Maui Shell seems like a very interesting KDE graphical environment

A lot of people do like the polish GNOME has, just that the particulars become disputed and then it becomes worse because, I don't know, GNOME team just seems to have that effect.
As far as this new shell is concerned.... ehhh. I think it looks cool, but I'm not convinced as my experience with Maui apps has been that "it looks nice, it could probably work well on alternate form factor, but compared to existing solutions, they just get in the way instead."
Most prominently with index-fm - I tried that one, in hope of a file manager with session saving, and in the end I just went back to Dolphin. I'd rather use Nemo or Dolphin over index-fm, though it's a toss up between Nautilus and index.
I'll definitely test it in a VM once the beta starts... I think on February? As long as they have an .iso to make testing easy.

Quoting: MacabreHeartLooks good. Quite like Gnome tbh but i dont see that as a bad thing, although it does make me curious if we'll see the same vitriolic complaints applied to it.I think most of the vitriolic complaints for GNOME comes down to modification (theming, extensions, tweaks, etc.) and overreaches (libadwaita, effects on other distro and apps), amplified by being essentially the 'default' DE of many major distro, plus overall just whatever is going on with their devteam because I feel like they've been feuding with pretty much everyone for ages, from distro maintainers, to users, to even the kernel team as well.

Quoting: anewsonI've never tried KDE, now seems like the timeI'd recommend FerenOS to test them. If Ubuntu Budgie is like GNOME for sane people, then FerenOS is the Budgie equivalent for Plasma.

Oh thank god Budgie is now independent. I don't really care about Solus - it's neat, but they pale in comparison to the importance of Budgie to me. It's kind of the reverse of Elementary OS to me, where I like a lot of it that isn't the DE, and in here I don't really care about Solus but really like the DE.
I hope that the path forward is clearer soon - the EDL switch is hanging very closely, and I hope it doesn't become a real issue in the future.
And issues like this is why I hope that FerenOS will finally formally create its team this year and why Ubuntu, Fedora, and Manjaro are just more reliable and trustable.

SteamOS for the Steam Deck gets slimmed down to 10GB

Honestly, I think SteamOS could be more efficient, but it could possibly be some redundancy because end-user expect things to "just works."

Quoting: minkiuEdit: Looking at Endless OS download ISOs https://endlessos.com/download/ [External Link] They are between 14GB ~ 20GB, I know they are GNOME based, but still a good reference I'd say, although they seem to bundle a lot of software/tools.There is a 1.7GB ISO. The 17GB one is meant for use in education sector with limited bandwidth, so it has a lot of e-book/wikihow, a bunch of apps pre-installed, and include they coding games they're pushing.

Quoting: TermyDoes anyone know what the hell they are including to make it that big? Even with several proton-versions preinstalled it shouldn't get up to 10GB, let alone 24.Well, they'll probably need to allocate for system update, and possibly some sort of "factory reset" in case someone broke their install. There's also their custom UI that they'll probably use.
Or are they maybe going in the silverblue-direction and include a bunch of redundant libraries?
Quoting: LinasWas wondering the same. I have a system next to me right now that is running a pretty standard, albeit minimal GNOME desktop, and it is using 5G of disk space.Well, if you account for Wine, that'll add probably add 1GB. Account for factory reset and pre-allocated space for system image update as well... I think that's pretty reasonable?

I really love this. I'm currently looking at Endless OS and Fedora Kinoite to see if it could work for my usecase.
I would love to also have a Toolbox container though. If the UX on PC is decent, I might just use it, then use Toolbox to have CrossOver inside one Toolbox, then install most of what I need via Flatpak (and maybe some other AUR-under-Toolbox container if they're not there).

Personally, I just find other game stores to be a hassle. And most of their feature parity with Steam is lacking, even if you're a Windows gamer.
The whole Steam package is what's keeping me on Steam. Steam Cloud, Steam Workshop, Steam Guide, Steam Community (I don't use it much, but posting cool/funny screenshots do give that dopamine hit), Steam Friends, Steam Chat, easy invite, Steam Play Together (I've used it play a fighting game with a friend - latency isn't great but it's just for fun so whatevs), Steam Overlay (with easy browser access)...

Quoting: rustybroomhandleAnd I guess while we're at it, Lutris is not on there either. (been on flathub-beta for ages)Can someone tell me how Steam and Lutris has been, on Flathub? I've only gotten around to installing it this week but haven't had the chance to test either yet.

Damn, that's nice. I've played the game on an Arch-based KDE system, but currently I have issues with the cutscenes being weirdly unstable in framerate, but that seems to be fixed here.

I'm not sure how many people uses it, but I feel like Garuda Linux has earned enough staying power that I feel like it deserves to be on the list.
Like, it feels weird to have Open Mandriva, Mageia, and openSUSE which aren't particularly focused on gaming or use for desktop by masses but distro like Garuda Linux and Feren OS aren't represented.
I've just filled in Manjaro KDE as a result, even though I've been using Garuda for the last half year.
