Unlike other game engine reimplementations (OpenMW, openXcom, OpenRA, CorsixTH and so on), this isn't exactly "clean" in comparison which is why it's much more of a grey area.
Just a curiosity, what make it "dirty" in comparison? Is it because of the reverse engineering method?
Yes. Usually for clean reverse engineering, you need a chinese wall [External Link]: those who write the code must not see any original code, including decompiled sources. This is to make sure that the new code is 100% original.

Take OpenMW for instance: they just reverse-engineer the game file format, and create their own engine from scratch to load these.

Here, they use the original binaries, decompile them, and then change the decompiled output to something that compiles back, while cleaning it up (like giving actual names to the variables).

Talking point: what have you been playing recently?

Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE just picked this up to get back into some VR.
How is it? Reviews seemed to be rather mixed.

Quoting: grigiMy son is playing Factorio with me. It's the first computer game he actually enjoys :-)
Been playing that, and pretty much only that the last two months!
I feel you. I've mostly been playing Mindustry lately, alone and with friends. I have a lot on my backlog though, half-started, half-finished. I think I'm going to go back and try to finish Bayonetta and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice next. Nier: Automata too :P

Also some local co-op games when I have some friends over: Boomerang-Fu was a pleasant surprise from the Humble Choice. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Magicka 2. It's a shame Halo MCC doesn't have splitscreen, but I'll revisit the campaign now that there's a workaround for achievements [External Link].

Left 4 Dead 2 updated with Vulkan support thanks to DXVK

I wish they also made it easier to play local split-screen. L4D2 hasn't seen much love since the early Steam-on-Linux days.

To do so: right click the game and go to Properties, ensure you're on the General tab on the left, then enter "-vulkan" (without quotes) in the Launch Options box.
Shouldn't this be

-vulkan %command%

?
No, launch options are appended to the %command%, unless it's there. So you only need it in case you want to prefix the command with other options, like an environment variable. Here, either `%command% -vulkan` or `-vulkan` works.

HyperRogue turns the non-Euclidean roguelike into a VR experience and it's wild
5 Jun 2021 at 10:21 am UTC

Ooh, this reminds me of a math project I quite liked a few years ago!

IIRC, the hyperbolic space has a constant curvature. As a result, you can fit a lot more stuff in it without it colliding (well, depending on the curvature, I think it could be less). Mind-bending!

Parallel lines are defined as lines that do not intersect.

In Euclidian space, given one line, there can be only one parallel line that crosses a given point. Not here.

Will check it out on F-Droid. Great games there, between this, unciv and mindustry :)
Edit: the build seems to be 2 years old?

NVIDIA 465.31 driver out, plus NVIDIA takes another shot at limiting crypto

Quoting: KravenskyIf ETH is such a problem, probably a better way to fix it is to help Ethereum 2.0 (which is open source) to be released. It should implement Proof-of-Stake algorythm, which'll make ETH mining obsolete.
You wish. As you said, PoW is here to stay until the ponzi schemes start to collapse, at least. ETH will just fork with the miners on one side and the stakers on the other (most will probably do both). But if I had to choose, I'd prefer seeing cryptocurrencies use PoS.

UK-based Entroware launch the Poseidon desktop with 11th Generation Intel CPUs

Quoting: EntrowareThe chassis that we use for the Poseidon is the Fractal Design FD-CA-DEF-C-BK. With regards to the PSU, as this will vary between different Corsair, EVGA, and Cooler Master units depending on what we stock at that time, we do not provide specific models.
I was looking again at getting an AmigaOne x5000 with that snazzy Fractal Design case... https://www.amiga-shop.net/en/Amiga-Hardware/New-Amiga-Computers/AmigaONE-X5000-complete-system::790.html [External Link]

Fractal Design just makes VERY nice cases. It's what all my future builds will use, I think. I used to do Antec, but they've seemingly have gotten worse lately.
Ha, my last build was with a cooler master (Q300P), but it had... Cooling issues, and wasn't as small as I thought for a micro ATX build. Will definitely look at them for my next one, in a few years... Or at least read reviews more attentively.

Judge upholds $4M damages in the patent case against Valve for the Steam Controller
1 Jun 2021 at 5:29 pm UTC Likes: 2

Well, they could just license the patent, that's what those are for in theory. It certainly looks like straightforward pattent infringment. Note that you do not have to know of a patent to infringe.

On the other hand, one could wonder if the patent was legitimate in the first place. If you can find prior art, that invalidates it, for instance.

Here (France), there are a few conditions before submitting a pattent, if any is found to be unfullfilled, the patent is invalidated:

* It's a new thing (no prior art)
* It has industrial use (can be manufactured or used in the industry)
* It's actually an inventive and original thing. It must not be obvious to someone working in the field.

I'm a bit circumspect regarding the last one. Maybe that condition just isn't there in the U.S? It might be hard to prove in any case.

Patent US8641525B2 was filled in 2011, so it will expire in 2031. However, if anyone finds prior art, the patent can be invalidated. I'm not sure what constitutes prior art, as the pattent is quite narrow, but surely there were controllers that used the other fingers at some point in the past?

Edit: found that [External Link] brand, though it seems to match the date quite closely, so it might actually be the same guys.
