Valve adding a Steam feature for game transfers between PCs and Steam Decks

Hm, I do have a laptop I leave idle'd as my makeshift self-hosted cloud/backup storage. I could get a game installed there, and then distro-hop, and quickly get everything back running. Peer-to-peer tech is cool, I wish we have a simple self-hosted peer-to-peer cloud suite (Syncthing and Resilio is decent for storage, but they don't come with a full suite of stuff that would be useful on phone and PCs).

Quoting: JahimselfAre the performance good? I mean do you need powerfull hardware to run games?I can run a JRPG (which, on the one hand, isn't too taxing, but OTOH Japanese devs aren't known to be most efficient) like Ar nosurge just fine on a 3400G. Not at the best quality but it does run well. It's never going to be as light as PCSX2 games, but efficiency-wise, I think it's gotten there.
Latest Steam Survey sees a minor dip for Linux & Steam Deck, still trending nicely overall

Some people speculated that it's because a lot of Windows gamers tuning back for Winter Sale and holiday gaming, rather than a real drop in Linux usage. If that's true, we should see a correction from that in the next two months. Either way, I hope the upward trend continues this year.
Valve dev teases HDR support for Linux Gaming

Can't say I expected that, but I should. System76 and Red Hat has been the main people in focus for HDR as of late, but Valve has been the most substantial with driving gaming on Linux (naturally) and a lot of stuff has been progressing much faster after Valve starts contributing.
Not to praise on them too much, but Linus' quote on Valve saving desktop Linux seems to remain pretty on-point. I hope that he remains right on that (though I also hope his quote on Nvidia will no longer apply next year).

What I want to see in 2023 for Linux, Gaming, Steam Deck and more

> GOG Galaxy and Epic Games Store on Linux
I honestly don't care about this anymore. It's been too long and Heroic has gotten most of the functions I care about. Plus, I doubt that their interface will be as smooth and clean as Heroic on Linux. I guess I wouldn't mind more API access so that things like Save Sync, Play Time tracking, and Achievements will always work. Those are my main reasons for buying stuff, outside of general convenience.
As for what I want to see 2023? A desktop experience that has the same level of OOTB hardware compatibility as Windows. I don't want to cobble together biometrics support support manually, I want HDR and Fractional Scaling to work universally (even Windows has issues with this, on legacy apps, so it'd be cool when Linux surpasses them), I want Wayland to not be something I need to try and wary if anything I use has some issues with it -- I want x11 to truly be legacy already for everything I use.

Wine on Wayland sounds like it's coming along nicely

I guess I tried making Wayland work for me once, it was too much of a pain in the ass. I'll wait until it reaches "just works", all the tools matures, and I don't notice any differences. So it's cool whenever new Wayland things lands, but just that, cool.

I think it's fair if you still prefer Bottles, but Heroic is just more to the point for me.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualBottles is really nice...I hope they fix the issue with Japanese character encoding, [External Link] however, because all of the games I play outside of Steam are Japanese visual novels. As a fellow VN player, Heroic works better for me. It's easy to add games (and have the cover appear), it can use both normal Wine and Proton, and dictating what winepfx to use is easy (so you can use the old guide's prefix [External Link] which is still the best option for VNs in my experience), plus they have a playtime tracker for me to use when reporting to VNDB and HowLongToBeat as well as auto Add Game to Steam.

Lutris v0.5.12 out now fixing Origin, Epic Store, Ubisoft Connect, GOG

While I still like Lutris for managing emulator games, I gotta say, this latest update feels underwhelming with regard to Lutris for managing Wine games, compared to Heroic, Bottles, or even Steam (esp. with option to use sgd-boop and steamtinkerlaunch).
Even for certain online games, people has opted to make its own launcher (Minecraft, FFXIV, GI) or there are scripts that works independently of Lutris, so even as a community repository for game installation it's starting to lag behind.
Lutris is great for its time but I think the design decisions made back then has started to take its toll. It's still a nice tool but I can't say that I want to use it these days unless I need to. I'd rather just use Heroic or Steam with Steam ROM Manager.

I do root for Australia though -- who knows, maybe in the process Indonesia gets a release as well.

Holy shit, I just tested it, it's so much simpler and quicker adding games via Heroic than through Lutris or Bottles. Has a Total Play Time tracker too so that's the usecase that long kept me to Lutris covered. The UX overall is really nice for games, especially with how simple it is to Add Game (plus how they automatically pulling the cover -- even found the one that's not on Steam).
This is really cool.
