, it's possible that we already have this and I've just missed it, or it's possible that I'm just misunderstanding the situation altogether, but my understanding is that while the Steam Deck hardware itself technically supports ray tracing, due to something with the MESA drivers, RT is not functionally available on SD using SteamOS. Apparently it works in Windows, but I have no interest in going that route.

So, any word on if/when we Linux faithful will see rays on the Deck? And if it's available already with some tweaking, can anyone point me to a resource that walks me through it? While I have absolutely loved my experiences with Linux so far in general, I'm still pretty "noob" and don't really trust myself to try tackling it myself (or necessarily even know where to begin). :-) All I know is that the last time I played Cyberpunk, it still would not let me turn the RT toggle on. :-(

Thanks so much, everyone!!! ❤️
A quick search turned this up: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2022/04/yes-the-steam-deck-will-eventually-get-ray-tracing-once-the-amd-gpu-driver-matures/ This is still more or less up to date, I believe. There's been some activity on AMD's GPUOPEN side recently, but we don't yet know what will emerge.

Edit: keep in mind RT is pretty new on the RADV driver, and was done without input from AMD. There are pending ~3x perf improvements, but it's currently ~10x slower than AMD's driver at tracing paths.

I have planned to do just that, with an extender and a cut to the backplate (I need to order a spare one). Shouldn't have many downsides, provided I take care of EMI shielding.

I don't see the connection, did I miss something?

Also, Vulkan (with a "k") is derived from AMD's "Mantle", so the name is quite appropriate IMO.

As for O3DE, I have yet to see an interesting project making use of it.

It only works with the AMDGPU driver, AFAIK, not the more popular RADV, which is part of Mesa.

UDF should be supported everywhere, it's a ISO standard :P

If you only use Linux, I'd format a sd card as F2FS. Otherwise exFAT or FAT32.

Back to the streaming, steam+wayland+pipewire has been broken for a while... :/

Looks like iFixit have Steam Deck parts available now (Update: it's gone)

I was thinking of 3D printing a backplate with a custom mount for a full-size M.2 nvme SSD (2280 or so), for use with an extender, and with a hole for said extender. However, if backplates are available, it could be easier, if not cheaper to buy one and mod it. Thanks valve!

Deck Builders Round Up

Quoting: EikeFrom the heading, I really thought this would be a round-up of people building a new version of their game for Steam Deck. :D
And I thought it was about a set of must-have games on steam deck :)

I've never been into deck builder games, personally :)
I've even been trying to avoid playing gwent in the witcher 3 :P
