Title: Using KDE Plasma Wayland session

Tried switching to the Wayland session in Plasma 5.23.3 but it started hanging after monitor went to sleep. Back to X11 for now, but I guess it's worth digging into. Did anyone experience the same thing?

What is your Mesa version (and amdgpu/kernel)? One of the downsides is that KWin is stuck with OpenGL / EGL. They should switch to Vulkan eventually.

Yep! Just last week tried it. Same thing happens if you turn the monitor off.

Just got a black screen when I turned the monitor back on. I presumed a hang, as by the time it occurred to me to type out terminal commands to force a reboot, I'd already hit enough buttons on the keyboard I couldn't be sure what state the terminal was in to log in and issue commands blind.

Went back to X11. I'm pretty sure I've the same Plasma version over here in openSuse land. Honestly thought it was an OpenSuse/Nvidia thing as the implementation is a little rougher than in Debian.

We should probably file a bug for it, if there isn't one already. I just want to see what's in dmesg when that happens.

That's a good idea! I'll see if I can try tonight and grab some log output.

Don't have that issue though I'm on plasma 5.22.5 TBF wayland has been alot better thatn I thought it would be.

Only issue I have with wayland is the copy past bug thing ! :dizzy:

It's what makes me default to X11 when not gaming .

I occasionally try Wayland with KDE. But mostly the experience is not good.
No real effects, graphical artifacts, flickering, sometimes crashes and black screens.

I think that the KDE team still has of lot of work to do, until everything is as stable and beautiful as it is on X.

Been using Plasma on Wayland since 5.18, it is improving... and Vulp using it as daily driver since 5.22.

For note, Vulp use a system with AMDGPU.

So I got a day off and tried it again today.... I didn't get it to crash when I turned off the monitor.... It ran fine, even played Factorio on it for a little bit.

My system did do a kernel and Nvidia driver update this week... one been holding back on those, so maybe it was that? I don't recall seeing anything Wayland or plasma related, but there several hundred updates.

Trying the Wayland session again now with Plasma 5.23.5. Things look better. That sleep / wake up display bug is gone. So I'll try to stick with it for now and see how it goes.

See if Dying Light works for you in wayland please ? (If you have it)

I gave wayland another go last week but Dying light and a few others wouldn't play ball unless in X11

Actually that display sleep bug is still there (just happens less frequently), so I'm going back to X11 again for now :(

I don't have Dying Light unfortunately. But I tested Cyberpunk 2077 and a few other games and they worked fine.

Ion Fury and Umineko were OK.

Changed your mind again then !

Well, it still does happen. The easiest way to check it is to turn the monitor off. It messes up the session. So I'm waiting for 5.24 before switching proper.

I'm OK with inconveniences, but not with a bug that hangs the whole desktop :)

That's interesting. The issue you are describing, is happening to me but with X11.

I recently purchased two new monitors (dual setup, matching pair) and when they are told to go to sleep by KDE they will do one of three things, which one happens is random:

1) Suspend, then immediately back on - displaying whatever was on the screen (fail to sleep)
2) Suspend, but then cannot wake.. need to login via ssh to get a response from the computer and reboot, executing dpms commands to wake them doesn't work.
3) Leaves backlight on, showing only a black screen. Can't further wake monitors, requires SSH to reboot system as above.

I've worked around it for now though by modifying the monitors power settings to allow switching on/off without notifying the computer (so xorg still thinks the monitor is connected and powered) and disabling sleep timeout in KDE. So I just switch them off manually before walking away from the computer.

(I tried with both power settings, same issue occurs for both)

I've been using Plasma Wayland for several weeks now, and aside from a few quirks its been smooth sailing. Just my experience.

Unfortunately that monitor sleep hang bug is still present in 5.24. So X11 so far still.

Debian testing finally shipped newer Qt fixing that very annoying bug mentioned above that was breaking KDE Wayland session. Switched to it now and it works smoothly so far :)

Debian sure is slow updating Qt.

how has gaming performance been for you? i've noticed a stark difference between x11 and wayland when fps is low. x11 is very smooth but in wayland it feels like lag. i guess latency increase. a lot more sluggish.
I have used Plasma Wayland on Kubuntu for several months now. I did not notice any difference while gaming. I am using an AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT with the latest stable MESA release. My display is running 1080p@144Hz.

The main difference for me is the support for VRR/Freesync. On X11 VRR has only been available for games that can run in exclusive fullscreen mode. On Wayland i can use Freesync for all my games.
