This looks like something I definitely want to try. Hopefully the world and its lore is as deep as they suggest.

The Children's Commissioner in England has called on the government to class loot boxes as gambling

Quoting: Mal
Quoting: namikoIt's an issue of responsibility: How much should the average citizen be responsible for their own foolish mistakes?

Your average citizen has little issues with loot boxes. Apart from playing a game that is made purposely inconvenient and more frustrating to make loot boxes more appealing and the constant psychological pressure that derives from that. But when it comes to fork additional money, the average user will just pass.

Your minority of gambling vulnerable/addicted individuals instead (be it for education issues, brain damage, genetic trait), the so called whales, they'll do have issues given that they simply can't control their spending when stimulated in specific ways.

It's worth noting that the majority of people are not immune to psychological pressure and manipulation, even if they think they are. It's possible that some people who don't respond to social cues and the like are not vulnerable, but the rest of us are. You can tell yourself that you're immune to marketing all you like, but you're not. Neither am I. If it was only the very vulnerable (prone to addition, children, etc.) who are affected by this stuff, predatory practices in games like Fortnite or Candy Crush wouldn't be as widespread a problem as they are.

There's a word for people who think they can't be cheated: marks.

Humble Store is doing a Female Protagonist Sale, plus the upcoming Steam sale dates leaked

At this point I don't know why Steam even bothers hiding their sale dates, given none of them are really a big surprise. Hallowe'en sale will take place....over Hallowe'en. Winter sale over Xmas/New Year's. Autum sale between the two. Pretty much the same as always.

What would be interesting is to require, with every real-money purchase on microtransactions, a cumulative tally be displayed showing how much was spent on the game that day/week/total amount. I would imagine simply seeing how quickly runaway spending can occur on those sorts of games would give a lot of players pause.

Oh no. What have you done.

You've made wine farts, that's what you've done!

I've had my eye on this one for about a year or so now, and the devs are very active. From the updates they've posted, it looks like there's been a lot of progress already.

I seems, they can't clear copyright problems.

They didn't say in their announcement, but I can't imagine that it's technically legal, at least I can't remotely begin to imagine the manpower and time needed to track down and contact hundreds of copyright holders to get the necessary permission. And even if it's abadonware, you still cannot make it available in such way without permission. Copyright law is really clear about that you cannot do ANYHING with a protected work, unless with explicit permission or when the law explicitly allows it.

OTOH, I can't see anybody suing them over it, either. These games have no commercial value anymore.

There are a couple of Elder Scrolls games in there (I saw Daggerfall and Redguard at least), and I dunno if Bethesda are the sort to just look the other way even if they're not still selling the games.

Quoting: cprnYup, there are minor sound issues... but I played the good old Prince of Persia for a bit and I loved it! :D Cheats don't work, though... :(

Minor sound issues, actively painful to listen to...it's a fine line.

Hm. Tried a couple of games, and results were....bad.

Princess Maker 2 gave me badly stuttering sound with SoundBlaster mode, and no sound at all with the other two modes.

Wizardry VII had great sound, but I had zero control over the cursor with keyboard or mouse, so couldn't get past the first menu.

Robotron 2084 is apparently just a demo version (it gives an address in Canada for the full version) and has the same stuttering sound as Princess Maker 2. Also, I figured out how to shoot but not move. Arrows and WASD both non-fuctional so I died fast anyway.

The Hidden Below gave me the usual menu to choose SoundBlaster or other sound options, then led me through a series of menus in German which I think was for more sound-related stuff. It's hard to tell. In any case, this time the sound had an echo. More of a crackle than a stutter as well. Still pretty awful. Game actually worked at least, if a bit slow.

Might and Magic 4 - Clouds of Xeen - Sound is great! Animations run smoothly! An absolute joy for the eyes and ears after all those others. Same problem as Wizardry though, as I can't interact with the menus at all. Pity.

So yeah, not exactly a good experience thus far.

So they finally provided an option between "no monsters" and "ALL the monsters"? That's something that's been keeping me from returning to it after playing a bunch of it a few years ago.
