Albion Online now officially launched in Europe and MENA regions
By Pengling, 29 April 2024 at 5:41 pm UTC

Not my genre so I won't be diving in, but the excellent Josh Strife Hayes did an amusing and informative review of this one in his always-entertaining "Worst MMO Ever?" series. It sounds pretty decent if it's your sort of thing.

Valve makes paid 'Advanced Access' a clear feature on Steam now
By sudoer, 29 April 2024 at 4:59 pm UTC

Haven't read all the details but from the little I've read I think it's a good idea that fills the gap for the developers/publishers that don't want to develop from scratch in Early Access (out of secrecy for their project) but would rather do a beta test on Steam, which is not allowed on Steam if you don't go the EA route. Helldivers 2 comes to mind as the best example, it was multi-platform and it couldn't be tested properly with the vast amount of Steam users. Advanced Access would benefit both the dev (real test) and the consumer (don't buy 'til it's fixed) in this case.

Golf With Your Friends adds a hilarious new Speed Golf mode
By Termy, 29 April 2024 at 3:52 pm UTC

Huh, that could actually be really funny ^^
For the normal mode, me and my friends really prefer to play via remote play together, as the "normal real multiplayer" ruins a lot of funny moments because everybody plays at once. But this could finally make it worthwhile that we all bought a copy

Something like Alien:Isolation in VR?!
It sounds intriguing, but i'm definitely too old for that kind of shenanigans

Can you get mothervr working on linux?

I tried long ago but got nowhere. The mod hasn't been supported for an aeon now, was quietly hoping teambeef would be getting around to it.

Open source evolution sim Thrive gets upgraded to Godot 4
By Pyretic, 29 April 2024 at 3:04 pm UTC

Glad to hear about more developers' journeys with switching to Godot 4. AFAIK, the project migratory is a bit lacking in most parts since it mostly stopped development after 4.1 released. By that point, developers had either switched to Godot 4 already or stayed with 3.

I'm so glad that someone is trying anee gamepad like operating system for handhelds. It's nice to have alternatives to SteamOS, plus ChimeraOS and HoloISO (which aren't as bleeding edge as this)

Zink driver startup time squashed with new patches

Reminds me of one 2003 XP laptop I had which couldn't do OpenGL on Win7 yet DirectX games ran fine with it, but that was a driver issue

It's not so much that they _can't_ do opengl, and more like they didn't bother writing a driver for it. The premise of a layer like Zink is exactly that it lets vendors stop caring about opengl and focus on vulkan.

For the record, the samsung xclipse gpus don't have an opengl es driver and use ANGLE.

Not really much to go on. The trailer meaningless and it's coming to quest, which means that it'll be severely limited. Maybe it can get me hyped later, but today is not the day.

That is a very disappointing announcement. The game is less than 8 months away!

I'm hesitant of my ability to survive the terror in VR, but if it's the only way to play it, I'll probably at least try. My last two gaming Alien experiences have been superb (Isolation and Dark Descent).

It would be nice if games would portray gunplay more realistically. Light weapons always at the ready, but heavier weapons, like assault rifles, have to be brought to the ready first. In fights, the purchase price is usually not the deciding factor as to whether a pistol, submachine gun or long weapon is used. Blocking the field of view can be one aspect of it.

Microsoft open sources MS-DOS 4.0
By hardpenguin, 29 April 2024 at 7:26 am UTC

Quoting: lucinosWe already have FreeDOS so MS-DOS is only for history. It would be more interesting to release Windows 3.1 as open source. This might actually happen. Also very interesting would be the release of windows 95. This unfortunately is very unlikely as I remember they have many legal complications. The last windows version I would care is windows 2000. After 2000 I would just prefer windows to simply vanish from existence.
Agreed, they should open source at least the over 20-yo Windows XP. Too little too late, we now have extremely matured DOSBox and Wine that cover nearly all of our needs.

Proton Hotfix update fixes Fallout 4 frame pacing issue on Steam Deck OLED
By Mountain Man, 29 April 2024 at 2:05 am UTC

For what it's worth, Fallout 4 looks and runs amazingly well on my LCD Steam Deck. While I can get a solid 60 frames per second, it only gives me little more than an estimated one hour of run time on a full battery. If I dial it back to 30 frames per second, it gives me an estimated two hours, and by tweaking the power settings, I can stretch it out to nearly three hours. Not too shabby.

Personally, I hate the gun models in first person shooter games. I want to see the full background view of the landscape with just a cross-hair for aiming, and no gun model obscuring up to 25% of the screen.

(I wish the games had the option to turn OFF the gun models in their settings.)
