UK-based Entroware launch the Poseidon desktop with 11th Generation Intel CPUs

Looks good, but Intel only, and no GPUs. OEMs are about the only place where one can find a decently-priced GPU these days, so it's a bit sad to see that.

NVIDIA 465.31 driver out, plus NVIDIA takes another shot at limiting crypto

I'm just going to quote this HN comment [External Link], which I found quite interesting:

This won't really do anything for availability or reducing scalper pricing. Miners are a sizeable proportion of sales but far from the majority. Gamers will be able to buy more of these GPUs but less of the non-LHR or AMD GPU's. GPU prices won't actually change.

The real reason Nvidia is doing this is that when mining profitability inevitably drops, either because of a crypto price crash or Ethereum moving to Proof of Stake, the miners will flood the used market and ruin Nvidia's profits for a few quarters. Nvidia is trying to get miners to buy mining-only cards, because those can't be sold to gamers down the line. They'd rather mining cards become e-waste in a few years than get resold.

People think Nvidia is doing this to try to help them get better prices now, but really Nvidia is trying to extract more money from gamers in the long term.
As for doing that in the first place, I'm a bit torn on that one. This is obviously a stab at user freedom (as if you had any when you buy nvidia...). But I have little sympathy to miners. When in doubt, grab popcorn (like Epic vs Apple).

To celebrate one year, Half-Life: Alyx is the cheapest it's ever been

Quoting: jarhead_hCheapest it's ever been? Great. So just as soon as I can buy a 5900X & 6800XT to replace the 2600 & GTX1060 currently plugged into my X570, and then the Valve Index, I'll buy it. Oh, and that's AFTER I can afford to replace my Android phone with a Librem 5.

And all of than is after I have an income again. 2021 sucks.
This is actually incorrect, the cheapest it's ever been is 'Free!' as I got it for free with the purchase of my Index :) Basically if you bought an Index through Steam, they gave it to you :)

Also, if you're still running a 2600 from 1977 as your main gaming rig, kudos to you!
Nah, it's a Ryzen 2600. And the Asrock X570 mobo it was plugged into died. Luckily I had a B450 laying around waiting for the 2600 when the 5900X arrived. Now I don't have to build my old windows games box because it already is. Oh, wait the B450 is also an Asrock. Crap.
Wow, I've never seen a motherboard die. GPUs, Disks, RAM, PSU, yes, but never a motherboard or a CPU.

So did you get a librem one and a 6800XT? Component prices are soo inflated these days, I couldn't dream of affording a new GPU, and mine is dying.

How about they open up their designs? Even if those aren't complete, the community could try to pick up where they left, if there's any interest.

Katja's Abyss: Tactics turns Minesweeper into a turn-based tactics game

I like the idea of a fresh twist on minesweeper, but the execution looks a bit underwhelming to me, it might just be a bit too close to minesweeper for me.

Humble Bundle replacing purchase sliders with less generous options

Well, what is that bundle int the screenshot? I'd have been interested :D

It's been hit-or-miss these days, especially as my library grows and I find more and more duplicates.

Humble monthly also calms down my buying compulsions :)

Pixels customizable smart dice seem like an interesting way to spice up your tabletops

A review popped up on Arstechnica: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/03/20-sided-smart-dice-over-the-rainbow-ars-tests-39-led-filled-pixels-dice/ [External Link]

Edit: whoa, I had missed the part about open FW and SW. This makes the pixels roll from "Meh" to "Oooh" in my mind :)

Matrix + Mumble FTW

Just don't use a communication platform that's not open. There's so many to pick from, these criteria could be valuated a bit more, don't you think?

Quoting: LanzIs VR still a major pain to get running on Linux?
I picked up a second hand HTC vive for 300€. All I had to do was to switch away from wayland, pending this protocol: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/67 [External Link]

It generally works quite well, but I don't think reprojection is supported on my card? Loading times can be soo long in stuff like the lab, but I haven't tried a proper VR game yet. I bought Superhot VR a few weeks ago, will try it when I have time.

I will probably buy Alyx, I was waiting for a discount... I don't feel like paying 1/6 of the HMD cost for a game, as good as it might be... I guess I won't buy beat saber that soon.

Oh, that's neat, I like the integration with external tools, it could also be neat to flash the color according to the value, or if it's a critical throw, etc.

That said, $200... I know dice aren't typically cheap, with sets usually around $50. If I had a regular tabletop group, why not (esp. if everyone chimes in), but I wouldn't buy them on a whim.
